so detrimental to my earnings, I spend more time reading than posting...

I was observing my own behaviour here on mylot and was somewhat horrified to find that I spend a lot of time reading posts since there are so many interesting topics here. I would see some topic I'm interested in, go in and read it, then at the end of it all, I find that everybody has said everything that is possible to be said . So then I move on to the next topic and the next, by then a whole hour has passed by....and I have not posted anything Do you find yourself doing that or you post more than you read?

Bluemoonpavilion, you took the words right out of my mouth. The same thing has happened to me several times. There have been several discussions that I have read without posting either because I felt that everything had been said that needed to be said, or sometimes I come across discussions that I would have nothing to contribute but that would assist me in my problems. I have read discussions on technical problems with computers. I would be totally unqualified to comment on these, but I have read them to gain advice to make my computer more secure. I have started to force myself to post to avoid becoming some unknown silent lurking presence, but I think that though financially it is not good to be reading without posting, you never know that you might not learn something that could be of tremendous use or value to you.

I have learnt a lot since joining this site. Like you I read around and get advice on things. I once learnt something like toothpaste acts as a better nail polish than the real stuff, and I would never have known that if not for someone starting a topic on it. It's amazing what people carry in their minds.

rich, It's good to open our minds to new stuff, even scary stuff. We need all the angles to this life.

Toothpaste is better than nail polish? It might be better than clear nail polish, but what about people who want red fingernails. I have heard toothpaste is wonderful for cleaning jewellry, however. It is supposed to really polish up diamonds.

I read a heck of a lot on here but while I am reading, if I see an interesting response then I drop a comment on to it too. There is a lot to learn when reading and a lot of fun to be had when adding comments, especially to boxes where the users are not expecting them

I'm starting to like doing that, appearing when it's least expected, drop witty (? I think) comments here and there and putting a wow on their faces hehe

Hi Ms D, Thanks for dropping by, and you did surprised me the first time round... So far I have only encountered Alice once....hope that means I'm doing fine here and do not warrant the long arms of the law Yeah, I agree there is no "best" responder but there are lots of GOOD ones...

As far as I have observe here in mylot MYSD is one of the best responder that I've been monitoring he always make a topic very interesting I don't actually know what's with him but I bet he has the best of sense of comment here for his and expert as well as a pro. I look forward to see more of it.

if I see an interesting discussion - even tho they tell us to read all the responses, they also give us the option to go directly to responding when you get notifications - so I do that, so I respond more, and read less... lazy ain't I?

I do that sometimes when I'm overwhelmed by the long discussions but I try to read through to see the direction it is going. Many times I find myself very caught up in the reading rather than responding, thus the topic of this discussion.

THis is indeed a quandry! I know I spend much more time than I can afford on the Lot, posting OR reading! It is quite a balancing act, but to be a good commenter, you need to be a good reader (listener) *SIGH* so many interests, so little time

I am embarassed to say, I don't always read everything through completely either. If the post is particularly compelling, but has a lot of responses, and I just don't have time to read everything, I will go through quickly to try to get the gist of what has already been said and then plunge in. *plunging, not always wise* *hangs head in shame* But if people on the Lot weren't so annoyingly INTERESTING! I wouldn't have to give in to temptation! *passes blame to 'all interesting people'*

Very very true, quote "to be a good commentator, you have to be a good reader". I wish everyone thinks like you do, actually take the trouble to read through everything (I can't admit I have done that 100%), then come up with quality responses. I think these are the ones I really enjoy reading and commenting back. Thanks sulynsi for the enlightening response!

Most definatly, it's what I have been doing most of my time today!! Sometimes it just seems that what you would have to add to the conversation would be completely inadequate - I bet we've been reading the same discussions

Hello Bluemoonpavilion. You're not alone, I do the same. It's been hard to find stuff to write about on here the last day or so and I've been reading some people's old discussions for ages ago. When I read them I think I want to write something but someone has always said what I wanted to say so now I'll try to stick to kust the new discussions :)

Hi AutumnGold, Very nice avatar! I gather you are a writer? I think this is a good place to draw inspiration from and there are many here who can write very well and we can pick up writing skills from them too.
27 Jul 10
Thank you, it's a beautiful Autumn scene. I'm not a writer but my English has to be decent for my job so I try not to use too much local slang when I'm writing on here :)

Sorry I made a misspelling. "kust" should say "just" sorry about that :)

I find myself spending lots of time reading but I still post a response even if a lot of other people said exactly what I have to say. That is what a discussion is, something you want to say and let others comment if they want to say something about your response. It doesn't matter if what you have to say is the same as others, you are here to earn some money just like the rest of us, so post whatever you want. As this discussion is 8 months old and you have less than 1000 by your name, I don;t think your here anymore or like you said, you read lots and don't participate too much, not fair to you if your not earning. Have a good day my friend, Chris

Hi Chris, I do spend a lot of time reading and I only comment when I feel that I have something to add on, that what I said will add value to the discussion. I hope not to repeat what others have said, unless it is to emphasize a certain point. I have disappeared for a long time but now I wanted to get active again. Hope to see more responses from you, thanks.

Honestly that is the reason why I try not to read people's responses anymore because whenever I do, it's frustrating to know that somebody else had answered exactly the way I imagined it. What I do though is to express that I second the answer of the others and key in my own unique point of view.

So this is a case of great minds think alike, and also a chance for us to exercise our minds and somehow say things in a different way. Sometimes I try to see it from another angle too and I benefit from this whole thinking process.

