Do you taste food from other places, no matter how different...

from your own cooking habits?
I got the idea for this post because I read another last week about the different ways some people eat fish with respect of others. And one of the answers from my friends said that in the US, cows tongue was made into dog food. In my country cow´s tongue is a delicacy. In fact I´d eat it every day (so much I like it) if it weren´t so expensive.
I have seen snakes sold at markets in other countries (for cooking purposes).
What would you say is something you eat at your country that it would not be easily found elsewhere? What food have you tasted that you would not find in your own place? Do you eat "different" food or are you conservative? Share

I awlays to do that, and for two reasons. One is to make myself socialable to the host by accepting anything that is offered to me. That I do this idea to be nice to people and I do not to upset by rejecting what is offered so I take and eat whatever is offered to me. Sometimes, I get stomach upset after eating food that I am not fimilar with. I remember once, I was offered an Indian dish with a lot of chilli and after I went home, I drank, I think a bucket of water to cool the hot chillie in my tammy. Second, I am may a gluttonist, I can not say no to food offered to me. I always want to eat.

Probably what you should do is to try a bit of a new food at first, but don´t eat the whole saucer. Hot dishes have to be learnt to eat and the stomach has to learn to digest it.
I love hot dishes but my mother´s family comes from the north of my country where hot food is part of the everyday meal. So my grandmother cooked with hot sauces and chile many dishes and I grew to like them.

I should do that and when my body system get used to the food and then I can try and eat the food. You normnally do not that when you are invited to a house where different food is prepared and put before you. It is not a tasting game. It is food prepared for you as a courtesy or out kindness and hospitlaity of the host. It would be disrepsectful for not eating the food.

I remember when I was in college I had a Japanese dorm mate. Her parents in Japan would mail her seaweed and noodles on a weekly basis and she would make soup out of it. She asked if I wanted a bowl and I said yes. It was absolutely delicious!
Now, many, many years later in California I happened to find a Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood I was living in at the time and discovered that it made seaweed soup! I was so excited! I like to go there regularly to order my huge bowl of seaweed soup!

I'm pretty conservative, but I am willing to try different foods - to a point
I tried sushi, didn't like it; tried caviar, didn't like that either...
I do like venison, rabbit, buffalo and I grew up eating lamb - something down here in the south, can be hard to find - all those sheep hating "cowboys" I guess...

Lamb is expensive here too
like beef, mostly the castrated males are killed, the females are kept for breeding and wool - even some of the males are kept for wool because their breed is more valuable for wool than meat
I'm not real fond of salmon, and while I can get fresh fish, I'm just as happy with it cooked...

I like lamb a lot too but it is very expensive for me. I can only buy it once in a while. I do like sushi though and I learned how to make it myself. We have good fish in our country and salmon is not so expensive so I can do it once in a while. I wouldn´t eat it often though.

we get tongue here too. it is usually sold as a sliced sandwich meat. when i ate meat i quite liked it and can't see how it is any more revolting than any other meat. anyway there are plenty of foods sold here that are not sold elsewhere and might well turn some stomachs. black pudding, haggis, brains used to be sold as a potted meat - don't know if they still are, then you have brilliant things like deep fried pizza. which is truly disgusting. anyway if i am travelling i usually eat what is available, although some things might make me squeamish.

I love brains. But it is difficult to find nowadays. What is black pudding and haggis? I doný think I would try the deep fried pizza though.
Take care!

I like blood sausage very much. Here we just boil it to heat it and put some boiled potatoes on the side. It´s one of those dishes you make when you don´t want to spend much time at the kitchen. In my family there are those who love it and those who won´t eat it, nothing in between . I have eated cow´s hearts in "anticuchos", a peruvian wonderful dish. I also like sausages of many kinds although I take care of buying the best (usually the more expensive too)
I would not be seen near those pizzas though. We don´t have them here and I hope we don´t get them.

black pudding is basically a blood sausage. haggis is a bit like a sausage too, except a different shape. consists of the kinds of things that go into sausages (hearts etc) minced up with oatmeal etc and cooked in a sheep's stomach lining. well effectively it is a round sausage.
deep fried pizza is beautifully horrible. i have eaten it and it is revolting. the pizza dough soaks up the fat and it comes out dripping. not recommended.

I enjoy trying different foods and different preparations from various countries. I do not try anything untoward or too unusual. The most unusual foods I eat are liver, kidneys, and gizzards. My children do not approve.

Why don´t your children aprove of your eating different foods? It´s not as if they were poison. Some people eat them and some people don´t. It´s more a cultural thing, I guess.

Different cultures have different recipies and if you are a lover of food then in my opinion you should try out things that you can. The limitations come because of several reasons -
1. Fact you are a vegetarian - you cannot realize the taste of nicely prepared non-vegetarian items.
2. Religion - Several religions forbid eating specific food and this way you miss out on these
3. Ingredients availability - This is the major problem and hurdle no matter what kind of eater you are.
Even if these constraints apply, if you are a food lover, you can still try out dishes that you can eat. I have tried several ones and am happy that I have liked them mostly.

For me it is also very difficult to get ingredients from your country, even though I live in the capital. I hope this changes as mylot has provided me with several indian friends that explain me about wonderful food that you have.

