What do you think are the pros and cons between using backpacks or duffel bags on overnight or weekend trips? I've never flown, so air-based tips are not really needed.

When I have used a duffel bag it has been heavy to carry and it has been bothersome to manage. I have preferred to travel with a backpack. Then I can put it on my back with the weight evenly distributed. It leaves my hands free for passport control or to hold bus or train tickets. With a duffel bag there isn't as much space as in a backpack that has side pocket and an optional extension at the top of it. A duffel bag usually has a zip that could break. A backpack has toggles that are very strong. A duffel bag could easily fit under the seat in front on a train or a bus. A backpack might be so large that it would have to be placed on the luggage rack at the end of the train carriage.

I've always been comfortable wearing a backpack. for me its easier to carry and my hands are still free to carry other things.

I nearly always has a camera rucksack so I'd go for some sort of bag for an overnight or weekend trips. I've got two of those small suitcases with wheels, I think they're quite good if you need only one shift of clothes and tooth brush etc. I've also got a mini suitcase, about the same size as a rucksack. If I didn't have the camera rucksack I'd go for a normal rucksack, I always did that when I was interrailing. It's convenient because you have your hands free and it is easier to carry things on your back than in one hand, don't get tired and heavy so fast.

I personally like to go with a duffel bag. I just feel that it has better space and separate compartments for your clean and dirty clothes. There are also places and spaces for things like your makeup and other personal hygiene products. I think a backpack is better for a hiking trip or a day trip. I am just not a fan of backpacks.
