Late night snack?

I plan on going to bed within the next few hours, but my stomach is getting rather persistent in its demand for food. I have been told that it is not good to eat so close to bed time, but I have also been told that I should not refuse myself food when I am hungry because I will end up eating more than I should at the next meal. What should I eat?

If you have the urge to snack, I always try to snack on something at least somewhat healthy rather than going straight to junk food. I like to keep grapes or carrots in the house for those in-between meal belly grumbles or, like you, late at night. In fact, I just finished a few grapes myself. :) It's not something that fills you up completely, but it always tides me over until the morning at the very least.

Hi phirre, Very well deserved BR for such a nice explanation over the in between takes. Its the problem for many parents tat are indirectly leading their children more towards junk food and finally would have to an unwelcomed guests in the hospitals. Eating something make both senses. At as you are hungry though you are not to be filled up nor you are not, so why not take up something this or that until we are ready for the final trip. Nice,,,

I drink hot choco if I get hunger pangs before going to bed. But most of the time, I just drink water. Snacking at night is just going to condition my stomach to expect food at night so I don't really like doing it. Anyway, most of the time, I know that I'm not really hungry. It is just reflex or conditioning that makes me think that I'm hungry and I need to eat at night before bedtime. So, I'm consciously fighting the urge and just allow myself a drink of water. Hmm. Actually, even if I don't get hungry, I still drink water before going to bed.

Hi Valenas, I don't want my sweet dream to be disturbed by the visit to toilet in the middle of the night, I have stop taking snack after ten in the night. I'm used to drink lots of drink after taking food. At the moment I just take a cup of dilute milk with a teaspoon of honey stirred with it. I still had a bit hungry the first few nights but later on I’m used to it. I don’t have the hungry feeling gradually as before anymore after taking honey milk for some days. I’m happy now that I don’t have to depend on supper before sleeping as well as no night pee to disturb my sleep too Happy posting

I eat dinner early and am usually pretty hungry by time I go to bed. Or in the middle of the night. I eat peanut butter on whole wheat toast, or some saltines, or some almonds. It helps me not to be as hungry when I wake up, too.

Oh I hate late night cravings!! I used to just open the fridge and just grab whatever's up front. But not anymore! Hehehehehe. When you're craving for something, before you actually eat, drink water first. Sometimes, we're just thirsty and our brain interpret that as hunger. Then sit for five minutes - and if you're really hungry - grab a fruit. Banana, small apple, etc. The higher the fiber content -the longer you'll feel full. So for dinner, eat high fiber foods! Enjoy!

I think you really have some problem about eating habit, first you need to do is consult a dietitian/food nutritionist because they are the one who knows a lot about eating the food at the right time. You can also try to do the same thing I have watch in the talk show its like one of their guest have this kind of way of eating to prevent from getting fat and getting hungry always. Its like this eat healthy food enough to satisfy your stomach but not full and do it every 3 hrs, example you eat 3 cups of rice with veggies in lunch and dinner and for break fast you also eat about 2 cups of rice, so to change it you need to eat in break fast a 1 cup of rice then after 3 hrs eat again like bread or other healthy food then do it after 3 hrs again and again. This might help you not to get hungry every time but not getting full at night. just like what they say its really not good to eat and get full at bed time I think its because during the night time our body are detoxifying so normally every morning we should go to the comport room to poo of pee to release the toxic in our body. I do that every morning I guess I have nice working body part inside of me.

Compromise, don't have a large meal, have something possibly healthy that you know will tide you over enough for bed. Just be sure to have a decent breakfast to kick start your metabolism in the morning.

Hello valenas, well it happens with me too sometimes. But as i don't keep extra stuff at a hands reach it becomes a big bore to go get them at some peak. But for you i can say if you feel midnight hunger, you should try to have a warm cup of milk, this will sooth and relax your senses and get you to bed with slightly filling your urge to eat, or you can try a handful of peanuts, or half apple, but no cookies, chocolates and such stuffs.

Hi Vaenas, I think it depends on what you eat late at night when you have the need to eat something because you are truly hunger. When you eat some heavy foods like carbohydrates, it is not good because the food will spike your blood sugar and put a strain on your body's organs and it will be hard to digest it. Whenever I am up late nights and craving some kind of snack, I look for something in the protein line of foods, these foods will not be really a bad choice. I keep boiled eggs ready for just such an occasion of late night nibbling. Fruit is another rescurer, I usually grab an apple. You will be satisfied with an apple and a boiled egg if you like eggs. You must quench your hungry or else you will definitely overeat at your next meal, and you will probably eat all the wrong kinds of food. All you want is to fill up your stomach. So, if not eggs and apples, just have some safe foods, protein, fruits, Jello, etc., on hand for your late night cravings. Good Luck

Eat a fruit, sweet and healthy. I do not know how big your appetite is but usually one fruit is enough for me has late night snack. Hope I helped and what else can I say if not "good appetite" and "good night, sleep tight".

I usually will get a couple yogurts with fruit or some fresh fruit for a bedtime snack. I have the same problem. I get hungry at night right around bedtime and I have stomach problems so don't want to eat something too heavy on my stomach. That is why I get yogurts or fruit.

It is not good to eat heavy meals 3 hours before bedtime. However, you can eat small meals like cereal, buiscuits etc. If you're really hungry. Try to eat small amount of food and slowly. Remember that your stomach is supposed to be resting while you rest.
