My 4 year old has just started to read and he's really ready to move on from his work book, but all the books I have are too advanced. What's a good book (or books) for a very new reader to try?

Do they still publish Little Golden Books? That's what I started on when I was little. The Poky Little Puppy was my favorite. There are also I Can Read books. The website that lists the specific books by skill level is here: http://www.icanread.com/. And, I agree with the mention of Dr. Seuss.

I don't know if they still have Little Golden Books, but I used to love those, too! Thanks for the link, I'll check it out . . . great resource!

In my opinion you can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss They are great ways to practice reading and reading out loud.

Does your local library have a section for picture books? I'd recommend going through that section and finding whatever you think your son will enjoy. I haven't read any picture books in awhile so I'm not sure I can recommend any good ones. (And I'm the kind of person who goes to babysit for an excuse to read children's books. ) I know some favorite classics are "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Goodnight Moon".

I live in Guatemala, so they have no public libraries here. :( Not with kids books anyway. I'll see if I can find the two that you recommended though!

I would have to say Dr. Seuss books are always a great place to start. I read all of the Dr. Seuss books to my children. I have also learned that it is better when you keep reading the same book over and over again because it helps them to retain the words that they have learned. That helped my children to be able to start reading at a young age. I also included a list of books that are easy to read and also fun. EB White: Charlotte's Web PD Eastman: Are You My Mother? Beverly Cleary: The Mouse and the Motorcycle John Reynolds Gardiner: Stone Fox EB White: Charlotte's Web PD Eastman: Are You My Mother? What a great list! I remember a bunch of these from when I was younger. My son has a little bit to go before he's ready for the likes of Charlotte's Web, but I'm definitely going to check these out. Thanks!
