Burnt my fingers, truly == when trying to help wife in cooking.

India
August 4, 2010 3:10am CST
It has not been comfortable. I have my fingers burnt .... medically called scalding, when I touched a hot plate..... in the kitchen. the three fingers of the right hand, ... very painful for over 3 hours. (But, lucky, I read in homeo medicines, that CANTHARIS is a medicine, which relieves the pain and controls the damage surrounding the burnt tissue_) ----------------- so, I have learnt two things.. 1. NOT TO HELP WIFE anymore. 2. Not to take the pressure of emails and mylot seriously as deadlines. ---------------------------------------- I have been a wonderful cook, in my good old bachelor days. BUT now... .. it is all because of my wife! ... she has pampered me to comforts. did you ever burn or scald your fingers. ?

I haven't burnt my fingers like this... In your circumstance, it's very fun to help ur partner in cooking.. But burning once, u should not take the decision of skipping the assistance to ur partner..

Hi consultrainer, Yes I too had burnt my fingers many times, but never seriously when It happens I go to sink and put It on cold water It really helps. Do not blame your wife in your mistake. I do not care for burnts, because If It happens It is my negligence mistake. I love cooking very much I always enjoy this process and I am always happy to try new things. Do not throw your cooking in the brush, but keep trying your cooking. Take care, Have a nice day!

Hi consult, First time you burnt your fingers eh? Let your wife kiss and pamper you, that will work much better than any medicine. Members here are coming after you because you haven't been showing up, we didn't know you are busy meddling with the hot plates

Of course!! It happens to anyone who does enter the kitchen on a daily basis (and most often to people who enter the kitchen once a year:P). In fact, at the moment I am sporting a little spot on my right arm where I burned it a few days back. Now you know why I prefer not having my husband enter the kitchen (though we have an open kitchen). He has never cooked...and I don't think 10 years after marriage is the time to start. He can't even make a cup of good tea and would wait for me to make a second cup WHENEVER he has chosen to make his own...or wait for me to walk in the door (when I was working) to ask for his cup of tea.

Ha ha...you naughty man!! Well, I don't refuse things in the other room...so we do not need to use the kitchen ;) And like I mentioned, we have an open kitchen...so privacy there is out of the question! Yes, I do wear sleeveless but I was wearing a short sleeve when I was burnt.

Btw, did you burn yourself trying to be naughty?
• India
15 Aug 10
well, thankyou for the information. and, I am sorry to learn that you got a burn on the right arm... do you wear sleeveless? .... i hope Kitchen is one great place for the male to catch the female, unawares, ... when the kids are not around, ... and do all those things, which she refuses in the other room. .... because she will be so busy, with her hands full busy, and with a burning stove nearby, .. she just cannot refuse or escape. [b]like, asking for more pocket money, ... etc? .. what else did you think? :P

consultrainer, I never quite like taking over or helping out half way which can be quite accident prone like yours. Normally, if I have to cook I will usually do it from start to the finish especially if I need to use the oven. When a dish is sitting, it is very dangerous to those around the kitchen because the plate or pan is extremely hot. I have seen people getting scalded like you so I will never touch them when I am helping. Hope that your scalded fingers will recover soon and that you will be more careful in the future. Have a nice day.

Oh wow...do you still follow the 'stay away from kitchen days'(and bedroom too?????) now??? I wish I were as lucky. With me being the sole woman in this house...I'm tired of picking after all '3' boys!! Even my well-mannered helpful older one has decided to take after daddy (obviously, the easier way out!)...and hate the nagging I have to do (which does not even serve the purpose)

lols. thanks sky. But, I was only trying to fry a few pappads .. to add to the sambar dish, that my wife prepared for the lunch. .. I am NOT so particular about cooking these days, as my elder son caught up with that, when it is not possible for my wife to do. YOU know, our tradition forces us to put the woman away from kitchen and bedroom, for three days a month. I recovered a lot. thanks for the blessings and bestwishes.

