My husband was on a spruance class destroyer it had only about 350 men on board. And they produced 30 bags of garbage a day and it was thrown into our oceans! What a mess to put into the ocean. I wonder why they didn't have a way to burn that trash on the ship. Now that is a pollution that man can prevent some how. I wonder what the larger ships garbage is on ships that hold say 5,000 men does with their trash and how much garbage they put into the ocean! Then I think of the cruse ships does with their trash! And then people wonder why our oceans wild life are dying from consuming the trash these ships puts in the oceans! What do you think of this? Do you think we should all be writting our governments asking why they don't fix ships with a way to burn their trash?

As far as the organic (related to humans and animals and plants) waste is concerned, it's okay to throw it in the ocean. But as far as the waste that is related to Carbon products that is not recyclable is concerned, so that is something we should worry about. Besides, elements such as Mercury etc are so much dangerous for the ecosystem and wildlife whether it is in the ocean or in the jungles on earth.
Besides, there are hazardous gases that are not good for the ecosystem. So it's not just the waste thrown in the ocean.

Hi Ehsanji. I can't understand why every human in the world won't stop and look and think before we throw something away see if we can make something else out of our trash. What happened to the human race? Have we all gotten lazy? Do we not care anymore thinking everyone else is the blame? I don't like the looks of the trash on the roads! Does anyone else like the trash that is on the side of the roads?
We all have to take a stand and do something about the waste in the world! Hi Daoskillz and welcome to my lot.

Burning the rubbish made on a ship or boat certainly is not the answer.
Why pollute the air ??
Dont get me wrong I think just dumping the rubbish in the sea is completely wrong, unless it is bio-degradable waste, ie food, paper, which will not harm the oceans and wildlife.
I cant believe they can legally dump certain rubbish like plastic or metal (tins) into the sea.
If the goods are on the ship to begin with then surely there must be space to store the waste until they get back to harbour and dispose of it correctly. They cant create more rubbisg and waste than what was on the boat originally.
I am not a sea goer so I could be wrong, this is just my humble opinions.
Have a ship shape kind of day.

It is good that you re-use as much as possible, we all should be doing our own little bit to help the enviroment.
Not everything can be used more than once, like you say, but if treated and stored correctly then there is no need to pollute the oceans or the air.
We only have one planet and at the moment it certainly wont last forever.
Planning for the future is the key to everyones future life.
Have a creative day.

Hi Haddowz. It is a good thing that we all as humans should do our part to protect this planet. One person can't do it alone we all have to take responsibility for our actions. Think before we throw away things. I can't believe how many times I have seen people throw away good things they just didn't have any use for anymore. I think if people would be more responsible for their actions this world could be a better place to live. Less waste.

Hi Haddowz. Sometimes ships like this will be out to sea a long time. I guess that ships aren't willing to smell it till they get to shore. I don't know I was stating a fact about the trash that is collected by us as humans daily. I think that they should make it so things can be reused instead of throwing it any where. I am a craft person I can find a use for most things that a lot of people would just throw away. Like paper towel the paper thing that is left when the paper towels run out, you can make all kinds of decorations with it. Egg cartons can be used to make things that go around the outside of your trash cans. But when people are on a ship I don't guess they can think of craft things they are out there to protect our boarders. But why not burn the trash then it won't harm the fish but at home we as humans can stop wasting so much and put our trash to good use!

I never gave a thought to what they would do with it. That is so wrong. I think they should figure something better than that out. It looks like they could burn most of it somehow.

All the garbage all the ships together put into the oceans of the world just just a drop in the ocean. The garbage they throw contains mostly food and the sea life consumes it almost immediately. Therefore, I don't think it does much harm.

Hi Achilles. Not all of it is food some of it is the cans that they have food in and that can't be good for the ocean life to eat. Just think of all the ships that are in the ocean. Not only is it the armed forces but also cruse ships and ships owned privately. Not only does their garbage go into the oceans but also the human waste goes into the oceans. I read a discussion that was on here about dolphins dying for no reason you don't think that the trash hurts the ocean life? I do and I think they need to put a stop to it now!

Hm.
I guess it's true because it would be very difficult for people to maintain and keep garbage always. It would be quite difficult also to burn garbage all around because smoke would be harmful to the earth's atmosphere. So i guess they have no choice except to dump it in the sea. I wish we could do something about it. But i guess we can't.

Hi choybel. I think that we as humans have gotten plain lazy and think that the world will fix itself! I think the world is ran by the money we humans can produce! I think that people need to get closer to God and learn how things should be done! The right way! The way God intended things to happen! The root of all evil is the money people have to have to live these days! Heck if we as humans would find new uses for our trash there wouldn't be a lot of trash polluting Gods green earth! HE loaned this earth to us what gives us as humans the right to destroy HIS earth?

You have a good point. I thought the ships have their own garbage space for their trash. No wonder our oceans polluted. On the other hand, how they will keep their garbage for a few days until they reach the land. The only solution they can see is to throw their trash rather to keep for few days. Burning the trash I think is not also a good idea.

I totally agree with you.
Governments should create some restrictions to stop the dumping of ship trash in the oceans. It is polluting our oceans and also resulting in extinction of many rare species.
Dumping of trashes in the oceans has killed many species already, so it is the duty of the govenment as well as every person on earth to make it stop.

Hi Thunderspiders and welcome to my lot. I don't know why someone hasn't put a stop to this many years ago. And it just makes me mad to know our government keeps letting this go on. I can't stand a litter bug, it drives me mad when I see people throw trash out on the side of the road. Much less putting it in the sea's. thanks!
