dear mylotters, i have just read that ripe tomatoes should not be stored in refrigerators because they destroy the flavor. but i am sure most housewives have been doing this practice for decades. sometimes i tend to have plenty of stock of the tomatoes. i do put ripe red tomatoes in the vegetable bin inside the refrigerator, together with other vegetables because i thought that it being inside a cooler place would slow down its fast ripening action. tell me what you usually do with tomatoes which are not yet about to be used for eating? ann

Hi ann, This is an easy decision for me. Because I only cook for one, I only buy a couple of tomatoes at a time, so they don't get refrigerated. I didn't realize that made them more flavorsome. Mike.

hi mike, there is nothing wrong or funny in what you said, but i wonder why it made me smile. i dont buy a lot myself but there always are several pieces that are left untouched after a meal hence i keep the same in a container and place the same in the ref bin. as per what i have read, i should not do that because the flavor will change. wish it would taste like apples, though. ann

Hello ann, Strangely enough, I always store my apples in the fridge. I like them cold, and I think they taste jucier. Mike.

I store them like you would fruit, I never refrigerate them, that not only ruins the flavor but also the texture. If I want to keep them I wrap in newspaper and store in cool dark place for a week or two. This is also a good way to ripen them.

hi pat, this practice that i am doing, is done by my mom and my mother's mom. being in the tropics, the atmosphere is hot almost always and everything outside the refrigerator seems to spoil very fast. maybe i should place a few fruits outside though and a few inside the ref and then taste and see the difference. have a nice day. ann

hi ann, regarding ripped tomatoes,my wife kept them in a plastic bag and then put it in the refrigerator, regularly my wife is doing like that,so there is no smell from the refrigerator, next time try like that then see what happened with tomatoes, mostly all items either it may be vegitables or dry frutits, she will put them in seperate plastic cover for each item and then kept it in the refrigerator, have a nice day

Hi, I do buy some ripe tomatoes and keep them inside the fridge. Even both me and my son loves to eat raw tomatoes. Sometimes, I do use tomatoes as part of my dishes. For me, I will put all those tomatoes inside the plastic bag and seal them properly before storing into the fridge. of course,I don't buy in large quantity, in order to keep them fresh. Normally, I will choose those tomatoes that are bit hard ,for those have very soft texture after pressing light on the skin,I won't buy those.
