Don't you think we could benefit from an introduction page?

There are a lot of new people that come to myLot and sometimes it takes a while for them to get started. It did for me too because I didn't know anyone when I come here. I have a lot of great friends here now. I was thinking that if myLot had an introduction page where new members could tell us all something about themselves when they arrive, it might help them get started and help us know a bit more about the people we decide to accept as friends here. We might even decide to request them as newbies based on their introductions. Obviously it's not up to me..but I think we could benefit from an introduction page...do you?

I think it would be a total waste. I've been on plenty of forums much smaller than this one, and introductions are mostly ignored. On a site this big, members would simply be overwhelmed if they bothered to try to read intros by newbies. And why bother, anyway? Out of all the people here, how many are interested in the same things you are? You're probably not going to learn enough about the people introducing themselves to decide if it's someone you're going to want to read or friend. And you certainly can't tell if they're even going to participate on the site. You get to know people by what they do, not by an intro that usually doesn't say much more than something like "Hi, I'm xxx. Glad to be here.

You may be right about that Catana but it would make me want to welcome new members and help me decide if I wanted to extend a friend request. There are so many people that come and go here that I think we might have a better chance of meeting them if they introduced themselves. Thanks for the response.

I think that would do alot of good. A place on our profiles where we could write about ourselves would definitely be nice. I think you have a good idea there. How is school and what is going on in your life? I am trying to get articles written and my life straightened out. Hope that happens one day. Ugh!

Everything is going well. I have to go school shopping today because the girls start Monday. Busy busy busy. How is it going with you?
I think that a page where newbies could come..kinda like an interest...except namd introduction...where they could say..Hi my name is and I do this and I am here because of that...I am from...then we could take more of an intitive to request them versus us being requested and turning them down because we aren't sure about this or that.
I hope you are doing well with straightening things out. I know how hard that can be. There have been many times when I have been faced with choices..non really good..so I had to choose the best of the worst..lol...sucks.

And by them taking the time to actually do that you would feel more apt to request thier friendship. Good idea.
School is coming up fast here too. The end of the month. Take care.

Hi Jen!
It is good idea indeed. Those who are newcomers, could be introduced to other older members through an introduction page, which may give brief details about the newbies who joined on a particular day.

I think you can get to know 'something' about them through their profile page. Some information is there about a member on his/her profile page. Besides, how attractive and nice his/her profile page is. (its lay-out and colour scheme etc.) also tells us a lot about a new comer.

I think you are onto something. I think that you should send an email to mylot suggesting it becasue they may do it. A lot of other sites have that option for the people who want to do it so why not mylot too.
Good luck with that my friend.

Yeah but even without getting paid I think it would be a good idea. I know when I first started here it took me awhile before I knew what to do and I sure could have used some help. So with the introductory page you could get to know people to ask for help to get going here.

I think that is already covered by our profiles page where we could actually write something about ourself.
And everything we need to know are in the FAQs!
If I were the admin, I don't see the need for an intro page anymore otherwise it would be like spoonfeeding.
But I probably just didn't get your idea right. Or I don't see it the way you imagine. I am for anything that could help anyone and everyone.
I do hope myLot admin would consider this proposal if it benefits a lot pf people especially the newbies. :)

It is covered on our profile page but how many times have you recieved a request from someone new and turned it down because you weren't sure if they would be active or if you had anything in common to discuss. I think that you can tell alot from an introduction. If it is a one liner...maybe you wouldn't consider their friendship ot maybe it was a line that caught you and you would. It would introduce new members to us. I don't normally just roam around people's profiles but I do check them before befriending them. It would also give us an oppertunity to welcome new members and give them tips before they get started. it might be a flop of an idea..lol..but who knows? Thanks for your input on this.

Oh yeah, I get it. Somewhat like the one in Yahoo Messenger. When you add a contact, you get prompted to write a brief intro about yourself, a greetings perhaps. Yes, that might just be a good idea. That way, we don't have to clutter our friend's list with inactive members.

Good morning Jenn, that would be nice. I think it people would put more about themselves on their home page it would help to. some people don't even put where they are from, their age & things like that.

