I am seriously considering taking a part time job as a writer. I would like to start writing articles fist. I'm more inclined to write topics on Asian culture, travel, food, and family life. I enjoy managing several blogs but that takes a lot of my time. I thought it would be good to be paid for something I love doing.
I've surfed the net for opportunities but haven't found a good one yet.

join more than one paid writing sites. and write as much as you can on each one to display your writing. post your articles on others sites, like myspace, facebook, etc, to market your articles and get more views.

Hi,
Well if you are serious about this thing I think you shouldn't waste your time looking for that 'perfect' place. You should start with sites like bukisa, wikinuts etc. The very first suggestion I would like to give is on reading.
An author always starts his career as a reader. But unlike ordinary readers who lack a definite purpose for their reading, an author will only read things that are in conformity with his purpose. Read http://www.bukisa.com/articles/341153_the-importance-of-selective-reading on selective reading. Don't waste your time in reading stuffs that are not useful. Stick to a program and read extensively.
The next thing that is of no less importance to me is to overcome writers' block. This is kind of a psychological block that is faced by almost all authors who are extremely serious about their writing. In the article http://www.bukisa.com/articles/332370_how-to-write-about-anything-and-everything there are tips on how to write about just anything. Read it, live with it. It is really necessary that you understand the fact that everything that you see around you is worth writing about. Even a teapot, or, a pen can have features that you can write about.
It is also necessary for a writer to adopt a style that will uniquely identify him. This comes from reading and reading only. You start by reading many materials. You come to know of different styles that are in vogue. Finally you choose one for your own. Read http://www.bukisa.com/articles/289511_rules-for-highly-effective-writing to get a glimpse about what I am saying. It is not always true that the author has to actually imitate a masterpiece. He can learn different styles and then after assimilating all those styles, may create one of his own.
The last but not the least is the time requirement. I think you have already understood that time is the most precious thing for a writer. He has to do extensive reading, he has to do some research, he has to sit for hours. Besides he has to look for resources, go to new places for the job. Thus we usually have a very rigid time requirement. Read http://www.bukisa.com/articles/319741_how-to-write-an-article-in-less-than-30-minutes to write articles in the least amount of time possible. It is some degree of mental organization that you need to achieve at this point. Your thoughts, no matter how profound they are, should come organized, so that you may put them down quickly.
Thanks.
God bless you

Hey ruthsm,
The best way to showcase hat you know is to start off a Blog... But as you are opposed to this try Microworkers and other freelancing sites. But I assure you this way you would waste much of your time as you would not have any portfolio to show which will make the task of finalizing a deal complicated.
So the best option as goes with me is to create a blog, write out at least 20-30 great posts and then continue with the freelance sites. This way you would have something to show to the world
Hope this helps.
Take Care

thesids,
Do you mean I need to create a blog within myLot? I already have several blogs via Blogger. It has a good traffic and following but still not earning.

Creating an online portfolio of your work is the best I can suggest for any aspiring writer. Samples of your work that demonstrate your writing skills posted in the right places like Helium will go a long way in getting you writing projects.
As a blogger and programmer, I am creating an online portfolio using blog publications. Although not the best format for showing writing samples, I'm using other web services as well.
