My Mother's Cancer Surgery Postponed

I have been worrying and so upset the way things are going. I just don't know what to do. My Mother is 85 years old and has been battling skin cancer for many years. She was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer on her left eye. Her dermatologist did a biopsy and it was confirmed as cancer. She was scheduled for surgery on August 2nd. She received some forms in the mail to take to her primary care doctor. I thought things would be okay but I was so wrong. That appointment was on July 21 and she had an EKG and and some blood tests done. Then she went back on July 22 for another test and then we went back on July 23 for a resting stress test. The doctor's office called me the same day in the afternoon and told me that my Mother's primary care doctor could not release her for surgery till she saw a cardiologist. That appointment is tomorrow the 28th. I called the lady that is the surgery coordinator for the cancer surgery and she told me to call her back if they allow my Mother to have the surgery and I guess we can reschedule. I don't know what to do. My Mother may have a heart problem but she still has the cancer too. What can be done now if she can't have the surgery? I wonder if we can do chemotherapy or radiation or another type of surgery, maybe a local or something. Has anybody else gone through soemthing like this before?

My step-father went through that. They wouldn't let him go in for surgery on his Cancer (Bladder and Kidney), until his heart was fixed, and he is slightly younger than your mother. If she has no heart problems she should be fine for surgery, but if the doctors detect anything, they might want to work on her heart first.

Thank you for your response. My Mother went to see a cardiologist today and he said that the doctor performing the surgery has to have proof that she is healty enough for the surgery so she will have a arteriogram done tomorrow at the hospital. If they find anything wrong the doctor said they can fix it then and postpone the surgery for about 2 weeks or so. Hopefully she can have the surgery for cancer soon. Have a great upcoming weekend.

Hi sweetbabyjane, It's good to see that you have such concern for your mother and I sincerely hope that something can be done. Is it because of her heart problems that they are concerned about the surgery? I am not a doctor but I expect there is some treatment she can get. Continue to give her all your loving support. Blessings.

Thank you Pose123 for your response. My Mother had no heart problems that she knew of. The resting stress test that they did showed up abnormal. The type of surgery she is having and the doctor that is performing the surgery requires that these tests be submitted prior to surgery. Thanks again.
