horticulturally speaking its a fruit because fruits are defined as the edible parts of the plant which contains the seeds while vegetables are defined as the edible parts of the plant that do not contain the seeds. But why are tomatoes used with other vegetables in dishes? Why do we find them in vegetable sections in groceries?
Do you really think that Tomatoes are fruits? or Vegetables?

Technically it's a fruit. But we seldom call it fruit because we dont eat one by itself because it is not that sweet. Instead we often use it to garnish salads, sandwiches or ingredients to foods we cook.

What do you call, " beans"? A fruit, as it has seeds? No! your question lacks logic. But I consider, tomatoes as fruits and it can be eaten raw. And it is widely used in cooking as I think, due to its peculiar taste that adds taste to the dish it is added to. Let it be a fruit or vegetable, I like tomatoes and that's all.

Hi,
Botanically, a tomato is the ovary, together with its seeds, of a flowering plant. Therefore it is a fruit or, more precisely, a berry.
True fruits develop and contain seeds within the fruit (e.g. raspberries and oranges for example). Some plants have soft parts which contain the seeds and are not true fruits ("pomes" like the apple or pear, accessory fruits like the strawberry and fig). In cooking, fruits may be called vegetables because of the their use and the tomato therefore is used as a vegetable. Other botanical fruits used as vegetables include eggplants, cucumbers, and squashes such as zucchini and pumpkins. Also a bean pod is technically a fruit. The vegetable is a term used for other edible parts of plants (such as cabbage leaves, celery, and potatoes) which are not the fruit of the plant. So the tomato is the fruit of a tomato plant, but a vegetable for cooking.
A tomato is definitely a fruit. That's why it contains seeds. But most people would call it a vegetable. It's often used as vegetables are used. The term "vegetable" is a culinary term, so a tomato could be a fruit, served as a vegetable. The distinction is blurred by the labeling of "ketchup" as a vegetable when it is more properly a nutritional condiment.

Hi incus99,
Tomatoes are a fruit. I love them. I could eat them 2 or 3 times a day and sometimes I do eat them at least twice a day. I have them with a sandwich at lunch and then again with my dinner.
We are growing some in our garden this year. They are really GOOD fresh from the garden. We have some of the medium size and we are also growing cherry tomatoes.

Tomatoes are really fruits... but they taste like vegetables. I can't stand them.. I think they are a watery, seedy mess. Down here (down south), people love them. They can eat them on a sandwich by themselves. ILL!!!

An interesting question. As far as I know, there is a story why tomatoes are listed as vegetables.
In the USA in 19th century, there was a law that tax for vegetables would be higher than for fruits. But an ex-import company claimed that their tomatoes were fruits. However, after the trial, for the sake of the tax, tomatoes were listed as vegetables. From that on, tomatoes are also fruits or vegetables. ^^

Hope it should be vegetable, since we are mostly using this for cooking only, only in rare cases we are using this has fruit for juice purpose.....so the majority usage is for cooking only, hence my answer is it is VEGETABLE.