I agree with a lot of others here who think an introduction page would be a really good idea! It would give new people not only a chance to introduce themselves but the opportunity to be introduced to the rules and regulations here. I see benefit from such an idea for sure! Let’s hope Alice sees it and puts forward for consideration...

Yeah, I think that is a great idea. Have you suggested it to admin at all? I am not sure if they would implement it but I do know that a lot of forum based sites do have this feature and it seems to work well as a place that new members can settle in and start to feel welcome.
I only knew of one person here when I started and they were not very active so I figured that I would try to find more Aussies. I started a discussion to try and find more and that was how I made my first contacts here.

Yes that would be a thought but figuratively speaking it would be a list that no one would ever really read in total as it would be so long I wonder if the bandwidth could handle such a list.
Some sort of introduction perhaps in the profile it self would be a good place as many new myLotters have a tendency to think that adding an introduction is also an earning post.
The idea is a great one.

yes, as a new person in the last month I have felt a little overwhelmed. I haven't known what to do here. You hear people recommend the site and say it's a good way to this and that, but I think the suggestion of introductions and perhaps a tutorial might be beneficial. So, let me begin, My name is Erin.Nice to meet you! Tell me about yourself! Thank you for posting this discussion!

LOL...hello Erin...nice to meet you. My name is Jenny but you can call me Jen or whatever comes to mind..I'm pretty easy going in that manner..lol...I am a mom, a fulltime employee, a fulltime student, a girlfriend, and a busybody. I like to think of myself as a writer and a painter but that would depend on who you talked to..isn't that the way it is with art? I guess that's pretty much it..so what about you?

I am sure that is a good idea for everyone here . You are so clever that you find out this method . Introduction page can make us find new people's data very easily . Therefore we can get more friends here . I can not agree with you more ,friend .

I believe that any tool that will help us to familiarize ourselves with those we may come in contact with is worth considering. As a relatively new member myself, I think it would have made my introduction to mylot a lot easier and perhaps more enjoyable since other members may have welcomed me based upon my introduction. It also helps us to put a personality together with the photo and profile.

Hi ptpower..you can put photos and stuff on your profile but you have the right idea about the introduction. I think that by being welcomed and acknowledged that newer members might stay around longer plus they might make friends here a little quicker. Some of us that have been here for a while are selective about who we choose as friends because they sometimes are inactive or they fill your inbox up with a bunch of spam. Thanks for the response.

probably couldn't hurt, but going in and selecting interests and then going to those interests and responding to a few recent discussions would also work really well... if I see the "cats" interest up in the recent discussions on top of the page, I almost always will go check and see what was started - can't say I do the same for "mylot.com" or some of the others...

I also think it would help. It would make newcomers feel more comfortable. If they feel welcome they are more likely to be active on the site especially if they make good friends. It would be a win win situation.

I think so too. There are a lot of members that throw in the towel because they aren't getting many responses to their discussions. That's a normal start but they don't realize it yet. I remember being very discouraged when I first started but I loved the idea of the forum so much that I continued. Thanks for responding.

that sounds wonderful. then we could figure out if they are here for true activity or just to spam. here recently ive had at least 3 newbies ask friendship, then immediately spam me without even making 1 discussion. its to where now im afraid to accept any friends without i see if they have discussions. thats sad to.

That is why I am selective too. I usually won't accept them unless they have responded to one of my discussions or a friend's. If I check their profile and there are a bunch of banners and no discussions...I'm out. I think it would be nice to welcome them and give them some tips...it could save us a lot of trouble too...hehe

Hey Jen! Sounds like a great idea to me! I remember how lost
I felt when I got here! I had no idea what I was doing since
this is the first and only site of this type that I had ever
been on. I really think that myLot should do something like
that for the newbies and definitely make the TOS alot easier
for them to understand. Maybe "Alice" will see this discussion
and pass the word along!

That's a great idea JenInTN. Even though I become friends with everyone that request it. It would be great to know a little about these newbies before hand.

Hi lelin! I don't accept everyone because once I did and I wsa bombarded with spam from them. I also browsed through my friends list before and there were alot of people that had been inactive for months and had very low activity numbers. I have become a bit choosey I guess. I would be quicker to accept or request if I knew a little about them and thought they were serious about giving myLot a go. Thanks for the response!
