Would you do this?

I just responded to a discussion posted by another member, and it gave me the idea for another discussion that should be pretty interesting to think about. I am going to use part of my post on the other discussion to help me with this one, but since I wrote the material in the other post, the powers that be here at mylot can't can my discussion for plagiarism. LOL OK, so the discussion I responded to was called "Are you thinking of Going Back?". It talked about going back to the way things were before we had cell phones, computers, the Internet, and all the modern conveniences that we enjoy today. As I responded to this discussion, I started to think about what it would be like to be on an island alone for a while. As I stated in the discussion, I grew up in the 1980's, so I remember the days when we didn't have things like cell phones and computers, and I think that life was a lot easier back then somehow. I think it would actually be cool to be alone on an island for a few months, as long as I didn't have to worry about things like food, water, and a place to sleep. I am sure I would miss my family, friends, and my dogs, but I think it would give me a while to think about things, and maybe give me some new perspectives on life. So, here is my question for you. If you didn't have to worry about food, water, and a place to sleep, would you want to be alone on an island for a few months, or maybe even just for a month or two? Before you make your decision, I need to let you know about the requirements of you agreeing to do this. I am not talking about staying on the island in a fancy hotel room or cabin. I am talking about camping on the island, having to cook all your meals outdoors, just like you would if you were on a camping trip. Your food and water would be provided, but you would also have the option of fishing or gathering for your food when you wanted to. However, you would have no contact with people from the time you were dropped off on the island until they picked you up at the appointed time. You would have no phone or computer. You would have no way to contact the outside world, except for an emergency beacon that would bring help to you in case of an emergency. You would have all of the cooking equipment you needed to cook the way you would on a camping trip, and you would be able to sleep comfortably on a cot in a tent, but you wouldn't have any electricity at all, just a couple of flashlights to help you out when you needed to move around at night. All you could take with you would be a few books, and some notebooks and pens to keep a log of your thoughts and your trip. I will be nice here and let you also have a couple of hand-held digital recorders to aid you in keeping your logs and journals. LOL So that is the scenario. Food, water, and a place to sleep would be provided for you, but you would have no electricity, and you would have no contact with the outside world at all for the time you were there. However, this could provide an opportunity to do a lot of thinking about life, and perhaps give you some new perspective or ideals. Would you do it for at least a month? Would you do it longer? I would want to do it for at least a month...

Oh hell no!!! I wouldnt mind being all alone and having to cook for myself and not have cells or pcs, but I would NOT want to be camping. Im not the outdoorsy type at all. I would only if I could live in a house. So you wouldnt have me on your island lol.

I don't know how effective the experiment would be if the scenario offered a nice comfortable house to live in, but then again, I based my discussion partly on the fact that I grew up in the 1980's, and we had nice houses then, so I guess it would be OK to at least offer a house, but there would be no TV, computers, or phones...since not having any contact with the outside world at all was part of the challenge...

I just thought it would make it more challenging if the scenario was more of a situation where you didn't have a lot of comforts, but I didn't want to throw you into a total survival situation like Tom Hanks in CAST AWAY...

Lol, to me, being outside is being thrown into total survival!!! Im afraid of bugs to begin with, so NO WAY Id be sleeping outside haha. I could spend a whole year without tv, pc, phone, and people.......but give me some books though. If I have books to read, maybe something to write, I'll be just fine......but I need a house...oh and indoor plumbing of course

Yeah bug spray and a first aid kit would definitely be essentials...I wouldn't throw you out into a tropical paradise without some mosquito spray LOL

I think I would get very bored very quick! If I could have my husband and kids with me, and know that my bills at home are getting paid and I won't come home to any financial crisis from being gone.. then I could probably stay for a week, but after that I'd get bored and need more human interaction besides my family. If I could not bring the family I don't think I'd last a day!

Well you would definitely have to put yourself in a financial position to be able to afford to stay out there for the length of time you would choose to try for, but you would be totally alone...no connection with the outside world at all...

Wow...that's an interesting invitation..lol....I think for a week..yes...I would really enjoy it but anything past that...I don't think I would want to. I would go crazy because I am a bit of a...well....busy body. I might make some interesting sand sculptures though and probably some crazy poetry and thoughts. I suppose I would also worry myself sick over the young ones and miss the fire out of my b/f. Now if I could take them..I would do it for a year or more.

Got one room for me,Goldeneagle? I would love to sample that if it is only for a month. I don't bother much about gadgets and entertainment. I can entertain myself in a lot of ways without having to use any gadgets and all. Ex communicado, ei? Well, for a month, it is not much. I'll just take it as a holy retreat and focus my mind and heart to myself and to God (haven't done this for years already). For the longest time, it is always "they" but no "me". This is my chance.;-) It is easy to do because there'll be something I can look forward to after. And that is the thought of being reunited with the people I love.:-)

well my idea here would be to see how long you could last out there alone. I think I would offer challenges up to three months...If I could afford it, I would like to try for three months...

If the purpose of going to the island is so I or the person going their can think about himself or life then I CAN DO THAT EVEN here while I'm typing but if its about how life used to in the old days and to experience that well i can spend a few days alone so i would not mind staying their for a month but not more that that. And also I gues i would need some training on how to catch fishs. LOL

I would actually enjoy being out there for a while. I love to camp, and to be in the outdoors. I think it would be a nice vacation

that sounds exceptionally like a great idea and im ready whenever the boat leaves, and according to the flora and bugs on the island there are plenty of things to eat plus the fish along shore, grilled thumb grubs are toasty good, lets go, ive heard enough car horns to last me a lifetime.

You know...it is too bad I can't afford too buy an island somewhere and set this up as a business. I have a feeling I could make A LOT of money with this idea if I could get someone to help me finance this...

Nope, don't think that this one is meant for me. I would have said at one point in my life that I would have been willing to do something like this, but now that I'm a wife and a mother, I don't think that it would be possible for me to do. Now, I **MIGHT** be able to go for a month or two without access to the internet or to my cell phone, but even that, in my opinion would probably be a stretch at this point in my life because I've become so dependent on those two things.

I don't think I can do it. I enjoy my solitary but for a month? Definitely not me. I may do it for one week at the most without speaking to other people.
