How did you land on your first job? I am trained to become a programmer but you know what? I dont enjoy it :D i like to do research, implement system, maintain it even fixing database issues. I'm not sure what to choose from at first so when the institution where i graduated is looking for additional staff i applied putting "any position that suits my qualification" in the cover letter. Guess what i was told to demo teach one week after the interview. I dont know what to demonstrate i end up with flowcharting :) and that was it the rest were taking examinations and got the offer. Yes you get it right i dont like programming but i end up teaching basic programming i have no choice but to learn how to program :(. Until now this is not the first job i have but i still programming.

I still cannot forget that fateful day. I still had a year on my college and I came to know of a company that was recruiting people. They were giving flexi timings so that college students could also join in if they were really good. So for fun's sake I had just walked into the interview. The interview was on C++ which I was teaching in some computer institutes already, so I was feeling supremely confident.
As the interview began, the first question came up and suddenly I was all worked up as the question was a direct lift from my favorite C++ book!! A book that I had read cover to cover some 20 odd times and which I could recite entirely!! Then the second, third and all the questions started coming from the book and you could really understand the fun I was having. It all boiled down to one question which when the panel asked I told them that the question was incorrect and there was a lot of jostling in the panel how this arrogant boy is challenging a well known book!! I then proceeded to explain them why it was wrong. Of course, some time back I had written to the author of that book and had confirmed that this portion had got wrongly printed!! So overall for me it was a cakewalk.
Later on when I joined the company, I came to know that they were just about starting their C++ division and that is why the interviewers were picking the questions straight from the book!! :)
Cheers!

In this case as I had read the book and had also taught from the book at the place where I was teaching, it was really easy. Also, I had written back to the author with respect to quite a few mistakes which were there in the first edition of that book and they were duly corrected in the later editions, so it really was a breeze :)
But as they say I need luck to flow my way after having so many disappointments before that.
Cheers!

:) C++ did have your interest which made you read it cover to cover. The only book that is related to my field i read from cover to cover was the introduction to data structures. And i too almost memorized the whole book. But that was during my teaching years.

Yeah that sounds like you had an easy time with your interview after studying the book many times over.It is really a good idea that you did so as you had no trouble with the questions the interviewers asked you as they were straight from the text you read over and over.Programming can either be easy for a person and come naturally or it can be almost impossible for some that lack logic skills and math skills as well.If you are not an organized person programming can be something you just cant handle.

My friend offer me a job, she introduce me to his boss and I got the job. I didn't find the job interesting, for I see myself working for nothing. I always wait for 5pm to come, my time out. So I work only for 3 months. After that looking for a better job, until I worked again in other Company where I enjoy now.

LOL! That usually happen when you are bored. I've seen a lot of employee's here mostly in government agencies. We sometimes call them 15-30. Glad you found the job you enjoy the most.

My very first job I got through my mother. She worked (still does) in a shopping mall, and the owner of another store in the mall needed help and didn't know anyone who could fill in on short notice, so my mom said she would ask me. And I wound up working there for awhile.

My mom helped me get my first job. I wanted to work in daycare for a long time. She knew a woman who owned a daycare. I went and talked to the woman and her partner for an interview. They hired me right away. I worked there for awhile before I ended up moving out of state with my boyfriend. I liked the job for the most part.

I did volunteer work for the local library and museum during junior high, and was offered part time jobs there when I got a bit older. The resumées from these jobs landed me substitute teaching positions during college, and then it was easy to get at "real" teaching job later. But I'm very lucky, there is almost no unemplyment where I live; less than 5 %.
My husband is like you. He has worked as a programmer for 20 years, and hates it more and more. He has tried to apply for everything; shop clerk, janitor, security guard, etc, but the only jobs he get are programming jobs. Even when he applied for a janitor job for a computer company, they offered him a position as programmer. Now we are trying to fix things so he can work part time selfemployed, and part time be a house"wife".

Hmmm thanks gajamor this made me think, maybe there something in there that is missing. And i have to find what is soon. It's because your husband cv's are mostly in programming and when the programming firm read it they know that your husband can be an additional resources to their programming needs.

I got my first job after handing out lots and lots of cv's. I work at primark along side my uni studies, and it not something i enjoy too much (i mean, i'm a guy, dont care so much about clothes etc), but i find making friends there makes it much more bearable.
Its a bit ironic that you ended up in a job in one of the web things that you didn't want to do, i hope that it works out for you in the end.

I dont kow ninja. Maybe this is what they call fate. When i first join this organization i was assigned to do the i things i like the most. Only after two years, my supervisor told me that i dont have much room for knowledge growth in the field and he saw some potential in programming in me. I told him i will try but guess what i was able to finish the project alone. And now im starting another.

If you want to be happy then do a job that makes you happy. I can clearly see that you are not satisfied with your job. I too was one of your kind when I landed in the wrong job. Although I got good salary and that initially made me go for the job. After few months I realized that I am not being fair to me, so I quit the next day. Although I had trouble to get a job that I wanted but eventually I got. Though I am earning less compared to my previous job but I am really happy with what I am doing. Good luck for you as well.

It is not all satisfaction that is involved in here ashton. Yes sometimes i feel bad when things aren't smooth. That's when i cant get anything form my head that i would say "why the hell i am in this job?. What am i doing in here?" LOL
