Do you feel that religion has helped or hindered mankind?

I've heard people say that without religion we would still be living in the dark ages, that our values as a society are based on religious principles. Others state flatly that the world would be a better place if there was no religion. What are your thoughts? Why do you believe as you do?

Hi Mirita, Once again you have summed it all us nicely and that is also my opinion. Religion divides people but those who are spiritual condemns not nor judges others as long as human rights and dignity is preserved. If we follow our inner knowing and not depend on doctrines or dogma, we will find peace. Thank you for coming here and sharing this. Blessings.

Yes I agree. Sometimes people put so much emphasis on doctrines and dogma and they are wasting their time arguing on who's right or wrong. This isn't what God wanted us to do. He wanted us to understand His words, believe it and live up to it. Not DEBATE on it.

I believe without religion, we would still be in the dark ages just like what you've heard. Religion is like our foundation to our sanity. Something to hold on to in times of trouble. Something to remind us of our existence. It keeps us in check. I can only imagine what it's like without religion. Our world would be like a living trash can. We do not mind what we are doing to anyone or anything. We will be like zombies. Anyway, it instills in us faith and goodwill. Living each day with purpose and acknowledging a higher being.

Hi masmelgar, Thank you for responding to my discussion on religion and the comments here have been divided. I like your last statement - living each day with purpose and acknowedging a higher being. I feel that all religions hold the same basic truths and when practiced right can do much good. I believe that there has to be mutual respept between religions and a willingness to work together so that everyone can share in the bounty of the earth and to live in peace. Blessings.

But it caused the dark ages!! they are called the Christian dark ages you know. if it wasn't for religion there wouldn't be any dark ages

No it's not...I believe it's called the Dark Ages because historians have no clue what that era would be called or little was known at that time. Anyway, if there were religion at that time, I don't think it would have caused the dark ages. Because there would still have been order among men for all kinds of religion. There would still be faith and hope. I must have misunderstood your discussion. I thought you are asking if there were NO religion, we would still be living in the dark ages.

Okay the last time a religion had complete control of a nation/group of nations was in the Dark Ages where there was not a single major advancement during this time period as organized religion was in control and would fight or kill people who where trying to advance us out of the dark ages. So I would say yes religion has hindered mankind when it has been allowed free control of the advancement of a society.

Hi dark_joev, Thank you for sharing your thoughts but you appear to be talking only of Christianity. I think you make a good point though because when so called 'religious' leaders held power, they did not want to relinquish it. I believe that the teachings of Christ himself were good but were distorted rather quickly by those who sought power. Blessings.

Yeah in general most religions if not all have good ideas and principles its the human element that messes things up really bad for well everyone. I speak of Christianity as they had the most power over a civilization(s) for a good long time and told people that things went around the earth and things like that and controlled the advancement of the Human race.
11 Aug 10
Before the Torah or the law all men did as they felt right. It is the law of G_D that has brought us to be civilized. It is not so much religion that has hindered mankind as it is the religious leaders who have sought to enslave man and take us backwards for their own gain.

Hi freethinkingagent, Thank you for your views and no doubt it was religious leaders who enslaved man and hindered progress. I don't feel however that we can give all the credit to the Torah or say that it alone is the law of God. Granted it may have brought progress at the time but I think that the world has moved far beyond it today. It is love and compassion that we need more than anything. Blessings.

Both. It has it's positives and its negatives. If you follow the basic principle of religion that it can benefit. Help one another out, give to those who need, help the sick, comfort the sad, and love even your enemies. If these things were focused upon more than religion would be a good thing. Unfortunately people get caught up in the things that don't really matter, and are more interested in who is right and who is wrong. Who's the sinner? I'll point them out. There they are over there. Who is wrong? I'll point them out. There they are over there. We spend so much time worrying about things that don't need to be worried about that the things we should be worrying about go unnoticed. I believe the way I do because it makes the most sense to me. I can't tell you how to live your life or what to believe because I'm not God, and I don't know the truth. No one does. I consider myself a Christian, but not like the others. I think most Christians would disagree with my own personal beliefs on things, but that's fine. If they are right or I am right, it doesn't really matter. ah ok ok that's enough of this. I could write a book about this.

l can totally see your point about the basic idea and stuff. But if we somehow manage to extract that from the rest and only teach that.....wait there is XD basically a non-religious family can also bring up their children with those principles.Because it's essencial to do so. it's what l plan to do if l ever have kids.

