Unknown, private, nothing .... do you answer?

When you get an incoming call that shows on your caller ID as unknown, private, or comes up as nothing, do you answer? Do you screen, ie let it go to your voicemail and listen to the message if there is one? My question is maybe TO any of the people who might call someone randomly from an unlisted, unknown, private, number - WHY do you block the number? If it's a computer generated call, there are people on the national do not call registry. I don't accept any computer generated or recorded phone calls. EVER. If you're a person and you don't have my number through a legitimate contact, meaning I didn't GIVE it to you, then don't call me lol. Nothing irritates me as much as getting one of those calls. Does anybody here ever let them have it... like answer and cuss them out? I'm getting to the point where I might do that soon.

hi mommyboo oh Idid that today and he stared asking for several names of people who do not live in our room here at Gold crest, I stopped the collection agency person right in mid talk, I said" do you know your company has called me time after time for a dozen names, did you know this is a retirement center and you have got my private r oom, and nobody but me Mrs Hatley lives here" he stammered,"sorry maam I will delete your phone number. sorry wont happen again." so I finally put a stop to those endless computer generated calls for Nina, steven, Joan, Richard etc as I guess my number was used b efore me by s ome boarding house with ten or fifteen people all at the same address.I am on the national do not call list but it had not seemed to stop that finance company at all. I even called the phone co. and they said they could not stop it either.

I said you had better do that at once. Yes it is illegal and I would talk to the phone company about him.

We got a call ... well multiple calls from some agency who was trying to track down 'a person of interest' and they kept calling our house. This person never even LIVED here, in fact I found out he was a DISTANT relative of someone who used to live here but it has been at least 8 years since THAT person even lived here, and the phone number was different back then. Anyway, my son was unlucky enough to answer one of the latter calls from the agency and when he complained that he had no idea who the guy was asking for... this 'person of interest', the agency guy told my son 'ha, he does SO live there, I'll just call back for him later'. WTF? Isn't it illegal to harrass someone like that?

well I think that its interesting to answer to such calls, makes my curiosity to awake every time with questions like "who might that be... I must know!" and I usually find out that its a recorded commercial or someone who wants me to answer a telephone survey XD but one time when I answered that kind of call I heard my friend on the other side, he said that he is stuck somewhere and need a ride back to town, told me that he is using someone's cellphone- that's I am always answering, might never know if someone who needs me is in trouble...

I can always tell if it's one of my friends calling me... plus friends will tell you who they are immediately. If it sounds unfamiliar, I won't even admit that it's me, I will say 'may I ask who's calling' and if it's some jerk I don't want to talk to, I'll say 'ok I'll take a message' or 'she's not available right now' or sometimes 'you have a wrong number' LOL!

Usually I let it go to voice mail. On very rare occasions, I might say what the heck, and answer. But, my default position is, if I don't recognize the number, I won't pick up.

I had an incident where I actually answered an 'unavailable' and the only reason I did it AT ALL was because I thought it was my husband calling from a pay phone since he left his cell on the desk. It turned out to be some guy I didn't know who thought I was someone else he knew. He sang to me and tried to hit on me, it was bizarre. He then continued to call me back for the next several weeks. This is one reason I really wish it were possible to delegate all unknown or calls you don't want to a reject voicemail.

I am beginning to get to know what calls are soliciting and what ones are legitimate. Normally, I would not answer and unknown or provate number but since we run a business, we often do answer those calls. Many 800# calls however, we do not. When I do answer a private or unknown number, more often than not am I glad I answered after all. If it is someone soliciting, I first ask them where they got the number, I ask them if they have a customer service number and I write it down, along with the name of the company. Then I request that they please take my number off of their calling list. By law, they have to. If they do not and continue to call, I make a call to their customer service and demand that our number is taken off. So far that has worked. If you are getting a lot of these calls, I suggest to answer and if it is a soliciting phone call, do the above. It may help put an end to these unknown and private number calls.

I have reported two businesses who didn't stop calling to the national do not call registry by filing complaints. After the complaints were investigated, I received no more calls from those businesses. I know they were fined because the hard copy information sent to me showed them to be in the wrong for continually calling me sometimes up to 7 times a day, which of course the businesses tried to deny, but I kept track. My phone records reflected how many times those numbers continued to call AFTER I spoke with a manager and requested to be removed. I also had warned them I would report them to the do not call registry as non compliant if they kept calling, so I did. I think there needs to be a more direct way of bringing the hammer down, so to speak. I am not afraid to get my hands dirty to force some idiotic business to quit calling me, but I wish it was quicker and easier to do it and they couldn't get retribution in any way.

I can get so many sales calls from people, that if it comes up as caller unknown, I let the answer-service get the call. I can hear the person calling if they speak, and if it is important, they will speak. I will then decide whether to call back or not - most often it is not, because my family and friends do not withhold their number, but tele-sales businesses do. _Derek

I like to play it safe when receiving a phone call. If i don't see a name or number on my caaller ID screen, I usually let my answering machine pick it up. If it tuerns out to be someone I know, then I will stop the machine and take the call. I don't like unknown or private calls. Thet drive me crazy. I want to know who is calling me.

I take that one further... I expect people to actually know who they are calling before they call me. I have answered before by saying 'hello' and the person on the other end - THE ONE CALLING ME - has actually said 'who's this?' Excuse me, WHO'S THIS? YOU called ME. If you don't know who you're calling after you dialed the number, then you are too stupid to own a phone lol.

