Why is Reality TV appealing?

I personally don't get it. To me it seems to appeal to the common denominator in the average human being with an average IQ (80-120).
There is no room for creativity or insight or thought. Nothing to expand one's look at life or the future. I like shows that make me thing about myself and the human race. Maybe ponder on our flaws as human beings or be proud of them. About where we are going as a whole. I like the philosophical questions Sci-Fi and Fantasy brings.
What about you?

It is AGONY. I mean talking about the TARDIS and temporal paradox or about how the Ori are a decent commentary on religion and debating which, are fun.
Reality TV???
WHAT could you possibly talk about other than hair, clothing and attitude?

I've never understood the appeal of reality TV, I don't really watch the show unless it's a show that's actually designed to help people and it's not just about winning money.

I don't get it either... but I don't really watch much TV so you could say that I don't get TV period. My favorite genre is high fantasy. (Yeah... I'm out of luck in the TV department.) It seems to me that the majority of shows on network television are crime dramas. Or... drama dramas. Which I hate even more.
I'd rather read books. Books are awesome.

I like all of the shows they play on TV. I don;t have a specific taste.
