what's the meaning of neighbor?

nowadays,people living next doors even don't know each other. this is a common phenomenon in my hometown, i don't know whether people in the other places have the same situation? how do you think about this problem? in my mind, i think neighbors should often visit each other and have a talk with each other, but now, it is really out of my expectation...
