One of the best way to train a dog is to use repetitive gestures, making them do a trick while telling them what that trick is (such as pressing down on their rear and making them sit while actually telling them "sit" if that wasn't clear), and speaking with a clear voice. And definitely reward them with a treat when they do something right!
Most importantly, try not to teach them more than one trick at a time. Settle for teaching them one trick and making sure they really know it before moving on to a different one.

Training a puppy is usually not too hard when you are patient and persistent and use the right training methods. Before teaching your puppy tricks, you need to teach him the basic sit/stay/down commands and to come when you call his name. Teaching your puppy good manners around other humans and pets will make him a better companion as he grows older.
Always use positive reinforcement when training a puppy, that is, reward him immediately when he responds to a command correctly, and don't punish him or scold him when he doesn't cooperate. Some dogs have short attention spans and get bored quickly with training, so make the sessions short, five or ten minutes, but have two or three sessions a day. .
Once he has learned to respond to basic commands then you can teach him cute tricks like balancing a treat on his nose or jumping through a hoop, whatever you have in mind. Make the lessons fun so he is more likely to cooperate!

Here is a link to an article about teaching your puppy good manners; perhaps it will help you train your puppy!

I think the best way to train dogs is by positive methods. Food reward seems to be the dog's favourite. :)
When you teach your dog a command, reward him every time he does the wanted behaviour. Timing is importand, you should give him the treat almost immediately (within seconds), or he may not associate the reward with the proper action.
For the simple obedience commands, try to use short words instead of long sentences or phrases. You can also associate verbal commands with hand signals.
If you haven't trained a puppy before, it may be a good idea to join some puppy classes, just to see the way a puppy is trained. If there aren't puppy clases in your area (like there are no training classes in my town), you could search for short movies on youtube to see how it's done.
