Well I was happy and excited until.....

I have been out of work now for 11 months. I am not finding any jobs that are not at minimum wage level or just above. My husband is unable to work and completely denied Social Security benefits. I have no idea when my Unemployment will run out. So Friday while 'playing around' on the internet I came across schooling for medical billing and transcriptions. I really think that with good training I could do this so I inquired and on Saturday a recruiter called and talked to me and asked when I wanted to start. I said "NOW" and he said it would take some work but we could get it done. I am/was so excited! My husband is upset with me so we are not talking about this. My oldest daughter said 'mom, do you know what you have to learn for that?'....I had a friend tell me I was to old I should be thinking about retiring. (I am .. I have at least 6 years to go before early retirement!) Although I have also had a few friends tell me 'good for you' and 'that is wonderful' I am still 'disappointed' with the negative that I am getting. This is an 'online' university that I signed up with. My youngest daughter thinks I should check things out more instead of just jumping in. So what are your thoughts? Am I being my 'dumb blonde over 50' self or have I maybe made the right move forward?

I really admire any one that wants to go to school at your age. Some times if we do too much research we chicken out. You can do it. So many times our family and close friends don't know us as well as they think they do. we do have an inner strength to draw on. So you go girl.

Yep that is me. I didn't take Algebra in school, other then what was in my general math classes, then my senior year I had to take another class and the only class open was a BUSINESS MATH class!!!! Would you believe the second semester I got straight A's!!!!! Trust me that was the teacher!!!!!
I just had another friend here for a couple hours. I haven't seen her in along time and just a 'miracle' that she droped in. But she was the miracle that I needed! We talked for a long time. She and her husband are both college graduates and they put all 3 of their girls through college!!!!! She thinks I should go for it!!!!! Even with the obstacles that I have she thinks I will do fine. We use to go to the same church and did a lot of 'work' together and she thinks I will do just fine!!!!! So now I am 'UP' again!!!!!

Glad you finally got in touch with your friend. Any math other than adding, subtracting, multiplying and division is beyond me. I took algebra in high school and got a D. Loved doing it but never really understood it. Same with English and diagramming sentences.

Please tell me they are an accredited school. If not, you need to back off, because you may not be able to get a job. But, if you applies for aid and were accepted, it is probably accredited.
Please check. Also, there are state grants that may be available to you, and these do not have to be paid back. There are also student loans, but they must be paid back starting 6 months after school is complete, so please don't use them unless its necessary.
You didn't mention the school. Many online schools are very good, like University of Phoenix and Kaplan. I'm sure there are others.

A friend from many years ago was here the other day and we talked. Her and her husband are both college graduates and have put their 3 girls through college. (Our kids were in school together) She was very positive and encouraging and that really helped me. She admitted I might have a few hurdles to get over, math and english were not my best (mostly worse) subjects in school but she thinks I will do fine and she certainly knows me and also knows what I am getting into.
The school did have a grant program that I did the application for and sent but somehow in 'computer' world my app got lost and I have to get it redone. I even tried to print a copy of it and only got the first 1/2 of it. I had such a hard time writting the first one I don't know if I can get the second one done....
Thanks for your response.

You stated that you already applied for fereral aid, so just ask the school if there are any otner grant programs you can apply for.
When I was in my mid-forties, I went to college. I started at a community college, then transfered to a university. I graduated in 3 1/2 years with a 3.6 QPA with highest honors. If I can do it, you can do it. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time with the books.

You are never to old to learn. As for the online college I would make some inquiries and check around more. Is this university only online? My motto is if I haven't heard about it a lot, it's worth checking into (just to make sure).
Congratulations about this opportunity.

Thanks lady. I am still positive although very disappointed with the reactions of friends around me. I have been trying to reach my very best friend but haven't been able to get in contact with her.
I have always been the type to 'jump in with both feet and forget the parachute' and that is what I did this time.....
HAAHA ... one time when I was 18 I needed a job. My boyfriends (not my husband now) father worked in this factory and had an interview set up for me and I took my boyfriend to work then went to the interview but it was dark and I came into the town backwards from how I always went and I got lost. I stoped at this restruant and asked directions then for no reason asked them if they were hiring and she asked me 'when can you start?" and I said "RIGHT NOW" .. she looked at me a little funny (I had a tight dress on and high heels and way to much make up...I really did not want that factory job because I didn't want to be 'spied on'!) and she said "well, come with me I'll show you where to hang your coat and get you clocked in!"..........I worked until it was time to pick my boyfriend up then went home changed clothes and went back in!!!!!! Needless to say I have always been 'independent'!

