lol...ugh!!! I hate reading a book and then seeing the movie!! The movie ruins it for me! The characters never look like I thought, and they leave out awesome parts...
Maybe I just should stop reading or watching the movie after...
Has this ever happened to you? Or have you liked watching the movie after reading the book?

It happened to me with the Narnia series. They turned it into some cutesy little movie for kids, the book was more serious and dramatic. It's actually somewhat an allegory of the bible and it was a million times better then the movie. Anyway, I just accepted the fact that the book will ALWAYS be better then the movie.

I hear that the movie ruins the book all the time. I never get a chance to enjoy reading, don't really care for movies. My mom loves to read, she tells me that all though Gone with the Wind was a good movie the book was so much better. Have you seen the size of that book?

It has happened many times to me. I hardly ever see a movie that compares to the book. But I always like reading the novel before I watch the film. I am doing that right now with Pillars of the Earth. I am currently reading it and I am waiting until I am finished with the book to watch the program on Starz. I think reading the book helps because it may help you understand the movie as they often leave things out. I can't imagine what it was like to watch the Movie the Di Vinci Code without having read the book! I have only seen 1 or 2 movies that did justice to the book. I thought Interview with a Vampire was an excellent adaptation of the book and I also liked the Lord of the Rings Trilogy even though they left many things out.

If reading a book makes you get the feeling of deja vu then i'd advise you to skip the book. But there are movies like the Godfather where the plot is intricate.I don't think merely viewing the movie will suffice. To get the correct picture its best we read the book beforehand.

When you read the book then watch the movie after, usually you would get really disappointed because the movie was not able o do justice to the book. I'm like you too. I read then watch after coz I get curious on how it's like when it's a movie. But I have come to accept the fact that movies will be different as they add or delete scenes for cinematic purposes and they can't pack the who story in a 2 hour movie.

There are your own images in your mind when you reading a book. According to your understanding, you portrayed characters in your mind.
But while watching a movie, you just follow the idea of director. The characters are portrayed by the director. You just watch it.

I've done it both ways, generally speaking, I do understand that a book is hard to condense into a movie - most movie's really can't accommodate more than a short story's worth of info, so if its a novel, some awesome stuff will get left out...
Now, I thought leaving out the whole "house elf" thing from the latest Harry Potter movie was a good move - I thought it was a waste of time in the book.
I know that some people were mad that they left out the whole Tom Bombidil thing from the first Lord of the Rings movie, but it was just a distraction from the storyline and was the right thing to do...
maybe do a whole movie just to tell Tom Bombidil's story

I'm a huge avid reader. I like books MORE than movies! (ALL GASP!) Somehow I wound up at film school. I'm sort of an aspiring filmmaker. (Sort of. I'd explain but it would take too long and confuse too many people)
I can really talk for hours when it comes to book to film adaptations... but I'll sum it up quick for you. Basically, film and the written word are two different mediums. There are things you can't do in film that you can do in a book and vise versa. For instance... Showing Internal conflict in a book is easy and it's often very dramatic. Internal conflict on the screen is not easy. It usually requires a voice over. And it ends up pretty cheesy. In a book you can describe exactly what's going through a character's head, what the atmosphere is like, and what things smell like. In a movie you're limited to what you can show visually.
When you're reading a book then you can envision the scenes and the characters really however you want. Your vision of the characters is probably not going to match up with your best friend's vision of the character. Or even the author of the book. But that's okay... because the vision is yours to create. In a film... it's handed to you. Not much fun, right?
That's one of the reasons that book to film adaptations disappoint fans. They expect it to be the exact same picture they saw in their head when they read the book... and it's not going to be. No matter how hard the filmmakers try, no matter how picky the casting direction is, no matter how awe-inspiring and utterly brilliant the set designers are... chances are they're not going to line up with everyone's vision of the book.
I'm not picky about how the characters look or how the scenes appear. What I'm picky about is plot and character development. If the movie deviates too much from the story is the book and makes changes that aren't necessary to the format conversion... then I don't enjoy the movie. If the character go on some strange emotional tangent or are completely different personality-wise from the person they were in the book... don't enjoy that one either.
Book to film adaptations I LOVED: The Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Last Unicorn, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and Holes
Book to film adaptations I DIDN'T like: Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Ella Enchanted, Eragon, and Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief.
Just because a movie may disappoint you doesn't mean that you stop reading books or stop enjoying the books that got adapted. So the movie didn't live up to the book... big deal! The source material is still there for you to enjoy, and it is by no means ruined! And don't let the fear of being disappointed keep you from going to see the movie. Just know what kinds of things to except... like characters different from how you pictured them and scenes that get cut out. There are some real crummy adaptations out there, but there are some really great ones too.

From one book lover and movie buff to another, HATS OFF to you...for a very insightful response. Probably one of the most relevant responses I've come across on this site. Thank you for saving me the trouble of typing all that :P I don't think I could have said it any better anyways.

Thank you for the hats off and you're welcome! Glad I could save your happy fingers the effort.
I can really talk for ages about this. I think the last time the subject came up on the Chronicles of Narnia forum, I typed up a whole book.

Stories such as Harry Potter, in the book, it's very detailed but in the movie it's not! We all know that movie is not fully detailed and there are some changes that we can observed. Of course,Movies, they have to make the story short and it is time limited! Well for stage play, maybe it can be detailed just like the book.
I experienced this one, when I was watching THE EXORCIST, IT seemed the story was misleading because I already read the book. I just tried to watch it and finished the movie. Anyways, it's a scary movie and I like it!
