Help Stop Pet Overpopulation

Hi Everyone! This past month I have heard SO many stories about stray animals being dumped because they've had a litter and their owners couldn't deal with it. 3 weeks ago I took in a momma cat and her kittens who were about to be dumped. Just yesterday I heard 2 more stories from my friends about cats and their litters who were dumped on their properties. It's a TERRIBLE problem that is COMPLETELY preventable!! So, I had an idea... What if all pet stores were legally required to spay or neuter all dogs, cats, puppies and kittens PRIOR to sale? I decided to start a petition and have been urging all of my friends to take a look and sign it if they agree. http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/spayneuter/ What do you think? Have you ever started a petition? What did you do with it once it was signed? Do you think I should send it to my state representative or should I send it straight to Obama? THANKS!!!

sadly, online petitions aren't worth the electrons to generate them... but I do agree with you - and is why all my animals are fixed (all 33 in the household!)

33!! Wow! We have 6 and I thought that was a lot!! Both dogs are fixed. The adult cat is neutered and the 2 babies (the ones we kept from that rescued litter) are getting fixed on Tuesday. The parrot... well, he's a parrot, 'nuf said :P. I'm taking the momma cat to get spayed too, even though she's in her new home already. I know that online petitions are pretty useless... but I HAD to do something! I've contacted the ASPCA to see if they had any "real" ideas... Maybe if I get enough signatures on the online petition they might pay attention and help me do something real... Thanks for the comment!!

well, 3 are the "OTHER" roommate's pets, 2 are our dogs and the rest are the cats, the last 3 of whom were spayed last friday!

I would guess this would be something covered by state law. I'll sign, I'll sign....

Thanks Dawn!!! I was thinking it might be a state thing. I'm just worried that since this is an online petition there will be signatures from all over, not just my state... I think when I get enough signatures I'll give my state rep a call and ask their advice... I hope this idea catches on. It might have the added benefit of taking profits from puppy mills since more of the profit will go to getting the surgery done... one can only hope! :) THANKS!!

Hi Kelly, it is a good way to check and control.I will sign it too! Guess, it may soon be required for humans in my country too!

It might be better if theowner to be could choose if he wanted the pet neutered. I don´t like anyone to think for me. Although I understand that there is a problem, maybe there are different answers and not just an only one. I don´t know how that is done in the US as I don´t live there. I hardly think that any authority would be interested in that petition in my country.Would your president take care of such petition?

I think it's a good idea, or maybe not come out the pet store neutered but that the owner should do it. I think it's so irresponsible to let a pet breed when someone doesn't plan to keep it, and if already happened it's evil to throw them away like garbage. I'm putting many campaigns in my blog, if you want to check out http://ObcessedWithAnimals.blogspot.com We are their voices.