I would give 50/50 to this Pose. If not for religion, we don’t really know what kind of bland, robot-like existence we’d have had…religion has brought diversity to human civilization, no doubt about that. Without it, we’d have none of our festivities, celebrations, rites and rituals…all such activities which make life so much more tolerable. Yes, the rigid codes and diktats have been an impediment to our progress too (especially to women of all religions) but in those dark ages, some kind of laws and guidelines were definitely required to channelize society in the right direction. Also, fear of religion was definitely required to bring in discipline in society. However, its equally true, that all religions are man-made and powerful men have misused and re-interpreted religion to suit their own purpose and etch their names in history at the expense of the vanquished. The best role religion can now have, is in our personal lives, within the four walls of our homes. Civil society is now matured enough to have laws which can deal with situations which previously required religious laws. Also education has opened our eyes to the truth behind many religious beliefs and practices… so we don’t really need religion to guide us in every aspect of our lives. It can be used maturely, for personal happiness and peace.

Hi sudiptacallingu, I feel that you may have a point. We are spiritual beings here to experience life in the physical and are evolving both physically and spiritually. Our earliest ancestors felt that there has to be someone up in the sky that caused such things as thunder and lightning etc. It has taken millions of years to evolve to the point that we are at today, and though many won't agree, we are moving forward. I don't agree that fear is or ever was necessary except to teach us that it is unnecessary. Everything teaches a lesson. Most religions that we have today probably started out with good teachings and if we would all learn to respect each other's religious beliefs we'd have made a big step forward. As we learn to have compassion for all life, to live in peace and have everyone share in the bounty that this earth produces, we continue to grow spiritually. Religion with all it's rites and ceremonies is not necessary. We are here to live this life not to prepare for some future time in a perfect place called heaven as some seem to think. There is only now and that's all there ever will be. Thank you for sharing. Blessings.

Let's face it people of myLot, Christianity has a real big impact ever since in the beginning at the dawn at the Age of Reasoning, and these what have been the reasons of major downfalls from different kind of earthly kingdoms has been fallen and embrace Christianity. These was said on the scriptures of the Bible. Although these kingdoms embrace Christianity and use for their own deeds and not for the name of God they always fail with tremendous downfall they not succeed and always prevails is the essence of Christianity. Christianity is not just about religion, its about our spiritual love to God. All religions that relates to the Love of God is all about our spiritual life. So other religions, temples, churches or houses like the Muslim, Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Hindus and many more that refer to the Love of God, major devotions are to promote harmony, peace and love with each fellowman and that surrounds. So therefore we all part of all different kind of religions of this world because our own self is a religion and the very major temple, church or house of God is living inside the center of our heart and soul. Remember it is not the Religions or God that make and done all the tribulations throughout the ages, its is always done by us, human beings, from what we have been choosing to love only this world or God. When you love God you will automatically love this wonderful world we live in. Don't be drowned for the love of this world, be drowned always by the love of God.

Hi gjabaigar, A very interesting response, thank you. You appear to feel that all roads lead to God to the extent that they show love. Is love of God and love of other creatures the same thing in your opinion? Jesus asked how one could love God, who he has not seen, if he doesn't love his fellow human beings which he has seen. Blessings.

Christianity flourished in early times, particularly in the Dark Ages, when all knowledge was controlled by the Church, and most people were illiterate, but in modern times with world consciousness rising because of unprejudiced education, religion is quickly losing out to science and free thought. If sin exists, Christianity was the biggest sin ever foisted on mankind, mainly because of it's determination to put down all other belief-systems, and life styles. Millions have been tortured, maimed, beheaded, burned, and killed in the name of God, and Catholicism in the last 2000 years. The Church is presently trying desperately to pay off victims of decades of child abuse, in an attempt to sweep the scandal under the rug, by throwing Money at it, while the Pope continues to speak out against Homosexuality, and Womens Rights. Most thoughtful, and freethinking people will agree, that Religion has had 2000 years to change the world for the better, but has failed miserably in its attempt.

Hi to both of you. I am a Catholic. But I am not proud of the ugly past to which my Church had been involved. It is truly sad and disgusting to know that the people who did it were church leaders. That alone is a proof that they have failed to live out Christ's teachings. As for me, I don't find anything wrong with my faith. It is wonderful being a Catholic/Christian if only we understand what Christ taught us.