Being independent is a good thing in my opinion.I don't know what would have happened to me & my sons if i hadn't been. I'm sure u will do fine. I don't understand why they are being so negative either. Any time u can better yourself i say go for it.

you know what !!! when i read the first part of your discussion I thought... respect...
You believe/have faith., so use that to push off the negatives and ye you are extending out of your comfort zone.., thats not a problem., we all need to do that sometimes., i am fractionally younger than yourself, and have just started to work on my art... long time coming... and money isnt free flowing but satisfaction and sense of achievemnet is.. committ your works to the lord., it brings success...
Don't forget changes are rarely accepted especially by those close to us., and some times a little risk is the momentum needed to push you through those comfort barriers.,
blessings on your venture
respect at your stand
and a big smile., for you.,
go girlie go
best wishes

It does amaze me that I found more encouragement here then with those who know me. And those who I worked with are more positive and excited for me and sure that this is what I can do then are my friends and family that know me the best. Friends and Family have certainly been either right or left. And it is in the area that they know me that depends on where they are at. I hope that made sense. It did when I wrote it.
thanks for your encouragement and response.

hi christmas2006!
i think you should take things slowly. try to research more make sure it is accredited and legit. do they offer job fairs after you graduated to that course. it is in demand right now? in the future? how long does it take before you completed it.
if you think this is the best move you could do then do it. we need to take risks sometimes.
good luck and God bless u!

Thank you for your ??? they are all things I didn't think about until I started talking and friends started asking the same ?...
The legit thing is what had my husband the most upset besides the cost. He isn't happy about that at all. so to answer your questions the best I can here goes...
They do not (does anyone?) guarantee a job. I didn't see anything about a job fair but they offer help.
This is one of the highest demand and growing areas according to the US Department of Labor.
It was suppose to take 18 months to complete but I will have to stretch it out longer because I have to cut back on some of the credits because of funding. I had 3 choices, one was a personal loan, or an interest free loan from them with payments now, or cut the classes back to match the funds that I have. I chose that one. There is no way I can afford another payment especially not knowing how long my unemployment will last.
Back to the legit. I have no doubts about that. They are in the top 10 for online universities!!! can't get any better then that.

well, since it is legit and just like you said it is at the top 10 online universities. and they offer help on finding a job plus it is one of the highest demand. i think you should go for it.
for me it doesnt matter how long you will take it as long as you finished it and not to back out and be determined on learning.
if your husband is so upset about it. make him understand you, tell him your plans. maybe it will take long before you can start but still you will have an edge because you have the training you need for the job. if your husband still doesnt agree. it is between you and him.
one more suggestion. try to research what companies wants this kind of accreditation. look if that university are affiliated with that company.
Good Luck Christmas!

Hi Cher, NO I did no homework at all! I just jumped in with both feet first and no parachute! That is mostly what he is upset about, also I don't think he wants us to spend the money but I just don't know what else to do about a job and I am so terrified of what will happen when my unemployment ends. I am on an extension now and know that I only have a few weeks left and for where we live, short of working at McDonalds there are no jobs here. I need something with insurance or something that will pay me enough so I can purchase it on my own. We were self employed for over 20 years and what savings we had we have used up since he became disabled 8 years ago. I was working for 41/2 years but I got fired for lack of production, although they told me they would hire me back again!!!!! Right now I have insurance from where I worked but it will end in March. So I guess you could say I acted out of fear and wanting to get something going before our insurance ends. That worries me more then anything else.
I am always very cautious in what I do and how I do things. I always research things through but when they asked when I wanted to start and it did everything that I want to do I said "NOW"...my first class is 8/23!!!! I have filled out the Federal Aid papers and they have been approved. I think I am mostly ready to start.

I can do all of this at home and then the work itself can be done at home, guess it depends on who you work for. Once you get the training then it looks like the sky could be the limit. I am excited!!! also scared! I need English and math and I know school was a long time ago (1971) but those were my two worst subjects!!! Today I found out that one of my grants was rejected, to much income, can't believe that!!!! so I have to cut back on the classes and stretch the time out. Maybe for the best as that will give me more time to work on what I am working on....
thanks for your comment.

I don't think anyone is ever too old to do something that could improve their mind or their circumstances. I think that if it is making you happy to this then by all means go ahead and show all the negative people trying to put a downer on you that you have got what it takes and prove them wrong. Scientific studies have shown that an active mind can lead to a longer life and if it can possibly give you an income, well where is the harm. You go girl.

Thank you so much for the comforting thoughts. I seen my team lead from work and told her what I was going to do and she was extremely happy for me! That was encouraging. You are right about the studies. I can't tell you how much better I have actully felt since I decided this is what I really want to do. I knew I was felling kind of down from being on the unemployment and just sitting at home and not doing anything. Once I decided this is what I wanted to do, I really felt 'uplifted'.....thanks!!!!!
