Use adobe premiere CS3 or CS2 it requires at least 2 gb of memory for rendering your project. One problem that causes some video to run correctly during editing is the lack of memory make sure that you have enough memory even if you are just using windows movie maker.

I like Pinnacle Video Spin. It is free but you can buy extra add-ons to add more effects.
