This is my last discussion before I leave!

July 28, 2010 10:43am CST
Well it's that time again, the time of day that always drags on and on...and on and on. The last hour at work seems never ending. Only 15 minutes to go then I can leave for home :) Is it just me or does everyone watch the clock when it's nearly the end of their working day?

I watch the clock when I get towards the end of my shift at work - but only so that I can get my laptop put away before my colleague who takes over from me arrives They all know that I use it here, in between checking in guests, taking bookings and what not and no-one has any problems about me being here. My colleagues do other things like reading a book or watching the television.

Hello Mysdianait. So you use your own laptop at work, that's awesome! Some days I don't have any time to come online but most days have quiet spells where I can browse as much as I want...as long as the boss isn't around :) They say the bosses know what we do online but I've been using computers here for years and nothing has ever been said to me.

Whwn I started here (I am an hotel receptionist and alone on my shift) I was told to bring a book, knitting or whatever to do during the slack moments. There is a computer in the hall which is available for the guests and until a couple of months ago I used that. Of course every time someone wanted to use it I had to vacate it Then a colleague bought the new IPad and I asked what he would be doing with his laptop and he asked me if I wanted it. I said I would, perfectly aware that it is pratically new and he has taken good care of it. I can now be on the whole time I think that just as long as we are responsable and put work first, no-one will mind what we do in the spare time

Lucky you, while I worked at the cinema we weren't allowed to even hold our own phones in the pockets, I know two people who got fired by the boss for being told to put them phone at the locker's room many times.

Well naturally I do. lol It's a rare day when I am so wrapped up in what I'm doing that I don't notice the time. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Hello Dawnald. It's like that for me before lunch but the days usually slow down after that. It's a good thing that you're wrapped up in what you're doing because the time goes quicker. The down side is you don't get to look for funny t shirts online :)

Sorry I misread your comment, typical blonde. Yes I'm the same and it makes the day last forever but the internet is a godsend when the boss isn't around :)

I do not have a job right now but when I did I found myself looking at the clock and getting myself mentally prepared to leave for the day. When I worked as a cashier I would speed up my efforts and it only seemed to make more people come into my line. The last job I had I would take my name badge off, put my shoes back on and wait lol.

Hello SomeCowgirl. So you made extra work for yourself by trying to hurry lol :) I'm always looking at the clock after 4pm but watching it just makes time go slower. Come 5pm and I'm more than ready to grab my bag and get out of there :)

Yes but at the same time for me it seems it would be not a win win situation as if I went slow It'd be longer before I was able to leave the register, but if I worked faster I was like a bee to honey for the customers. Hmm, I recall never being able to really turn off my light until the exact moment, if not five minutes before I was to clock out.

A bit of a catch 22 for you there then. The boss used to pile the work on me during the last hour because he knew I'd get it done but he doesn't seem to do it now so maybe that's why I've noticed the last hour goes so slow.

I do, so that I can go chatting with my friends from China and Korea. I told my boss that I am learning Chinese and Korean languages and he does not oppose to me using the office connection to chat as long as it is outside office hours. Isn't he nice?

Hello Jennyze. He is a nice boss, some bosses are just too strict. That's a good cover aswell, learning Chinese and Korean. Let's hope he doesn't ask you to show him what you've been learning :)

I would if I was working unless I really enjoyed my time at work. But I know I definitely watched the clock when I was at school. $-MrDollars-$

I have always been a clock watcher, but I think it has to do more with my responsibility to have children picked up by a certain time more than anything. So over the past 20 years it has been on only very rare occasions that I was late picking them up.

Hello Beanie. Yes I suppose we all watch the clock when we have something important to do at a certain time. It's funny how time stands still though when we keep checking it :)

Hi AutumnGold, I think most people do tend to clockwatch a bit but in my job I find I really don't have time too and quite often another staff member will hurry me along and say come on its time to go but on the rare occasion where it is quiet I find times drags and I am clockwatching then. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hello Ellie. The best days at work are when we look at the clock and it's later than we thought. I don't like to wish my life away but it's noce when time goes quick and we can get home :)

Noce? That should say nice lol :)

Doing myLot while at work? That's interesting to know. Great you have access at work but to answer your question, it is just busy at work and that I always lost track of the time and before I knew it, we're off to go again. Though there are times that we encounter such situation.

Hello Sirrob. It's usually busy at work in the mornings but it gets quiet in the afternoon but I come on here whenever I can. The last hour always drags though, even if we're busy the clock seems to stop but I work at a computer so I have access to the internet to make it go quicker :)

Hi, I am one of the few people that really loves their job, so I don't really watch the clock that often, it even happens to me that I stay longer then needed just because I don't realise it's time to go home. I day it was even so bad that my boyfriend called me on the phone to ask me when I was coming home because dinner was already ready and waiting. He just called because he thought that I was working late because of clients but i was just to buzy here, no clients that I had completly forgot time. So now I started forcing myself to check the clock from time to time so that I do get home in time.

Hello Kalinka. You're lucky to do a job that you enjoy so much. I enjoy mine when we're busy but this afternoon was really quiet and the boss was hovering around so I couldn't really come on here as I'd like to just to pass the time. I don't think I've ever been late home because I've forgot the time though, I'm always ready for home at 5pm :)

Same with me. Those few minutes of the working day is the time that I dont get to do any work at all. I'd be very busy watching the time go by and waiting for the hand of the clock to reach the end of the shift. lol. I really can't help it. :(

Hello Calai. Yes the last few minutes seem like an hour each. I'm sure the clock goes backwards when no one is looking. Thankfully we've been busy today and I've hardly had tome to breathe so I'm hoping for a quiet afternoon :)

I think all most all does it and there will be no one who don't do that. When i was in school,I used to keep on watching the clock before 15 minutes to get over the last period.I used to write on a paper saying theres only 10 minute,5 minute and so on.....lets go to restaurant and have that and give it to my friend.I gets answer its OK.I was close to my friend and we used to cooperate each always. When the bell rang 2 of us will be first person to go out from the class and rush to the restaurant. This was the discussion 2 of us used to make every day before we leave.I really miss that day........
29 Jul 10
Hello Krnavtr.I miss my school days too and I miss the friends I had back then. Are you still in touch with your friend? I remember I didn't like some lessons much so I'd watch the clock for the whole lesson :)
28 Jul 10
lol I do that sometimes when I'm extremely bored. Towards the end of a college day I may keep looking at the time, flick through books while the teacher talks. What work is that? It must be so boring lol...

Hello Westbird. Yes it's good when we enjoy working with our colleagues. I'm lucky enough to work with very nice people and we all go for a drink after work on Friday. I've worked with some miserable people and that just makes the job unpleasant.
