This spring we discovered a beautiful stray cat, but we couldn't get near her although the grandkids had no problem. After I had fed her a few times she finally allowed me to pet her, although picked up is not tolerated. I knew she had kittens somewhere but couldn't find them, then one day my husband located them when he was mowing. They were large enough that they were running around but wild and would come nowhere near us although by then "mom" had become very friendly. She had them 'homed' in a fence row but eventually moved them to the barn. I would carry food out to them and talk to them but they would run away. Then as they got bigger, I quit carring the food to the barn and made them come to the patio to eat. They had no problem as long as no human was on the patio. Lately they have made it to the upstairs deck. Apparently 'mom' has quit letting them nurse, they are much bigger now, but they know where that food dish is. I have been giving them food on the deck now and they don't run anymore but move away although the distance is getting less. THis morning I filled their dish and they came right up and ate and while they were eating I petted both of them, the little yellow boy ran away but the food won out and he came back and I petted each of them for a few minutes!! I really thought that I would never pet them but finally I have won!!! Have you ever tamed the wild ones?

I have never had any dealings w/any kind of cats. We never had cats when i was growing up, my mother hated cats for some reason. I'm glad u have made friends w/them. They are lucky they came to your house.

My father hated cats and if it had been up to him we would never have had any. I have always been a cat lover.
I had a pastor that absolutely hated cats and it passed from him to his daughter and granddaughter. Strange what we inherit from our parents isn't it?
Thanks for your response.

no, but I'm living with 6 - in the house
you are right - the stomach wins every time
Now, I have had a few I thought were wild (feral) but after I did get my hands on them, they were over that stuff and ready for all the pets I could dish out!
if we didn't free feed, we'd probably make more progress with the ferals

I had one feral cat that if I fed him cheese I could pet him! BUt only while he had the cheese to eat. Once the cheese was gone so was he. Never did tame him!
We have one I call 'old tom', if you have read other post you have read about him. He was abandoned by his family when they moved and he made it to our house. He ws 'scared' and we fed him but he would run, then one day while he was eating my husband petted him and he is a big lover and fighter. He chases all the other stryas away!
Thanks for your response.

I am not a dog person and I have come to the conclusion that God knows this and it is ok with him. I never get stray dogs but I get lots of stray cats. I tell people "God knows where to send them when they need food and love"...I too am know as "the cat lady" one of my grandchildren even called me the 'cat grandma'!!!!!
Now in addition to the cats, we have 4 baby domestic rabbits. They are so adorable! Also have 2 full grown 'boys' (they were neutered!)
Thanks so much for replying!!!
