My son started kindergarten this year in an American Public School. His teacher was young year or so fresh outta college. She was an excellent teacher, however...her dress was questionable.. I understand fashion, I do, really...but 4 inch heels teaching a class of kindergarteners, I mean have you seen how low the tables are? lol.. but thats ok, not gonna judge on that, that is her comfort at stake not mine.. But she wore tight tight jeans and tight shirts when she bent over her thong would show~! Granted, the childrens' fathers probably wouldnt complain, however, I find it a bit inappropriate for children, of any age in school really. What do you think about the way a teacher dresses? Should it make a difference? Or should they be able to dress anyway they want?

I find myself responding to your discussions alot today.lol I think teachers need a dress code just like the students. Being a teacher is a job like every other one and they need guidelines. Home is home and work is work so separate the two, comfort zone or not.

I have to agree with Suke. I do wear skirts with slits and short tops with jeans....but never to the kindergarten to teach at. I know I am setting an example at the work place....and I do not want to influence them in the wrong way. Of course, I do not dress like a teenager outside the school....but some of my casual outfits might not be appropriate for school but will be fine if I bump into my students at a mall (which I often do).

However teachers dress outside of school is 100% their business, but showing a thong in class, its like a rap video in school lol...

Having been a kindergarten teacher at an international school in India, I would definitely say that the teacher should dress appropriately. We were told so right at the beginning of the academic year and we still had teachers who would wear hipster jeans and short tops and revealing clothes. But of course, these teachers were warned by the Centre Head...especially when there was a Parent-Teacher meeting or a Sing along session. The sing along session was the part where she was more particular because...though it was a sing along with Mamas day....nowadays more and more fathers are also participating actively in the school activities (I'm sure it could also be because of the way certain teachers dress).....and the Centre Head doesn't want tongues wagging. And these teachers are mothers with children at the same school. When it has been clearly spelled out for us, I wonder why they do not understand how to dress. Coming back to your son's kindergarten, even if there are no parents watching, it isn't appropriate for the children to be exposed to these kind of clothes esp. by a teacher.

I was wondering if it's okay for a kindergarten teacher to dress that way in the US. Recently one of my husband's friends sent us a picture of his daughter's kindergarten teacher. Considering what she was wearing, there was little left to the imagination. At kindergarten, we teachers often get down to the kids level and we are usually squatting on the floor or running around with them...I wouldn't have been able to carry off something like that on a daily basis!

I agree, I think that it can take away from the learning process in one way and then in a nother, as a girl you look up to your teacher and want to be like them, and there is no way a kindergartner should dress in the same way she did at times.. lol

The standard here as dropped also. The male teachers tend to wear smart shirts and trousers which is pretty normal, although the female one's tend to wear clothes which are quite revealing and there's a certain one who wears tones of makeup, with low cut tops all the time. Pretty much most of the parents of her group always comment on her and at first I thought they was being harsh but some do have a point as it sets a very bad example. I think they should wear what they want within reason, as long as 1) They look smart, 2) They set an example
