What do you think is the age of the earth?

Christians continue to debate about the age of the earth? Do you think the earth is just only some 6,000 years old or some 4.5 billion years old? What do you think the Scripture says?
Which position, do you think, is more faithful to the text and less harmful for Christian belief?

hi head hunter
this is always a good debate, and until recently have taken the bible to be the reference, to how creation came about., without that much thought with faith... but i have watched a study by the KOINONIA Institue, on Genesis, the creation and science... now the man who give the lecture is an engineer/science person and also a believer his name is Chuck Missler.,
In the lectures H e goes through the book of genisis line by line and brings what modern science has found, so it relates to particles and quantum physics, and the build up of cells dna and so forth... it is scientifically based and rather than disprove the bible it actually shows how it is accurate...
It is worth looking up., because the measurement of time, etc is also explained..
It has brought to me a deeper understanding of the world and creation and how Great God is to have created us all
hope this is helpful
because there are deliberate false evidences or so called also been put out.. check it aout
best wishes
x

What did he say about the age of the earth? Or have you given enough hint by saying that since he found the Bible and science to agree, he basically agrees that the earth is very old, not 6,000 years old. I agree though there are lot of materials out there which are based on false evidences.

Yes, it is realized that the earth is younger than what it was thought to be. But that is evidence led. And my view is that we should go where evidence is leading us.

Lets see. science is trying to prove the bible wrong by this theory, The EARTH is some billion years old. They point out dinosaurs lived 45 million years before man. But in the bible, there is what they call dragons, Water dragon, earth dragon, sky dragon. I think Bibles today have re phrased the bible and do not contain any dragon word anymore, because they thought that it was fiction.
So try to find a good bible like the king james version.
I think 6000 years ago as GOD created MAN along with all kinds of animals including Dragons A.K.A Dinosaurs. The great flood drowned them instantly. Does explaining those standing FOSSILS of dinosaurs.

I don't think Science is trying to prove Bible wrong. I think Science is going where the evidence leads. Perhaps, later if evidence suggests something else Science will head towards that. So for Science it's about interpretation of data.
Even for Bible I think interpreters can go wrong. The Bible may not say this or that, but one can read it in a particular way and argue saying that the Bible actually says that view. So I think Bible readers must also carefully and diligently interpret the Bible.
In Genesis text I don't come across any dragon. Or is it there? Btw, I learnt that very early Christian theologian like St. Augustine did not believe in the theory that the earth is some 6,000 years old.

Even today most scientist don't work to prove Bible wrong. Scientists are like normal people working to make bread and butter, so to speak. There are scientist out there trying to prove that Bible is wrong, but such people, I guess, are more in number in Psychiatry and Psychology than in Science. I know that the word "dragon" comes in Revelation, but never read about it in Genesis. Good day!

Hmm some early scientist at that. I think there is a religion based on science. Anyway back to the topic. The bible is indeed re phrased lots of times. Some word/word's are just not the same, and this may vary the contents meaning as well. The earliest bible states the Dragon 3 times or more I believe, and it definitely described what dragon is. And it's was described as a diplodocus with long tail, tree trunk like feet, etc etc.
But you are definitely correct on Bible readers that needs to be careful. Lots of Bible readers look at the bible and decode it. Sometimes they see what they want to see and blame it to the bible, which is unfair.

When you read Genesis Chapter 1:1-2 God created the earth and the earth was formless. It never said exactly when God created the earth. After sometime God created the rest of the things that we now see. So it is possible God created the things in the earth in 7 days (whichever measure He used does not matter) but the earth was created probably several years earlier.

Thank you for your post. I am inclined to agree with you. It is created in 7 days but the Bible does not explain further what '7 days' actually means. It is unfortunate that some Christians are so convinced about their argument that having to interpret the duration of 7 days different from what they believe are considered as near heresy.

i think, i'll simply trust the bible because God said in John 1:1 - ...and the word was God. and I totally trust God.

I trust the Bible too completely. But I also won't make the Bible say what it does not say.

"Sufficient" is the word I would use "for the salvific purpose and godly living". I would not say Bible is complete in term of giving scientific knowledge or other things because the Bible chose not to get into those things in detail except for mentioning here and there.

hmm.. i think the bible is complete. you just have to find out what it is. and people are people, they always have wondering minds... that is because of the first sin. and after decades, many had misinterpreted the bible until God is the most misinterpreted Being in this world.
