Getting digital broadcast tv to work

We recently bought a Vizio flatscreen tv that has a built in digital broadcast tv receiver in it. We have been unable to get it to receive any signal using a digital tv antenna we purchased from Radio Shack. The wall our tv is against has the power boxes to our apartment complex on it (about 10 boxes) which I suspect is interfering with the signal. We are located in a fairly central location of a large city. What can I do to get these broadcast signals? Since we have the receiver built in do we have to use a digital antenna or can we use an older antenna? Thank you! I'm eager to get free broadcast tv!
