I stay in front of the computer for almost 16 hours a day, and normally by the time I stand up and rest, the pain in my back is killing me. While working, I try to exercise and stretch once in a while but pain still persists after working. Do you have any other suggestions that will help relieve the pain?

Ouch, the longer you sit the worse your pain can become. Sounds like the only place you want to be after work is in bed. I would suggest you make sure you have a comfortable chair, and that your feet are level. If they don't fall flat on the floor I would add a board or boards under until you get to the correct level. I am short so I have a couple of 6X2 nailed together . That really helps . Make sure you sit in such a way that your neck does not begin to pain, sitting on the edge of your chair or too far ahead can cause pain. Once you are home I would add ice for inflammation no more than 10-15 minutes and then add heat for relaxing the muscles, again no more than 10-15 minutes. Hope you get some relief.

Is it this okay? You will first apply cold compress and after a while have a warm compress? I don't know if I'm understanding it correctly. Or do you mean, apply warm compress on a separate session/day?

Back pains can be such a nuisance. When i suffer from this casualty. I start with a back pain reliever. If the problem still persists, i will do what i can to relievee the pressure from my back. Sometimes sitting with a pillow behind my back does wonders. Resting can also do a great deal to relieve back pain. It's not a pleasant journey to the doctor's office when you are having back pain. That is my last alternative.

Exactly! I always have the option to go to the doctor because I have a health card, but for some reason I always feel lazy going to the doctor. That's one of my priorities after I give birth. Because I'm pregnant, I know dr. can't give me appropriate medication. So I'll just have to wait then.

Seeing a doctor would be a good idea for you. in the mean time, try to take the pressure off your back when possible. Good luck.

There are lots of stretch exercises you can do. Sixteen hours is a long time.Have you tried a better chair to support your back better? They have wedges also that you could use to try to help you. After sixteen hrs. of anything ,I highly doubt yoga is on your mind though could help a lot.You could also see a physical therapist ,They have great remedies for helping you out.Not to mention your work or insurance should pay for this. If you use OTC meds. try the heat pads or massage some type of rub on at night. Until you can stop being in front of the PC for 16 hrs. all you can do is try to deal with it. Try stretching and walking around as much as possible.Your posture could also be part of your problem ,This is where a physical therapist would help you. To handle such a strenuous, Type of activity.

I agree with you. My posture while sitting has really contributed a lot. I have to be more conscious with my sitting position each time I work in front of the computer. At the moment one consistent remedy I'm doing it stretching my neck and back while working in front of the computer. I would like to visit a PT probably after I give birth. I am now 6 1/2 months pregnant by the way.

I have a massager that I use on my back, its very good. You can get small ones to do easy to reach places and longer ones to reach the not so easy to reach parts of your body. You can probably find them on eBay or somewhere like that, they look like animals, I have a ladybird and a dog. They are fantastoc and I reccomend them to everyone!! Hope this helps ~AngelsMummy~

I took have a small massager as I too spend long hours sitting at my computer so this would be my advice too. What I also try to do is take a few breaks and tend to house hold chores so that I am not constantly sitting in the same position.

I had this problem before because I was playing rugby way back when I was in highschool. What my coach said to me was to elevate your legs when you are sleeping. After doing that for a couple of weeks, my back pain was gone. It worked for me, maybe it would work for you

I actually do have a pillow at my back right now. It looks like it's working because my back is feeling relaxed.

Hi ip5217, it's not healthy for you to sit for such a long time in front of the computer. If you really have to work so long on the computer. It's nice to just stand up and leave a while for doing having sips of drink or to inhale fresh air near the window or to do any other things to promote the blood circulation. If doing these regularly after I engross working for a couple of hours could avoid suffering from the disgusting pain. I like to have a short pause to stay away from sitting in front of my laptop for longer time therefore I still could keep away the awful pain on my back from me. I felt the pain again on my back few days back. Yeah, I was too indulging in playing the computer game and I was never aware that time really flied. I then realized that few hours had gone unconsciously. I scared that the pain would become severe I then left my seat without hesitation and do some exercise then to relax the muscle. It's fortunate that I never persisted to continue playing the game. If I left the game after having severe pain I think it's not that easy to shake off it that fast Take care and happy posting

Back pain is the worst. Usually if its from sitting too long you can alleviate your pain by standing up and walking around for a few. In other cases you may need to use heating pads, icy hot and massage. Pain is no fun no matter where it is.Try using the belts they have for when lifting and such. Also lift from your knees. That helps me alot! Good luck dl

Hi, ip5217. I think that you should try stretching from time to time. And you can also rub some Biofreeze on your pain. A cold compress can also help soothe and numb your back ache too.

Hi, I do have backpain once a while and normally I will apply oilment called COUNTERPAIN. Everytimes after shower, do apply at your back, and after 2-3 days, the pain is gone. It works for me,and I hope it works for you too.

The pain I'm having is more on the shoulders but I have scoliosis so I also try to take care of my back so as not to have discomforts in the future. I usually lay flat on the ground for a few minutes. If the floor is dirty, then I put stools together and sleep on it for a few minutes. After that, it always feels great. It feels that my back has been stretched. Aside from that, I usually put liniment on my shoulders before I go to sleep. It really works wonders.

Yoga, yoga. Ip5217, I would try yoga. Before teaching, I was a computer programmer/ system analyst. I sat for hours. Now I stand for hours. Nonetheless, every morning, I complete a basic yoga routine. Yoga relaxes the muscles. It is great for basic stiffness or pain in the back. You can do the stretches in the evening to unwind. You get a book from the bookstore,. You can find yoga for free on cable, and exercisetv.com Or take a class. ps. Check with your doctor. Sometimes they will tell you to take asprin or a motrin.

we have same problem well I think a massage can help us to relieve the pain and also the right position when we sit in front of computer and also I think we should stretch and move around every 30 mins for 5 mins so we will not abuse our back.
