What more to do to prevent arthritis?

My father died a year ago due to "gouty arthritis." Now, my mother is suffering a rheumatoid arthritis but with medication to prevent the attacks of such pains due to arthritis. I worry it would be hereditary! I am 36 years old, female, but my health is well at present. I just want to know more knowledge and infos what more to do to prevent such illness? At this age I started to refrain from taking foods that may cause arthritis but sometimes I can't resist...
