Recycle, reduce and reuse, that is the message

Today I took my kids to an eco session at our local library. They were given a short lecture on recycling and then we got down to making these amazingly easy wallets made from old milk and juice cartons. I was so surprised at how easy they were to make. I know plan to make lots, decorate them and then my kids can give them as gifts to their teachers for Christmas, so I had better crack on!
Have you been wowed by something easy enough to make recently?

Hey there Pikey how ya doin'?
Hope all is well with you and the family. Yeah I should have started a discussion about coming back, maybe I will do that next haha.
I am surprised you didn't mention Tracy Island or even the coat hanger candle holder things that Blue Peter were so famous for.
Take it easy and thanks for responding

the most wow one that i came across a few years back was a woman that made skirts and waistcoats from neck ties., she only used silk ones, and the natural shape of the tie once unpicked just sews up to make a flared skirt.. they looked awesome, and all silk wonderful.. she used to go into charity shops to get the ties cheaply and obviously re cycling in style...
i am a creative person myself and love it when a light goes on in some one to become creative and your project sounds fun, maybe you could e mail instructions then the rest of us can have a go too..
enjoy your time with your children and creating
happy wishes

old school how to make rugs with rags..
most begin with having to cut your rags into long strips and then make a ball up knotting it all together., the.,
some knit or crochet using large needles of course
others plait them then sew them together
a new method (well ish ) is hooker serious i have book and still havent got around to it but will do as saving up tea shirts at the moment but if you look up rug making new and old will come to light,,
i am a knitter of the old things as using small pieces like in the days of redicut wool rugs and the canvasses remember are still posssible but the thought of chopping all the small pieces has always put me off...
using hard wearing materials like cordroy or denim means you can patch work a rug, so you can start small and let it grow as the material comes to hand so to speak.,
happy rug hunting

I'm not into crafting anything out of recycled products but it's a good thing that you are as a lot of people are into that kind of thing. I bet those wallets looked really nice.
I am into recycling though, big time. Where I live we recycle almost everything. I have a cupboard in my kitchen that things fit under and out of the way from the traffic in the room. So I keep a box under the counter for my recyclable things that I empty into a big blue bin we got from the city, with things like paper and cardboard and soup cans, that type of thing,
Then I have a another box just in front of that one that I put in my returnable items that I get money for. Like milk jugs and juice boxes and pop cans and such. We get paid pretty good for those things when we return them. I end up returning about 5 green garbage bags full every two months that I get around $30 for.
I also have a garburator in my suite so most foods that would get thrown out in the garbage gets crunched instead. I now only have half a bag of garbage every week for the garbage men to pick up and my big blue bin full of recycleables that they also pick up.

It isn't like this everywhere in Canada, only in Alberta. They should do more like us, in all countries and cities. It would sure help with garbage, that's for sure.

Hi Humbug, How are you? Long time no see :) On holidayfrom the 6th August so if you still have that flower covered car might be able to catch up with you on the roads of the SW lol. I would really know how you made them as that sounds great!!! I recycle a lot but would love to be able to make something creative from the goods instead of just taking up to the recycling centre. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi ellie333
I am good thanks, how are you? I have been really busy and found mylot was becoming a chore so I stopped for a while - a long while haha. I am sad to say that there is no point in looking out for a vehicle fitting that description as I no longer have it . I would love to show you how to make them, they are really good yet so so stupidly easy to make.
Hope all is well with you and thanks for your response

A wallet made from old milk and juice cartons sounds weird by creative. I liked hearing about the girl that made designer style purses out of the leather from car seats from the cars that sit in the junkyard and rot. You could not tell the difference and they were beautiful. She won an award for it. So keep up the recycling idea. they could get famous for some creative recycling idea like her! lol

I thought I was. My cousin had a purse made of newspapers...so I tried one and just couldn't get it right. So my daughter is visiting right now....we're going to try to make one today to see if we can work out the design. They are so cool!

Actually it's easy. You get clear Contact paper....cut out your design and line both sides of it with contact paper and sew then together. Add a handle. My sister found some on clearance but I think you could easily make handle like by braiding some material together. I have tried to tear them after the contact paper is on and it's like vinyl!!!

hi humbug oh I love the kids programs that the libraries have. I worked for 23 years in the Tustin Library on the kids side helping the children's librarian teach those craft classes and I was astounded at what could be made out of the oddest of materials. I actually learned some interesting things while watching to see that the children were all busy having fun and not being naughty.lol.

We need to pay closer attention to recycling rules. The more we take care of recycling, reducing and reusing, the better off we will be. The care we take of our planet now determines the future of this planet for us all.

Wow that's really a great thing to do.. Aside from having a bonding with your children, you get to teach them how to be responsible with the environmental. Recently, there was the very same session on the municipal gym but we just learned about it after the event. Too bad. Anyway, I can actually learn these skills on my own with just the internet at home it's just that i dont find time. maybe i need to really spend more time on stuff like those on the internet than spend time playing online games or chatting.

Making a wallet like that cool it's the first I have heard of that, but hey anything to save the planet earth right. I think that everybody needs to recycle in order for our planet to survive more we are responsible for it after all because we live here. That's why I love earth day. Awww your kids gave them as gifts to their teachers I wish I would be that nice to my teachers back then, but I wasn't. I have actually never made something like that though, but I think I will find out how to make a wallet out of old milk and juice cartons and hopefully it will turn out ok. Anyway way to go to save the planet.^^

I have never seen a wallet made out of milk and juice boxes, but I have seen a duct tape wallet and even a purse! It was neat! I'd totally love to learn how to make wallets out of recycled items. I'm currently trying to learn how to bead jewelry.

Hi ya StephanieAnnC
I think it is something really for kids as they can paint and decorate them after and they wouldn't last a really long time either I don't think but the are novel if nothing else!! I might actually make loads for my sons birthday party next year to put in the party bags!! I used to make beads from rolling strips of magazines up!
Thanks for your response

Some guys ,made a ship out of old plastic bottles and stuck them together with sugar and cashew and used it to sail across the pacific ocean. The boat was made completely out of recycled stuff.
Really Cool

Is this the new new thing in fashion?
Hmm. I remember seeing somebody post in a forum a photo of a handbag made from recycled stuff. It looks nice and classy. But I'm not sure if women will go for it.

Hi there bloggeroo
I think if it is something that you have made yourself then you will use it or wear it because it becomes a very personal item. I am not sure I would buy recycled stuff made by someone else though, depends what it was and how expensive it was I guess.
Thanks

have made dolls out of odd socks... and monsters and aliens depending on the colour of the sock., this is an old school craft but baby socks make dolls for about 6" in size not that much sewing involved, and are great for boys to make strange aliens and monsters and washerble too...
best wishes
