Have you ever discovered that you have been misspelling something for years?

I recently discovered that definitely is not spelled definetly like I always thought it was. I got really embarrassed, because grammar and spelling is kind of important to me, so I realized that I must have misspelled this particular word (which should actually be pretty easy to spell) so many times over the years.
Has this ever happened to you? (Mispronouncing something for a long time counts too, it doesn't have to be in writing!)

When I was in grade school I spelled 'aunt' as ant, I was told I needed a 'u' in it so I spelled it 'ANUT'... I don't remember when I learned to reverse that U!!!

Yes it did happens and sometimes I can understand too how embarrassing it can be infront of people who looks and see only grammar when they talk to you so this is wrong sometimes. However, we learn everyday and I am happy to learn them no matter if it is late.

Oh, this happened to me too with some stuff. Usually not with spelling, but I was recently debating the name of the capital in Kazakhstan, it turned out they had changed it since I went to school, so I lost that debate as well.
Oh well, these things happen to all of us! Nothing to feel bad about!

Yes, I know. It is just strange that it took me so long to notice! I guess I just need to become more attentive to these things.
Thanks for your reply, by the way!

Yes i have also felt the same. But the advantage here is that it's hard for people to misspell here. Because there is Auto correct which automatically points us the errors and the chance to correct them but one cannot check the grammar here.
Although while speaking i make it a point to speak carefully and also pronounce as good as i can. Typing is easy and very difficult to make mistakes if you are a regular but speaking and pronunciation along with grammar can be very difficult.

That is true, that's actually a really good feature, and probably how people notice that they are misspelling things in the first place!

A lot of people spell 'definitely' wrong. I see it as 'definately' a lot too and a whole variety of spellings. I used to spell 'across' wrong, I would put two 'c's in it, so it was 'accross' though I've no idea why!
