How do i start a rock collection for Geology ?

First of all could i buy the rocks or do i actually have to find them if i could buy them i leave near dc area where how could i learn about rocks in particular if i find a rock is there a way i could tell what rock i have or books i could read rather then just ask someone in a university then just ask someone in a university then just ask someone in a university

It is more fun when you find the rocks yourself, but there are a lot of shops and webpages that sell rock samples. A shop in a museum of natural history could be a good starting point to buy some.
There are plenty of books about geology and minearology. Ask at your local library, and I'm sure they will be happy to help you find one that is suited to your local environment.