Hi bluemoon! Absolutely. The beauty of life is not always expressed in dollars and cents. I know I can say this about you. The knowledge from reading all these is far more priceless. Knowledge allows us to feel the essence of life and sets us apart from all the other things around. As we enrich ourselves we enrich others as well. I think that's why we are all here.

Hi tomi, It's always a pleasure to read your post! It is so enlightening and well put and this is just the reason why I read more than I post. I really think there is much to be learnt still, some lessons would stay with me for life.

You took the words right out of my mouth. As I read some posts and find myself interested in the topic, I find myself reading the comments of others and find that there's really nothing more to say without sounding repetitive. And sometimes, I get amused by the discussions that I tend to just read them and not join in. Then I'd look at all the time that's passed and be horrified to find out that I spent hours being unproductive. lol

I wouldn't say it's completely detrimental, because you are learning as you read. So, you are gaining something out of it, just not exactly what you want. A lot of thins are detrimental to our earnings--pretty much life in general. We all have lives outside the computer and no matter how much we want to be on myLot 24/7, we just can't make the time. And you can even say that someone's typing speed is detrimental to their earnings. Or their internet connection.

Oops! Typo alert! "A lot of things are detrimental to our earnings..." I do agree though. Reading does waste time. And time is precious.

What a good idea and it makes me sound like I'm another whining person here I have actually gained a lot because when I feel confused/unhappy/unsure about something I would get good advice here. Then when I feel happy/funny/hilarious, I'm also glad to be able to share my joy here and spread some funny germs around.

Hi BMP, I do that my self too beforev and sometimes, now I am more active responding haha that's why I have less discussion started by me coz I just read and read more topics in different fields of my interest and there are really some nice topic and mostly are repeated topichaha fun but true, I made one topic before that has similar
• Singapore
27 Jul 10
I found a lot of repeated topics too but I didn't know I am a repeater of yours Sometimes I find that I cannot think of any responses to any posts and just satisfy myself by reading. Other times I find the responses going in a direction I like and can participate in then I become very active.

Oh I love to read specially if the topic is interesting. But one thing I'll tell you, if the post is too long? even if it is interesting I will not spend time reading. For the most part, I write more than reading. Once I read the topic, I will respond to it. I will not read a topic that I am not interested to respond. Which simply means I read only the topic that I am interested.
• Singapore
28 Jul 10
Now you are making me feel guilty for writing too many words... Yeah but one point to note is, it's better to keep the discussion topic short and to the point. Any other elaborations could be left to the comments part. Once I saw a really long post and after reading it till the end, I lost what the poster is trying to say and was too tired to re-read it, so it was totally skipped over. I would think others feel the same. I hope I don't make this mistake.

there are days when i would just read discussions the whole time i'm logged on here. there are days too when i would just read the main topic and forget about other people's responses, and just reply right away. to be honest, the first time i joined here i was really expecting "discussion" in all its real essence. but when i had posted my first response and realized that no one's actually gonna discuss it with me (and worse, i don't remember if the one who posted said discussion actually replied to my post), i thought this isn't like other discussion boards i had been part of. most are not really looking for discussions, just a topic where they can share their own thoughts and end of story. so as time goes by, i got used to it. i don't even bother anymore to comment on other people's comments. although, sometimes i still couldn't resist it, i really want to have a "discussion".
• Singapore
28 Jul 10
Could you be looking at the wrong posts all this while? I have found a lot of good discussions and they are really DISCUSSIONS, not just a question and answer kind of thing. If you take a look at some topics with many replies, maybe 20 or more, you would find that these are actually topics where the poster bothers to come back and reply back. That's what make a successful discussion. I would suggest you explore other interest and see whether this works.

I do that all the time!!! I'll get involved in a discussion and before I know it, a lot of time has passed, and I've not made a comment. Now, depending on the topic, I may or may not read every post. Sometimes I just skim through. Sometimes I may find a point I want to enlarge upon, and I will makae a note and include it in my comment.

That's what I do most of the time. Sometimes I will also respond to some discussion as and when I saw it and I couldn't resist writing a line or two.

I have also been in such situation and sometimes I just have to take a break to tell myself that I should post something. I have been here for more than a month but I was not able to post much here. But I think it is hard to choose first topic for me to respond to. After that I just start to respond to every discussion I see. I try to at least respond to ten or more discussions every day.

Participating in discussions are good too. It is not really necessary to start a discussion for earning. We get paid for the things we typed.

Well I MY behaviour is a little different than urs in mylot! What I do is open a topic which i like and then read the discussion posted after reading the discussion i dont look down for any responses to see wether if he has got te right answer which he wanted i just respond to the discussion that i know and want to write! Thats my STYLE!
• Singapore
28 Jul 10
There is no right or wrong answer. What I'm more interested in is hearing about what others think and feel. Of course you have the freedom to choose to respond to those you like and probably that is good because then you can write well about it.

"Lurking" is a bad habit I picked up reading fandom forums. But here I find myself more talkative. I think the biggest reason is that since fandom isn't a big part here the threads associated with my favorite topics are either small or haven't even started. Also politically and socially my viewpoint is rare (though sometimes inflammatory) and my perspective is unique enough that I never seem to encounter a problem not being able to add to the conversation.
• Singapore
28 Jul 10
I'm not familiar with fandom forum at all, guess it's quite similar to the other forums out there? Mylot is different because it encourages discussion rather than just pure posting, meaning there are interactions between the members and I find this suits my needs because I like to chat with people and know about the different things in the world.
