One thing which concerns me every time I enter a hotspot is when I get the message on my mobile or laptop stating Wi-Fi networks detected. I am not sure if I should be accessing this at all. The reason is obvious - Privacy. Do you know of any safe method to determine if I should actually go ahead and access the Wi-Fi?

I would get an antivirus and protection software. I went to a hotspot before, and i had my security suite on, and it blocked about 100 viruses from being put on my computer by that hotspot. but i am still cautious as to what hotspots i connect to, on my phone and my computer

I tried putting a firewall earlier but I could still trace which users (device name) could access my computer. Well this only has to be about accessing websites without requiring any login info! That's all I can think of as the safest option for now.

I would always ensure that a laptop or a pc has a fire wall as well as other security on it to prevent people from seeing what you are doing as well as all the things that you have installed into your computer.I think that as long as you have got all the security on your pc or lap top that is fine.

You need to provide your own security. Otherwise, when you access one of those hotspots anybody in the neighborhood can see everything you do. If you are using a laptop, it almost certainly has built-in security capability. For mobile devices--some do, some do not. If yours does not have the option included you can get an app that will protect you. They are cheap. Some are free.
