Our first writing started with a pencil and those days were so funny as some used sharpeners and some used razor blades to make a sharp point of the lead.

I always preferred a sharp point for writing.
Slowly we jumped into ink pens and also ball pens as we grew.
Do you use pencil even now for y0our day today works or totally forgot that....??

Yes,by this time many young/elderly persons have forgotten the importance and the use of a pencil - which made me to frame this discussion to find out how many are in touch with the good pencil which made us to start our first letters.
Any how no problem, as days pass by and the necessity of these things slowly reduces.
Enjoy writing with a pen.

Hey Busybee,
Yes, I too remember using pencils for learning to write when at school. Then as I grew up, I used Ink Pens and later they were replaced with the Ball Point pens. today they are using Gel Pens...
I preferred writing with Ink Pens but now they are expensive to use and there is not much choice when you go to buy one in the stores.
However, in 2005 I was at the Military Academy invited to train 60 soldiers on Computers and its use at Offices. I found that everyone in the class, used pencils. Even I was handed a pack of White Pencils that I was to use during the training sessions. I felt re-living my school days.
So today when I write, I still use a pencil. It is something that connects me to my early school days which I miss!

Even me too I like to smell pencil, and the unique thing here is only few provide this - may be it is a special type of wood.

Yes that is correct if your work indulges in erasing and correcting this is the very useful tool.
Happy to know that you are still using a pencil.

Yes,both pencil and pen are useful items but do not know when they will be made to use .It all depends on the necessity. Some like sharp and some like blunt pencils.
Thanks for your response....

Oh,yes I love pencils. My fav is Mongol No.2, the yellow one with a perfect eraser head?! I used to draft all my articles with a pencil, make an outline with it and chapter breakdowns of my novels but now with my computer, I seldom do that. My pencils now lie in my pencil holder and I just stare at them sometimes and you know what? They bring back good memories enough to inspire me to write a good stuff!

Pencils were our colorful friends once upon a time. They had bright and eye catching colors which used to please us.Some were shorter and some longer. For me longer pencils were uneasy to write.
Any how the wide development of technology has made drastic changes in our life and day by day everything is also becoming shortened. Even English language is becoming shorter these days.
Finally after a decade or so hope only our memories will be left.

This is actually pretty interesting to think about. I use pens to write at my job, however, I do keep old-fashioned wood pencils around my house to use for certain things. I like to build things, and pencils work better for writing on wood and other materials than a pen does. I also like to use pencils for other writing tasks when I am not at work, because I can erase mistakes that I make. The only thing that I don't like about the wooden pencils for doing a lot of writing is that you have to stop to sharpen it regularly (not to mention all the trees that are cut to produce them every year), so I usually keep a few mechanical pencils around in case I want to use a pencil to do a lot of writing instead of a pen for some reason. I also keep a few of those large carpenter's pencils around for writing on lumber and things when I need them. The leads in these pencils are larger than a normal writing pencil, so they work better for writing on rough surfaces like lumber or metal...

You have well planned thoughts which are highly appreciated.Even me too - though the use of pencil is less but I have a passion to collect all varieties of pencils which are stored at a place and depending upon the work I use them.
Happy my lotting and cheers....

Yes,pencil really helps an artist and it so wonderful that it helps the artist to use it very precisely to the blunt shape of a pencil - and exclusively when you use it for shades the pointed one will not be of much use to you.
And various grades of pencil will be of great help to you so that many grades of shades can be created.

OK that is really happy to note that you are still making a friendship with pencil which brought you to this stage.
That is nice to use it occasionally depending upon our necessity and importance of work.

If I feel like drawing, nothing beats a pencil. Some times I take notes with pencils; but, I prefer a pen for note taking.

Yes,that is correct. Art can be beautified with various grades of pencil, this helps the artist to give many different shades. During our child hood we used it for several purposes. But now totally forgot or use it sometimes as you say for writing.

I much prefer writing with a pen even though it does have the disadvantage that you cannot erase your mistakes. The writing from a pen seems much sharper and clearer than the writing from a pencil. Also you usually do not have to press as hard. The paper seems somehow cleaner. Pencils are great for drawing, doing crossword or sudoku puzzles, so I have both pens and pencils at home.
