As an employee, What motivates you?

I have been working in this non government organization for 4 years now. During my first 2 years i was assigned to do field works. Go to the branches for system implementation and maintenance. Facing the branch staff are challenging. You will meet people that are sometimes hard to understand, hard to talk, hard to persuade for cooperation when they know whay you are doing is for their convenience when the system is fully implemented yet youget the least cooperation needed to have your work done. What motivates me is my determination to finish the task in a given time. How about you? what motivates you?

hello bluerain! To be totally honest, the first and foremost motivator in my job as an employee, is the salary. As the sole breadwinner in the family and a solo parent to three kids, that is quite understandable. However, in the long run, what really motivates me to stay on the job is the satisfaction of doing something with my utmost capability and being satisfied with its end-results. Realizing also that the job i am working on would benefit not only a handful of people but would also redound to the benefit of the whole constituents of my town, ignites my energy to accomplish my tasks. No matter how insignificant my job may seem to others, just knowing that you are contributing to a much bigger cause than simply accomplishing an office task, is worth every effort in the job.

You can call me derielle, it's fine with me..by the way, i have a lot of friends who works with NGOs and i'd say that it is a very difficult job. I mean, most NGOs are foreign-assisted or sponsored and they sport a very high standard work performance.. That's why most people who works for these type of employers are well-harnessed and equipped with work knowledge that maybe lacking in some employees who works for government agencies and other privately-owned companies.

Yes derielle it is because all employees are trained from time to time. Most GO's has their training department that conducts periodic training classes, refreshers and any other forms of employees developments.Plus the experiences they have.

I think that your work during your first two years wouldn't be that hard if you enjoyed it. That's the challenge of the job right? For me, what motivates me first is my family. We cannot really survive our everyday life without me and my husband's income especially that we are renting a house, we have a helper and my baby is only three months old. I always think that I am working for my baby and my husband.

Hi ara, as to the enjoyment i did enjoy most part of it. In fact i enjoyed those two years much than the rest. But think again you are dealing with people who are not cooperating.

Yeah, it's just annoying to deal wioth people who do not cooperate. At least you have learned something like dealing with those kind of people, a skill that you could use any time in the future, right? :)

well of course money is one but i really like my co-workers and the vision that my organization puts forth so that is why i like to work.

Yes of course cher, money is always the bottom line. And that's we are here to earn. :D. Same with the rapport with your colleagues. That is also important. And I'm glad there's still some person out there who values their organizations vision.

compensation and people you work with. life as an employee would be nice if both are ok. it's hard when you're paid less but you're working as hard as the others. it's also not okay if people around you contributes stress on you. i'd better work alone..

Hello marker, I agree with you it is a healthy work environment if everyone in the workplace are in good harmony. And as to the compansation, well there are cases that those whi have less work may have higher or the same as the salary you are recieving. It depends on the ranks and levels. Same here there are times i'd better work alone.

I am being motivated with the fact that if I don't do my job well, I might lose it and become one of those unemployed. There is no easy job, but we have to work, so that we have money to buy food and pay the bills.
• Philippines

Hi jaesine, I strongly agree with you. Everyday living depends on the amount of money we have. I can't imaging living without money. The food we eat, things we will use, the bills? How can we go living on without money? Even if oyu live in the mountains you still need money to buy food. Nice one jaesine.

Hi colorful, congratulations for a job well done. Graduating is such an achievement to be proud of. Im wishing you luck in your job hunting.

Congratulations! Well, based on my experience, interest counts a lot. I am a programmer but my first job was technical support representative in a call center. At first, I was enjoying the work but then, it didn't last long. I got bored and I resigned. I lasted for only 3 months. So I suggest that you apply for a job that you really enjoy doing and not just for the pleasure of having a job. That would be bad for your record if you will only last months from company to company. Goodluck!

Well I know what would motivate me to not get fired you know I would work really hard because I do not want to lose a job that I got hired at when the economy is bad right now and we all have to hold our own you know.

