Have any of you ever ran over an animal?

A couple of days ago, I had an a small dog ran out in front of me. And, I tried to avoid hitting him, and I still ended up hitting and killing him. I didn't know where his owner was or who the little animal belonged to. So, I didn't stop. I got to my boyfriend house and told him about it. We went back to the area and somebody else was moving the dog out of the roadway. But, my boyfriend's reaction to it when I told him was, that the dog should've been on a lease. Which is true, too. This is the first animal that I have hit, besides a deer. And, I was just wondering how you felt afterwards. Did you feel regretful, were you able to find it's owner, etc. On a personal level, I did feel bad about it, because when I was growing up I had two dogs of mine that were hit by cars. And with this dog, I wondered who it belonged to, but with it running around loose in town, it is hard telling who owned it. So, just give me your thoughts.
