A few years ago ask me anyones telephone number and if I had telephoned that person a couple of times I knew their telephone number off by heart.
Now a days though with having mobile phones and landline phones that you can key in a friends number and then when you want to ring them just press one key on the phone I never use the dial to ring them. So ask me a friends and yes I am ashamed to say any of my families number and I dont know it. I really do rely on it being stored in the phones x

We are almost on the same boat. I don't remember my relatives', friends', colleagues' telephone numbers anymore. That when my phone would malfunction and wouldn't display the owner's name, I'd often ask you that person is...It is embarrassing especially if you are talking to that person everyday."Almost" I said because there is still one set of phone number that i memorize by heart: MY HUSBAND'S!

It is the age of electrinic memory and phone nos. are kept in cell phone's book for ready use for dialing purpose as well as caller identification. Of course, keeping these numbers in a written form is very helpful in case of failure of the receiver! Thanks for this nice topic!

Hi Mallen400, nowadays we have the cellphone to keep all the important phone numbers saved safely. It's quite convenient as well after a few presses and scrolls the required number will occur instantly. Yeah, after depending on such facility my mind becomes stunted for I don't have any opportunity to dial even the numbers of the person that I contact with often.
Earlier, the time I hadn't possess any cellphone yet. I could at least remember the phone numbers of the persons whom I always kept in touch with very well. For the dialing of the same number repeatedly numerous times At the moment I could remember only certain phone numbers which are unique or with peculiar combination, or those with harmonic tone with our dialect or language
Have a nice day

I refuse to use speed dial. What happens if you don't have your cell phone and need to call your friend? Nope, I don't want to depend on anything electronic. I also rarely use a calculator, only to check my figures. Our brains are being replaced by buttons and we'll end up drooling in a corner somewhere unable to care for ourselves. Well, maybe not that bad but I really think we should use our brains more!

I have 350 phone numbers on my list and I myself have four mobile numbers. I do not remember my own numbers then how can I remember any of the other numbers. Besides, there is no need to remember them as long as you can recall that number at a press of a button.

Although that yes, we get dependent on the phone-memory-saved, there may be other reasons why we don't memorize the numbers nowadays. Most of the time we have a lot of people in our phone directory who owns their own mobiles and we contact directly. On the other hand, based on experience, we only just get the telephone numbers of friends that we really intend to call or are close with, so it's really easier to memorize them.
Personally, one other factor that I could consider why we can't memorize numbers are because most people just use their mobile phones and you contact them thru that. And most mobile phone numbers are way longer than telephone numbers, this is considering that you need to memorize the prefix of their network (if that applies) and the main number itself. Telephone numbers are commonly made up of 7 digits because of 5-9 items (or digits, for this matter) short-term capacity of most people. And because mobile phones numbers are mostly above that, then it gets harder to memorize them. Imagine having to memorize each of every person in your phone book :|
