I just got a German Shepherd and want to teach her tricks. I have had a few dogs in the past and taught them tricks but I would also like to read up a little on what I can train her, and stuff. Can anybody suggest any books that I can read to teach her some? I know I could easily take her to one of those places that train your dog but right now who has the money for that? Also I think it will take away from her and her owner time. So if anyone could recommend a site I could go to or a book that would be awesome and greatly appreciated. I checked out my local library and what an embarrassment they only had one book on german shepherds and it was torn with pages missing. :( Thank you

The cheapest way to do go about it I think is looking up Youtube videos. It's free and you can see it happening in real-time so you know what everything is suppose to look like and understand the timing. You really don't need a German Shepherd specific book, they are so smart any training book should do the trick. I am a puppy raiser for a service dog organization and the biggest tip I can give you is consistency. Do not give a dog a command you can't and aren't willing to enforce. Otherwise the dog will figure out ignoring a command is acceptable. The other big mistake a lot of pet owners make is saying a command more than once. Dogs have GREAT hearing, especially German Shepherds, so even if you don't think they heard you, they probably did. When people start saying commands over and over to get the dog to do something, the dog will learn that that they don't have to obey until the tenth...eleventh...fifteenth command and ignore you until your voice escalates. Good luck!