Hi consult, I have several burning marks in my hands and it is not new for me. I am careless in kitchen. Applying toothpaste in the burning area immediately, will help in a great way, there won’t be even a mark but in my case I am not caring that much, I may delayed to apply the paste. Be careful in next time.

sreekala, thanks for the tip of using toothpaste. ... the one without SALT or pepper-mint in that! ... vandana would feel happy to read, if I applied the minted toothpaste. .. it is like rubbing salt to the injury! ..... and, sagar, you are wonderful . HONEY also helps a lot in healing the scar, but, .. should not be applied immediately of the scald/burn ... as it blocks the temperature, causing more damage. Iced water is better always. And, HOMOEO medicine Cantharis is proven to be perfect.

If you cook you will sooner or later burn your fingers or cut them. It's just part of the job risks. I'd say you wife has spoiled you, but I'll bet you can still wash up the dishes. We keep an Aloe plant in our kitchen for burns.

I have learned two things from your discussion CT; 1. Not to make a fool out of myself near my wife, being careless enough to touch the hot plates bare hand! 2. That Cantharis would help with this. How would it feel if you put your fingers on ice after getting burned?

Circular saw - Circular saw from Screwfix
I still a good cook. But my partner has an allergy to storing crockery,(like her breakfast dishes when alone, coffee cups etc) so I will not use the kitchen until it's clear. The only burning of fingers in recent years has only been of a financial manner- although a few summers ago I nearly put a circular saw through my right hand.

Gravity feed slicer - Gravity feed slicer for delicatessen
I slipped while slicing some decking- the wood snapped back and took out a chunk! This has triggered another memory from my retail days. I once caught a member of deli staff using a gravity feed slicer without the guard on....

I have. The elements on our stove stay hot for a while, and also when I take a frying pan out of the oven, i sometimes forget to hold it with the pot holder and ouch! I never got seriously burnt but I sure had to run a lot of cold water to tone down the heat. Yes your wife has spoiled you, so my advice is always have the pot holder handy and make sure there is plenty of cold water.
• India
5 Aug 10
oh. lols about the cold water. PREVENTION is better than cure. so, friend... I WOULD not take your advice. I would rather ask my wife to handle the issue of cooking. and, as admitted, I am not good at helping. or acting. lols... thanks.

Hi, consultrainer. I hope that your fingers feel so much more better soon. I have burned my fingers a few times when I have been cooking. Especially when I open up the oven. It is not a nice feeling. It is very painful. It was nice that you helped your wife with cooking. I am very sorry about your fingers being burnt.

I was a profesional cook/chef/catering assistant for 20 years...and yes I have burnt my fingers/hands/arms many times! but nothing severe just only minor things...except once I scalded my hand [really bad] with hot water...but I managed to finish my shift[in tears]mind you it was that painful!...after that I learnt to look after myself and work safe...not just for me but for my fellow workers as well.

lucky for you to escape with minor burns and injuries. .. Do your kitchens have any good REAL first aid? .. please try to carry a cantharis ointment, .. to be on the safe side. It is not harmful, if accidentally ingested.

In your case you truly 'burnt your fingers' a saying that says that you went where you should not have. It is not a big deal for us poor women to get our fingers scalded as that is part of our destiny but in the case of men it deserves to be noted and made a fuss of!!
• India
4 Aug 10
dear allknowing. that is the reason, why I added the TRULY word in the headline. .. I should have just did the routine stuff ... of asking her to get me that dish, instead of myself going in and spoiling the entire kitchen... she says, I WILL always destroy the neatness and comfort of her cozy kitchen, .. (actually it is roach-infested... i tease her back!)_ ... thanks for easing my burning.

The cat is out of the bag really! So you did not help her but merely went to pick up your food - some help this I say! And that too you could no do properly. Poor men! . When we women are into baking, roasting, steaming, cooking and what not you could not even serve yourself without scalding your fingers!! Do I say more?
