How To Better Your English.....

Well friends and foes,
Why are you on mylot? Is it to earn money or to share with friends some of your ideas and other things of your own nation?
Or are you here to develop your English? If so there you are with some tips....
My suggestions: 1) If you are not strong enough to handle this language do not give it up. Go on posting and responding and doing other things as well.
2) Read others' posts or responses or comments and see how they have written. Try to follow them. If you adhere to it within a year you would be confident enough to write good English. But you should not give it up.
3) Never feel bad or inferior. Know that you are relatively weak and hence have joined this site and know that this is the best site to correct your English.
There is mylotter here from my province and he is very good now but in the beginning he was too bad in his composition. He would of course call me before posting a discussion then.
This is the better way to better your English.
Love
Rajib.

Watch the BBC, read all of the time, and listen to songs with English lyrics in them. It is not that difficult.

Those are good points for lotters who really need want to improve their English. English is not our native language but I learn how to speak and right english when I was in grade school.
I know I still need to improve some of my grammar and sentence constructions. Thanks for those advise.

I am here for everything you mentioned, money, friendship, fun, learning.
I do agree that even if you feel like you are not as good as the ones from English speaking country, you must not feel insecure because of that. As long as you can express yourself even with the few words you knew, then, it is already a good start.
In addition to what you've stated, read newspapers or any edited publications where you will be able to read perfect or less flaws grammar. It'll really help a lot. :-)

There are many ways to improve your English. It maybe spoken or written but the fact is we need to know and express flawless English, else it sounds ridiculous. No one ever wants to become ridiculous and thus we need to stay firm for not making any errors. We can correct our English by watching English movies though their English is not 100% like ours as most of theirs is American English. We can read English newspapers, novels and story books of renowned writers. We can hear English commentary during Sports and during news. We can follow other peoples while they are speaking English but we have to keep in mind that whatever other people are saying may not be 100% correct so we need to stay alert and not to imitate them. We can follow the courses of learning fluent English and our determination and dedication can help to better our English.

Very rightly said.
But one thing you know, as a baby learns to walk by try and error method, one need to speak it be it faulty. Of course among the like minded ones.
No, I too feel that no one would love to be ridiculous.

Hi krajibg
First let me reply to your q: Why am I on MyLot - I am here to make friends and participate in discussions to gain knowledge and share my views and opinions.
Now for the rest of the part -
Learning a language is never a harm instead it is a boon. I believe that any language can be mastered if one gets a chance to follow up the three principles -
1. Be in the company of people who know the language well - so that they can point out where you are wrong
2. Ability to speak the language - this is essential as if you wont speak, you would never learn to speak. I can also add up writing here but writing in a language is time consuming and may not be practically useful for all.
3. The most important - You should have a flair to learn and should shed off your inhibitions. Some people have a phobia of thinking - What would others think if I am grammatically wrong or otherwise. These things will hamper your learning process.
And lastly, If you do not have access to #1, you should be fond of reading coz this way you would get to know the grammar and syntax of the language correct.

I am an online English teacher and I have been teaching students who are learning English as a second language and I always encourage them to be confident about themselves. Most of them are hesitant but I always tell them to try and try cause later on, after a few months they are going to be good at it already.

Hi p3ks,
This is great indeed. And what you tell your students are told to my students too. By the way I am an assistant professor in English Language and Literature in a college.
Every time I go to my class I ask them to be confident about themselves. But some time I tend to lose my control and hence they get chided.

Yes, you are right. If you are keen on improving your English you have to shed off your ego and pride.
Be frank and share with others.
I am still not a perfectionist. But I do not hesitate to ask people about this or that.

Hi friend. Your suggestions are very useful and important for me. I am here on mylot because i to earn and also indirectly to improve my english. I know my english is not too much bad. But too when i see some discussions i can't get them. English is very lucid language. I love to speak it.
I was in search of my online english teacher but so far i didn't tried to find it. But you met me like a god. As you told one mylotter to send friend request to improve english. I have sent it to you. Pls approve it. And if possible whenever you'll see mistake in my discussion or comments pls let me know. I have always language barrier in communicating on mylot. You may be my future 'guru'.
But friend for two months i'll not be here because of my studies. Mylot has highly affected my studies so i don't want to spend my valuable time here until exams.
Pls if possible inform of my grammatical mistake .

hi krajibg yes this is good for all of us, from those of us who
have spoken English all our lives to all who are learning as a
second language. I know I have myself learned to write better'and I have seen so many from non English speaking countries who have really'
improved over time. Mylot gives us a place to earn and make more'
friendships from other countries, and to learn so much from other
cultures. For me its not just earning, that's just the frosting on'the cake, its a place to relax and meet new and old friends here. I am amazed at how fast so many of you who have English as your second language improve. I am sure I would not do half as well if I were
trying to learn to write in your native language. three cheers for mylot.

Hi Hatley.
Know, I am an assistant professor in English language and Literature in a college. But ironically my education from lower primary to high school it was all in my first language.
But I had a great interest for this one and have learnt to have a control over it. And now. though IO can not say for sure that I have mastered the language but can speak and write much fluently.
Thanks..

Yes, I must agree. Joining mylot is one way of improving English to those who are not really speaking English much. In the Philippines, English is our second official language so we spoke too often with this language in our daily activities. But I can say that I improve my English here.

Yes that is it. Once you are on the go. You never stop. Specially here, if somebody had made his/her mind to improve on English and never gives it up would surely learn it.

Hi,
When you use 'for' (preposition) there should be an "ing" added to the verb.
It should have been like "for improving my English."
Pls don't mind.

Hi ameenmalik.
I know there are people here round the globe and some of them are lacking in command over the language.
Me though being a college professor in English language and literature have learned a lot in my one year + stay.
This is rather a never ending process.
All the best to you.

Good topic krajibg, and absolutely true. Language is a cultural symbol and as such defines who we are. It is a part of our identity, our personality. Learning another language reflects our desire to mix, join, or share other cultures. The best way to learn another language i believe is to make that language a part of who you are. A part of one's personality. The best way to do that in my opinion is to practice the language in alls its elements. It is not enough to simply just read the language, or just speak it. We also need to write it. MyLot is a very good venue for practicing writing as there are many discussions and other opportunities for one to practice writing as well as reading the language in different levels of proficiency. The best part is that no one is judging your mistakes. Your 3 step suggestions can be very effective in helping people to enhance their writing abilities. Thanks for sharing

Very well said ptower.
Since English is not my first language I had a great love for it. And would read journals and newspapers in English without caring if or not I really understood it.
Later I started taking to myself a sort of monologue. It helped me a lot.
With my ceaseless effort I have made myself an assistant professor in English Language and Literature.
The final thing is that one should not give it up.

Hi,
Just do one thing. Try to speak in English wit the like minded ones and do talk to yourself.
Go in front of mirror and start speaking to it as if the person reflect over there were somebody else.
Try this and tell me later.