For me, I value my religion. Through it I knew God. And through it I practice the teachings of Christ. Yes we can do without religion, we can merely say that we believe in God and we follow his teachings....fine, but as human beings, sometimes we need a guide, rites, a system inorder for us to have a structure. When we buy a new gadget or an appliance, sure our basic knowledge on how to operate them can suffice but still we would be needing the instruction manual for reference. For me my religion is my instruction manual.

Hi Theresaaiza, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I see no harm in one following a religion if it brings them comfort and they are not condemning or judgmental of others who believe differently. I think religion has to be lived if it is going to be real and I much prefer being considered spiritual to being religious. There was a time when I was very involved in religion and I'm sure most people who knew me thought of me as religious but I'm thankful that day is over. Now I follow what I like to think of as my inner knowing which some people might call the God within us. Blessings.

Hi achillies, Thank you for sharing your thoughts but I feel that there is good in all religions, certainly in all the major ones. When the teachings of a religion are distorted it creates terrorists. It has happened in the two largest, Christianity and Islam, and no doubt some others, but only because of the actions of some leaders who were out for personal gain. The fact that the golden rule is taught in all major world religions tells me that this is true. Blessings.

I agree with you rich. The original motive was good but the later custodians of the religions out of penchant for greed and power presented a distorted view to the followers and thereby vitiated the very purpose.

I don't think that religion has hindered mankind, however I feel that it would be better that there was only one religion, the religion which Jesus has taught us. But we are many on this Earth and everybody interprets Bible differently and that is why we have so many religions. But without religion we would be much more egoistic, full of bad intentions and maybe there weren't any longer be life on this Earth. Who knows?

Hi rappeter, Thank you for commenting but who are Christians to tell others that what they have been taught is wrong? This is why religion divides people and why it has sometimes hindered mankind in it's search for peace and a better standard of living for all. I feel that there are cases where it has helped but only when the true meaning of it's teachings have been comprehended and practiced. Blessings.

I agree that all religions teach a basic truth and we need mutual respect among religions. It's important to practice love and compassion and work together for world peace and to eliminate hunger. For so many, religion is a catalyst that brings people's problems to the surface. People do not hold back if they think they have God's blessings. When problems come to the surface, they are no longer hidden and can be dealt with. Deep down, we all know God. We could get along fine without religion, however life is about learning and growing. The system is geared to make that happen.

I dont believe so, i think that we would be here with or without religion. I think religion is something made up so we dont feel that we live for no purpose (no offense to believers). Some religions actually have people killing thereselves. So i am not sure what to think but pretty sure that it would be the same without religion, just without churches and stuff.

I am a firm believer that religion has helped man kind. I don't think it has hindered it. Religion and faith help us through so many bad times in our lives. throughout history nations have conquered their demons by their beliefs. Religion has helped us suffer through many trials and causes to better the world. Sometimes our religion is the only truth we have.

Hi sender, Thank you for sharing your views on this. My thoughts are that most religions contain the golden rule which should be the basics for all religion and that where it has been properly understood and practiced, it has been good. Religion however, also causes division and that is harmful. There should be love, compassion, mutual respect and a willingness to work together for peace and the basic necessities of life for everyone. People should practice their religion, not just talk about it. Blessings.

my opinion is 50-50. Religion has helped mankind and has also created hindrance. its all on the people who follow the religion. The faith and customs of religious people are not suited for this current situation which in turn has been hindrance to mankind.religion has created humanity and helping tendency among people and has helped to enrich the quality of life in many ways. religion is good until no dispute arises among people.

Hi SRBALAJEE05, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. There is no doubt but that there are good teachings in all religions - if it were lived. On the other hand religion has divided people like nothing else. Even today there are people who would think that they had done a good thing if they killed someone of another religion. Blessings.

I guess it depends on the religion. Some are very strict with very severe punishments for breaking religious laws. Those types of religions are in the dark ages already. Other religions that teach people to be nice, forgiving, loving towards one another (as much as feasible), that teach to obey the Ten commandments, etc. are good for society. Some people prefer no God and no religion and that's fine too. Religion also provides plenty of conflict as every religion claims to be the true one or the right one. If a Second Coming doesn't occur as prophesied, it is very likely that society will gradually draw away from traditional religion and will start forming new ones, probably not Christ-based. But that will take a long time because there are billions of Christians in the world. Future generations, 100-200-300 years away might not be religious anymore, not in the same formats we have today. People will eventually get tired of prophets that don't prophecy and preachers that only deliver self-esteem, feel-good stuff. Personally, I think that Bible prophecies are already being fulfilled fast and it looks like we're already facing the end of times.
