Sometimes, I would like to read a book in the evening, but I feel too tired to keep on reading.
So, do you prefer reading a great book rather than watching a good film on TV/DVD? When you have time and can choose, what do you prefer to do in your free time?

I am a visual person so I prefer to watch a good film on Tv or a dvd. I will read, but cannot read for long or my eyes will get tired. So I can only read for long so I usually read a chapter a day and I have some of the classics on my iphone so I do it then as we do not have a large house or that room for many books.
But most of all, I prefer to go out for a walk.

Even when the film is interesting, I fall asleep. That is because I do not get that much sleep at night. Waking up all the time to take care of my husband. And guess what I sleep through the most interesting parts. If it were the boring parts I would not mind.

In my case, the film has to be very interesting and able to hold your attention. Otherwise, as I usually watch TV in the evening, I fall asleep. Thanks for posting.

Can I do both? lol I love both activities, but I guess I love reading more, because I spend money to keep up with my reading habits. I have a cabinet full of books, and I feel that's not enough. I do love watching a good movie or TV show though. I make it a point to go out and watch a movie with friends once in 2 months or so. I also love watching TV but only watch those that interests me like Survivor, The Amazing Race, Fringe, etc.

Sure, both activities can fill in a part of our time. I also like both, but more reading than watching TV. Most good or interesting books are very expensive nowadays, that's why I try to borrow books from the public library, but I also love reading and would like to have my own big library at home.

That's right, when you read a book, you usually have your own imagination about the places and persons explained in the novel. But in the film adapted to the story, you'll see that the person who made the adaptation has had his own imagination which might not be the same as yours. It's quite difficult.

While the TV bombards you with a sensorial experience, showing facts as they really were (or as imagined / mentally constructed by the director), books offer a conceptual description of beings and their universe. While reading we "process" the written information, so that it becomes intelligible, and so that we can relate to the characters and situations they experience. Thus, we are forced, or "invited", to perform a much more complex reasoning and mental constructions. We are, so to speak, exercising our brain while reading.

If I had the choice, I probably will pick watching a good film. However, if I'm in the process of reading a good book I would continue to read the book even if my favorite show/movie is on TV. Especially if I have not read the book before.

That's right, maybe we'll have to evaluate and to compare the book wether the film in each situation. Anyway and in my opinion, reading a book you need more concentration than watching a movie, so reading you can learn more from if the books context is good.

I would rather read a book if I am not too tired. I am an Instructor at a community college and during the semester I am too tired to read so I end up watching a lot of television and I also watch TV while I cross stitch. So I end up doing a bit of both watching TV and movies and reading books.

That's sure, as an instructor you usually have to read a lot already. The diversity is necessary and interesting too. Thanks for sharing.

I prefer to read. I love movies, and I'm even a film student, but I will insist until my dying breath that books are better than movies. There's just so much more a good book can offer. Books really ignite the imagination, stir up your creativity, and teach you more knowledge than you ever dreamed. Visual media just hands you images. I don't think it's nearly as much fun.

Reading is very important, even film students and actors have to read a lot. Good luck with your studies.

Agreed. If only I could get my fellow classmates to pick up a book for a change...

In my free time I prefer to read, but sometimes I have the same problem as you, too tired to read. So if I'm in the mood to read a book I have next to my bed but too tired to do so, I'll find a movie of the same genre as my book. that way I don't feel disappointed and still hear a familiar story. I will always choose reading over television- my imagination can be richer than a director's sometimes.

Your're right, every particular person is a whole world with his/her own imaginations, fantasy and thoughts. Even if two persons read the same book, they don't imagine the places and the persons mentioned in the story by the same way, even if the writer may explain or describe them very well... maybe that's it what makes storyies so interesting.