Hi anime, i understand that since job hunting is not an easy thing to do. You have to be highly armed for any position you are holding on. Hard work and dedications to ones job is one big factor why employees got promoted and retained but of course you have to be highly reliable on the task given and ready for some changes. Go for it but have time to relax. After my two years in field work, i asked for a 2 days vacation. :)

Hi cherwin, there are lots of company who compensates their employees higher. I was referred with a colleague before to his new workplace. The offer is really good but given the fact that being one of them will make my knowledge stops growing and i wont be spending more time with my family, I decided not to continue with the application. And to the performance, well field staff are given incentives for good performance. They are the company's bread and butter. Without them the rest of us will not be here :D

hello bluerain, your current work have similarities with my work before, 3 years ago. i can still remember how it was tiring but enjoy. i was at the NGO (micro financing), though havent experienced the field but i can feel how it was terrible when dealing at people well who kept on complaining the poor service when they are at fault. from its difficulties, challenging nature that i had to do some other things apart from my major responsibility and learned multitasking skill, just to help resolve issues inside the office that had brought by the field. even though how hard it was, but the thing that keep me motivated that time was the teamwork of all employees regardless of the rank, the family treatment of each other, and the lil things i've done was greatest for them...though the compensation wasn't enough for me but i was very happy and contented bcoz of the friendly environment---not on the thing they praised my lil contribution but the thing itself that they were happy. its really a nice feeling when you've done something where people are glad at it...the word "thank you" and the smile on there faces is enough for me to work for more and keep on helping...but sad to say that i had to left my work and moved away for some family matters...until now, that is the thing on me what keeps me motivated to work with my current job.

hi ron, yes indeed that was a terrible moment in my working life. I can relate well to the experience in dealing with these people but im glad after 2 long years we successfully implement it and they are quite happy now with of course few complains but addressable. And as to the peers relationship well thats good that we maintain good relationship with them or we might end up stressed with the office environment not because of the task but because of the tension created. Happy mylotting!

I have been in this place and job for the past 5 months and the greatest motivator has been my boss. He lends me his complete support. I had a tough time getting new business for the company. he never forced me, but understood my problems and gave me the liberty to deal with the clients in my way and now i have got 2 orders for the company worth half a million and another one worth 2 million. he has kept his trust on me and is happy with the way i am going.

Hi edward, you have a good boss and it should be that way. Bosses does not just give orders to employees :D or not just assigned task. When the going gets tough they are your comforter. When the task went wrong, they are there to give you full support. When you are losing hope they will motivate you. And most of all bosses are mentor too. That's what my bosses are.

I was working in company with multitasking responsibilities. I was not enough compensated with the duties and responsibilities I was performing. What motivates me to stay in the company and to finish the everyday task is the harmonious relationship between me and all of my officemates. We don't have the so-called office gossip.

What motivates me as an employee? Let's be honest, money/salary is a very good motivation. You don't want to keep working hard and be underpaid right? But sometimes, salary is overlooked as jobs are scarce. So, if money is not an issue, having a good manager/leader, one who supports, leads well and shows that he cares for his people is a good motivating factor. Recognition for doing a job well done is a very good motivating factor too.

Hi juryse, given the fact that jobs are scarce yes that's true its the leader and the office environment. I dont know how you guys handle with recognition but i'd rather do not have it announced or i dont want it coming from my boss. :) It makes me feel uneasy.

hello bluerain, i moved to a job with a considerably smaller pay but a better shift schedule. now, what motivates me most is the kind of team i have--the people in my current job are super! they make me laugh, we consider everybody a family here. we are but a small team, but our line of business enables us to meet a huge variety of people and this, too, serves as a motivation to me: you never know what blooper you will encounter for the day. the pay is not enough for my expenses and i needed to get a part-time job, but i am totally happy and i am not thinking of leaving this job because i need this to keep me grounded always. it's good that you are motivated by your determination. keep cool, you don't want to burn out immediately. ;) happy mylotting!

The salary that I am getting twice a week is my motivation to work. Even though I am not that happy with my company right now but still I am striving to earn money because I need this to travel to different places and eat delicious food. Also with the money that I am earning it's a great help not only to myself but also to my family.