Hi, mommyboo. Yes, I have gotten many calls like this. At first, I will answer the call. Then later when I found out that the call was just about a bunch of junk, that is when I will not answer the call anymore. I will just let the phone ring and ring.. Sometimes I have answered the telephone playing around. I will disguise my voice and I will act like I am someone else. My voice will sound all rough and I will scream like crazy. I will then hang up the phone on them too. This is my way of telling them that I am getting tired of them calling me all of the time. I don't answer private numbers because every time that I answer the call, no one says anything on the line. So, I just let these calls just ring on out. If I have a voice mail, then then that is when they will meet Mr. or Mrs. answering service then.

I never ever answer calls that are labeled unknown because my only phone is a cellular phone and I definitely don't want to waste my minutes on recorded messages. When there are calls that come in from area codes that I don't recognize, I don't typically answer those either, I'll let my voicemail screen for me. However, I always answer local calls regardless of whether or not I recognize the number because it could always be business.

I only answer when I know the person. Most of the time when it says unknown or private it is probably nobody I want to hear from. I have an unlisted phone number and hate it when someone gets a hold of my number. I had my husband's ex get ahold of the number and m husband and I were pretty upset. She claims that a family member gave it to her, but I highly doubt it. I am wondering how can someone get a phone number if it is unlisted?

I'm not sure. I have had my cell number for 5 years now... imported from a different carrier twice - and our home number we have had for probably 7 years. I am still unsure why we get calls for other people at both numbers... and I have them listed with the do not call registry. Recently my husband started getting calls on his cell, which is even odder. His number is completely unlisted, we don't give it to ANYBODY. One of my closest friends has his number, I have the number, and I think a few guys from his work have the number, well and our older kids have it too. we don't voice call it though, it's basically texting only. That's it. So we can't figure out how anybody else got ahold of it - except the people calling it aren't even calling for HIM, so go figure. It's still annoying to get multiple phone calls per day FOR someone else and when you tell them to remove the number they say they will but then they call AGAIN. It's enough to make me want to shoot somebody. I asked the carrier if they could block all incoming calls except for from specific numbers and they said they can't. If I have to consolidate everything and then use parental controls to do it down the road, I might lol. I think with parental controls you can basically have a phone with unlimited everything BUT you can block all inc calls EXCEPT for specific numbers, and also block texts except from specific numbers. Therefore he could still call and text anybody he wants but nobody except the people he wants to hear from can contact him. That would be perfect. I'd do the same on my phone.

When I do not have an idea who the hell the person is calling, I just let it ring until the person gets tired of calling. But since its cellphone, I insert in another sim to prevent him/ them from calling. There are just some people who does not have anything to do with their lives but to dial random numbers! Its making me SICK!

If the phone rings when i am near to it then i will answer it, & more often than not put it down. I don't tend to answer unknown numbers on my mobile.

If it posts an unregistered no. i normally don't answer it. especially if i'm not expecting a call. I believe that if i don't take it, and the call is important, the person will send a message informing yours truly of his/her intention. Sometimes, people without nothing to do with their precious life, lay lazy and dial numbers thinking it would gain fruitful results...well..these people are obviously bum, so never ever entertain calls who doesn't give proper introduction and purpose...

Usually I do answer just out of curiosity but if I have an idea of who it may be then I avoid it lol. I hate it when people ring with a hidden number it's really annoying and it's usually sales people who do it so I have to listen to their rubbish before I say I'm not interested and end the call. Now I'm a bit harsher and swear at them, and anyone else who annoys me with a hidden number.

Hi mommyboo, I will be polite with any unknown number in the first instance. There may be a chance to get wrong number even if we dial the correct number. I will tell them that they got a wrong number. If the same caller calls me again then I may get disturbed. I won’t attend the call in second time. Some people are very funny; they will start to talk continuously without checking that they got the ‘right/wrong number’. They don’t give a chance to tell that ‘you got the wrong person’. Some are commanding that give the phone to a particular person (without knowing that they got wrong number).

At one time, I did have caller ID blocking. I just didn't feel like my phone number was anybody's darn business unless I actually chose to give it to them. This is back when caller ID was a new concept. Then I ran into a few family members that I couldn't call because they wouldn't accept blocked calls. So I unblocked it. Now it isn't a big deal one way or the other. If I get a call I don't want, I'll just hang up. If I don't feel like answering, I'll let the machine screen them.

I answer all calls whether it is listed in my directory or not. However I always end up unwanted call abruptly I find it not really worth of my time. There are calls which offers this and that and I have no patience with that kind of calls so I immediately express myself honestly. When I don't like the call, I say I don't like the call and I will hang up whether the person on the other line likes it or not.

Hi mommyboo! How are you? Chat me up sometime, I miss you! I refuse to answer a private caller, unknown caller, out of area, or any other such "mystery" numbers! I don't want to talk to anyone selling anything! I am supposed to be on the "Do Not Call List" but, obviously that doesn't mean a damn thing! When I see the name of the caller or don't see the name of the caller, I decide if I'm going to answer it or not, and it it isn't someone I know or want to talk to I let it go to Voicemail, where they usually hang up! I warn my friends if they don't show their number I an not going to answer! My number isn't private because I don't want to pay extra to have it blocked! But, it is really annoying to get these calls every single day and some of them do call day after day even when I never answer!