Welcome to mylot, thesids and thank you for your answer. Your answer is positive and your explanation of some of the reasons why people don´t eat other food is so true.
Many times I want to make a dish from elsewhere and it´s difficult or imposible to find all the ingredients.
Have a nice day!

thanks marguicha for the kind appreciation. I can understand the biggest hurdle in cooking is not finding the right ingredients and that too at affordable prices. Maybe coz I come from a still developing place but this is the main issue here and as you point out.

I agree with you, Dawn. I would not like to eat a moving animal. Ooops, wrong! Oysters are alive when I eat them and I like them. But then, they don´t look SO much like an animal.

I am willing to taste new foods but there are certain things that I will certainly pass on like tongue (LOL)! Snails are another dish I would not touch, along with liver, brains, rabbit, oysters and tripe to name a few. I don’t mind new recipes but some foods can be a real problem for me. I guess you could say I am conservative with my meals!

Hi friend,
I can see you are very conservative with your meals. It seems that you are willing to try only new food that belongs to your culture.
As for me, I have tried all of the no-no foods you mentioned and it seems all of them are among my favorites. But I have tried a couple of times ostrich brought from Australia and I did not like the taste of it although I can eat it if needed. I would not buy it as it is very expensive but I wouldn´t buy it either if I had the money.
Happy posting!

Hi ank,
Did you like the new food you tried in Kuwait? Do you prefer more spicy foods or you also liked food that was less spicy than what you are acostumed to eat? I will have to check on the bread you are telling us about. I don´t know any of them.
Take care!

I was just commenting that to an indian friend if you scroll back on the discusion. So many times we don´t cook or taste other country´s foods because we don´t have the ingradients or don´t know how to use them. I still remember the shock I had when I first tasted wasabi in sushi. Now I love it.

Sometimes you eat something new and you don´t like it. But you will never know unless you try it. That´s what I have told my grandchildren since they were little and they are not picky.
I do realise though that some people have religion reasons for not eating something. I respect that.

We only live here on earth once. That is why I'll try anything as long as edible. Frog's legs is on top of the list, next is snake which by the is known to be an aphrodisiac. Bugs is also good, I wish i could eat ants but you'll need more than a cupful before you'll realize that it has a bitter taste.

I don´t think I´d eat ants but I´m sure snakes must be good. They have been eaten for centuries.
I have tried frog´s legs but I prefer chicken as they are similar.

I see that you are interestested in cooking, besides eating. So am I. I suppose that an interest in cooking makes us want to try different food, as long as it doesn´t go against our principles ( I´m taslking about religion restrictions that some people have).

I've always said I'll try anything once. I've seen cow's tongue in the grocery store but never had the desire to bring one home to cook. That's probably because it looks so much like a tongue!
I can eat beef liver and chicken gizzards but the liver is already cut up and the gizzards, well, they just don't look like anything I've seen on a human or other animal. I guess what I'm saying is that if I can recognize it, I don't want to eat it.
I've tried frog's legs and octopus, both in a Chinese restaurant. I wasn't too keen on trying them because they looked like what they were but I thought I'd give them a chance. The frog's legs taste very much like chicken so, if I want that taste, I'll eat chicken. The octopus, well, it was just creepy. Very chewy and tough. I'll stick to shrimp, crabs and scallops.
I had a boyfriend, way back in my teen years, who was a bad boy and got sent to a juvenile detention center for 4 years. He told me that, when he got out, he would ask me one question and, if I said yes, he'd take me to Oklahoma (where he came from) and teach me to cook rattlesnakes. Now, I'm sure rattlesnakes taste just fine but they're not something I'd order or bring home to cook. (BTW, he did call me 4 years later but didn't ask me that question, thankfully. I had another boyfriend by then and didn't want to learn how to cook rattlesnakes.)
If it's not something that bites back, like hot, spicy food, I'll try it at least once. Well, maybe not dog. I love dogs... as pets, not on my dinnerplate!

Maybe you missed a lot by not eating rattlesnakes. I have eaten frog´s legs but I prefer chicken any day. But I love octopus either with a blue olive sauce as they make it in peruvian cooking or with a hot sauce with lots of red chile. But when I make octopus I cook it so it´s not tough or chewy. I think the octopus you tried was not well cooked.
I don´t like liver much, unless it´s fried with lots of garlic and a very hot skillet so it´s seared in the outside but tender inside.
As for the tongue, it´s not easy to cook unless you know how. I use a pressure cooker because it is very tough. If you don´t cook it just right it would be as bad as your octopus experience.I´ve never eaten dogs, although I know they are eaten in some countries as well as cats. But I have eaten rabbits and hares and fortunatly don´t think of them as bunnies while I´m eating them.
Take care, friend!

I would like to taste other country's food. I was watching this movie last week and IO got interested in Chinese street food. They had scorpions on barbeque and other stuff in there but I am not sure if they ever taste good. I also got interested in one of the food they have in Korea and its eating a live octopus.

I love octopus but I have never eaten it alive. It is very tough so O cannot imagine how anyone would eat it alive unless he had very strong teeth..
I love chinese food, but I guess it is a chinese food made for western palates. I hadn´t heard of scorpions.

I'd really like to taste different foods especially if it is from other country because they say foods speaks the character of the people living in that country. However, there are foods here in the Philippines that is very hard for me to taste these are "exotic foods". My parents have eaten snakes, frogs, tree worm, and crickets. I have never tasted these because I don't like to.
In the other way, I like to eat different cuisine from Thailand, South Korea, Chinese and Japanese foods.
