I drink a lot of water when I get hiccups. Well that is what people told to do so when I get one. I think it does not work at times. What do you do?

i also drink water. but yeah,it doesn't work all the time. sometimes when i get hiccups, i hold my breath and they go away.i read somewhere that doing headstands get rid of hiccups. i don't know about this though, it sounds ridiculous. i don't know how to do a headstand so i'm never gonna prove that one wrong.

I tried holding my breath before. It fails sometimes, I really don't know how long it should be. The headstand - haha. I'm not so sure bout that. I dunno how to do it too, but I won't even try doing it.

I hate hiccups! They make me uncomfortable and tire me out... Usually I will hold my breath for a minute and it usually makes it go away, or I get a big drink of water and that makes it completely go away.

It seems like holding breath and drinking a lot of water works for a lot of people.

What works for me is to hold my breath and take a drink of water. It works everytime.

I have read that hiccups are actually a modified form of respiration. Usually our body tends to normalize the oxygen level in our body if there is to much. Usually its the nervous system that does the control and tends to make a hiccup. This will eventually will alter our breathing and thus lessen the oxygen in our blood. There seems to be a good rationale in holding our breath if we want hiccups to stop.. considering that when we hold our breath, it will lower our oxygen intake. Drinking water is another option considering that when we drink, we also hold our breath. Well, breathing into a paper bag may seem to work also considering that you take in expired air. Lastly, some people say that by giving that person a good scare will also tend to cure hiccup. But obviously hiccup is not a life threatening problem. The only thing is that it is quite irritating.

Wow! I never knew those facts at all. I just think hiccups are something irregular with your body. So it does have something to do with too much oxygen in the body. So I guess holding your breath will really work, I just don't get how long. Maybe it doesn't work for me sometimes because I still have a lot of oxygen. Thanks for the amazing facts.

ohh, LOL. I think that's awkward especially when a lot of people looks at you. It's nice that holding your breath somehow works for you. I do it sometimes, but it does not work at all times.

I used to drink a lot of water whenever I get the hiccups. But I don't now. What I do is I just take hold my breath. I'm not sure if this is bad or something, but it really works, well for me, I don't know if it will for you. Anyway, so that's what I do. And I get rid of the hiccups.

I actually do both. But sometimes it does not work at all. I hold my breath for seconds, I actually count the seconds, but sometimes, it does not work. It's nice that it actually works for you.

I really find it bothering when I get hiccups because mine are so loud, hehe. Well I drink lots of waters but sometimes they aren't effective. A friend told me that you have to shock a person, to the point that he could jump, lols... :D

Hiccups can be a real pain to deal with a lot of the times. Especially when they come at the worst times in the world. Therefore, it is hard to deal with them. Water does work for me nine times out of ten. However, there is just some times where it does not work as well. There are particularly annoying cases of hiccups that last way too long, even not how much you drink. Having someone sneak up on you and scare you is something that people say to work but I disagree, considering if you are expecting someone, how can they surprise you. Taking deep breaths can work, contrary to the popular belief of holding your breath. That actually does make it worse for me. Still hiccups are a right pain. I really dislike them when they occur. They are a real pain to say the least.

Here I give you some home remedies for hiccups: 1) One of the most effective home remedy for hiccup is to eat a spoonful of peanut butter. 2) Gargling with water too is effective. 3) Suck a tablespoon of sugar slowly for a quick relief. 4) Divert your mind; think about something else. 5) Add two teaspoons of common salt to a cup of plain yogurt and eat it slowly. 6) Take half teaspoons of cardamom powder in two cups of warm water. Sieve it and drink glassful. 7) Suck little piece of crushed ice.

Hi,trishasantos! I still remember a very funny thing. Before I went to college,my father used to scare me suddenly when I got hiccups. It is said that being shocked suddenly will help stop the hiccups. And it did work. And then finally,I got used to it.So whenever I got hiccups,I just called "Dad" and then it would stop.It worked every time.Very interesting, huh? But after I went to college,it didn't work any more. And I try to hold my breath and then count numbers so that I can forget the hiccups. But it doesn't work every time.hehe. Have a nice day!

It depends you need to have a new technique each time, sometime i just end up walking outside and getting some fresh air, sometimes drinking water works, but most of the time, i prefer to concentrate on something else other then my hiccups...

hmmm sems like you got a few techniques. I don't have one, well, one that actually works. I just let it be sometimes, and well it just stops. I think that's good.
