If you're not aware of this yet, Hip Dysplasia is an abnormal formation of the hip socket, in it's ore severe form, can eventually cause a crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints. This condition is very common in many dog breeds, more so for larger breeds of dogs. When diagnosed with this, Vets usually advise the owners to put their dog to sleep or have their dog go through an operation to replace the hip bones, socket and everything and is quite expensive... Now im asking you if you do have a dog with this type of condition, what would you do?

It would depend how much pain the dog was in. If I couldn't control the pain with meds I would put the dog to sleep. It comes down to quality of life and motive for keeping the dog alive. There is no way we could afford the opperation. This is why I am so careful when getting a puppy, I want xrays and a clean bill of health before I pay my money. If I am taking a rescue I will provide the xray before I finallize the exchange.

The problem is genetic. First thing is to take them out of the breeding pool via spay/neuter regardless if you plan on keeping the dog as a pet or put them down. Another thing to consider is, is the dog a guard dog or a pet? How much money are you willing to spend? Me, myself and I, I'm a bit "cold" and analytical, but my current dogs are pets of my daughter so I would try to keep them as long as they don't suffer.

yeah... it's genetic. breeding your dog wth this condition is a big NO NO. my gf had a dog with this, they wanted to get an operation but it's not yet available in Cebu City (Philippines). what they did was give him some vitamins (Calcium) and some pain killers which in the long run would be bad for him.

I've seen it on a couple of our dachshunds and it is very common to these breeds. We have no money for the operation before so we just waited until the time that they can no longer walk and let them get nursed until they passed away.
