How does your dog welcome you?

I was browsing thru a photo archive, when I found one picture of my parents' dog, Rex. He was a nice mongrel who lived happy until the age of 14. He died two years ago.
He had such a wonderful way of greeting people!
Usually, dogs jump on people when greeting them. But Rex had a different way of greeting people. He used to rise his front paws in the air, without even touching the person who was welcomed.
I can't convince Binne to do the same, and I'm wondering how other's dogs welcome their owners. Have your dog a special way of greeting people?

What is the best way to teacha dog to stop jumping up and down? And I mean, without actually touching you or anything, but it is still pretty annoying. How did you teach your dog this?

We were taught to bring a knee up and block them in the chest. This has always worked well of us I have even tried it with strange dogs. Usually I camand down or no to reinforce the act. I always greet our dogs by bringing my hand down where they can snuff it and a short greeting, no excitement is encouraged.

Aw, Rex is adorable inu, and I would love to know how your parents taught him to do that..Because my puppies greet us with a "In your face" jumping, licking, spinning around you kind of greeting..The first thing I do before they even get near me is say, "Off,off, off" Like it does any good...

I am calm, but firm when I tell them "Off"...Been doing it so long, I am starting to sound monotone..lol

Oops! You're trying to tell me that I have no chances with "being calm"? It means there is no hope for me? (just kidding)
Yet I'll try to change my attitude toward Binne when arriving home. I think some day it won't be funny any more when she'll tear some of my clothes with her claws and her energy...
I wonder how can you manage the energy of two Binnes...

My parents never taught him to do so. Maybe his previous owner (if he ever had one before my parents adopted him from the street) did that, I don't know. But he was really cute, wasn't he?
It's funny that any time I read about your Penny and Ciara, I realise they behave the same way Binne does. She has the same kind of greeting - she jumps, she licks and sometimes she even bites a litle, and my words are useless.
@Savypat gave me a good advice earlier in this discussion, and I'll try to put it in practice starting from today. The key words are "be calm". I'll tell you if it works for Binne.

When we are away from home our dog is usually lying in front of the door waiting for us. When we open the door he is always ready to welcome us He usually gets so excited that he doesn't know what to do. He runs around in circles, jumps on us (we are trying to teach him to stop that) and tries to find some toys that he can show us. If we give him some treats or some new toys while we are away, he usually ignores them at first, but when we get back home, he eats the treats, plays with the new toys etc.

When we come home our dog is also soo excited to see us that she just want to be as close to us as possible. I never alow her to jump on mee and she knows that so she does give me my space to come in, take off my shoes and coat, put down my bag and other things I have in my hands. Only then she can come to me and gets attention. With My boyfriend however it's totally different. When he comes in, she goes crazy, she jumps on him and really demands attention immediatly.
When other people enter she's more affraid, we found her as a little pup on the street and so everytime she meets other people she wants to go to them and play with them but the moment they move or try to pet her, she's gone.
So she has different greeting pattorns for different people.

Yes, I think a lot of people do that, greet different people in different ways. My dog does not so much, but some of my friend's dogs are like that as well.

It seems your dog really respects you! If not, she would go crazy when you come home, too. Probably your boyfriend have never asked her to give him space to come.
As for the strangers, you can ask them to ignore her until she feels confortable in their presence. She will eventually get rid of her shyness.

This thread makes me want a dog. My neighbour has a dog called Sparky and he always runs up to me and starts licking me lol not sure if that's his way of saying hello. Dogs can be better than humans sometimes. Sorry for your loss, that's probably the hardest part of having a pet - the time when they pass away. I will get a dog when I own my own home.

My dog sniffs me to see were I've been. Then she goes outside to pee and come back and waits for attention. I would never allow any dog to jump on me. It is disrespectful. I am the human. I am the pack leader. She needs to respect that. A lower ranking dog never jumps on the pack leader. My dog is very well trained and rarely does anything wrong. I trained her with love and compassion using positive reinforcement.

I agree with you. When a dog jumps on other dog, this means disrespect.
But when greeting us, dogs only want to lick our face. This is an inherited behaviour you can see even in wild wolf packs. All the lower ranking wolves greet their pack leader this way, and this is not disrespect. But the pack leader wolf is as tall as the other member of the pack, so they don't need to jump on him to touch and lick his face. This is not valid for domesticated dogs, as we - the pack leaders - are more taller than dogs. If you bend to meet a dog in doggie way, you'll be surprised he won't jump any more.

Oops! Another dog who barks when his people are comming home! Don't you have problems with your neighbours? Or maybe you have a big yard, and the neighbours are not disturbed by this noise. We live in an apartment, and we are not allowed to do too much noise.

My Dog (Jumbo - 1 year old chit szu) barks out loud (sound of excitement). When I wave my hand he will stop barking and will run and sit in front me. When he saw unusual person inside the house he will sit beside the door and will bark and wont stop unless we say "stop". Jumbo will site beside the main door and will wait until the visitor go out.

Hi inu1711, when i saw that photo of Rex, it brought back memories of my late dog Cutie. She would greet people the same way. When they entered the home she would stand on her hind legs and raise her front paws and move them up and down rapidly. I never taught her to do it but she did it. I think that like Rex, Cutie was simply a special dog.

I have three Chihuahuas. They are my little darlings, and they are spoiled rotten. They live better than some people I know, and I am thankful that I can give them this lifestyle. When I come home from work in the afternoons, they run to the door wagging their tails and running in circles, but they won't usually try to jump up on me until I bend down to play with them. When I sit down on the couch, the all gather around me and take turns getting treats and giving kisses and getting their bellies rubbed...

You don't have to feel bad for the lifestyle your dogs have. What should we do, have our family starve because there are people on Earth who are starving?
I think it's a pleasure to meet your three dogs. I like the way small breed dogs gather around and share the love of their master.

My dog usually gets too excited when I arrive at home. He often gets too excited that he forget to jump on you, rather he prefer running all around the yard for a period of time, maybe 2 minutes running non-stop, then finally he comes to jump on you. He is the most excited dog I ever have... I never let my dog enter in the house but when he does all this, he look so innocent that I let him enter for a little while playing in

My dog is pretty small, so he always tries to jump up and down, not on the people so much, but right in front of them. I am trying to teach him to stop it though....

I imagine your dog is from a small breed. But try to imagine Binne doing the same - and she is almost 20 kilos! When I lift her in my arms, she starts licking and sometimes even biting my ears, especially my left ear. I don't know what does she find so interesting in my left ear. :))

My dog, actually, welcomes me almost the same way as yours does. I really like him. But, infront of different people(strangers) you know that his greeting is obviously going to be different. My dogs' greeting was sort of like a growl on the stranger. Although my dog wouldn't do anything to him but he wouldn't stop growling on him until I say its okay haha. Gotta train him a little harder maybe.
