Hi sjaswon,
Good question! Service could be understood in many ways by many people. But in this case I mean a service that is not selfish. A good work done with good motive. Helping others who are in need without expecting any form of reward - reward could be; respect, thank you, fame, reputation, status, etc. Helping others with a clear conscience and not ill-motivated! Hope it's clear. Thanks

Hi bekosfc, I believe that we are all one and when we help another we are also helping ourselves. Of course we don't let others take advantage of us because that really isn't helping them or us. Yes I believe that life is about helping others but giving them a hand up not a hand out. Of course, sometimes it's necessary to give that hand out before we can give a hand up but that has to be the goal. Some people have to be taught that it's only by contributing to society that we can truly enjoy life. blessings.

A life has no meaning if you don't give a part of yourself to others. Living in your own shell and not seeing the world. It's very simple for example, as a mother, I should be selfless and think of my childrens' happiness and needs before my needs and not think too much of myself like when I was single. As a person we should try to help and reach out to others because it also fill an empty space in our hearts that we made something for other people. Through charity or socially extending help to others, it will bring joy and happiness to our well being.

I think service for others gives meaning in life as that is when people hold you in high standards. Almost everyone does service for himself but there are very few who do it for others and they have been known as great men. I do not think there is any need to name the great men who done service for others.

Thanks Nikhil! There is a saying in the Old Book that we find our true self when we are willing to lose it for the sake of others! It is indeed true and will remain so long after you and I are gone from this planet earth that when we do something good to others we feel good. I can experience this feel good factor stuff when I do the least service to others - it could be giving a glass of chill water to a thirsty friend in hot Delhi summer! People know that when we do good we feel better. Many good feelings sums up to good meanings I believe. But doing good to others don't come cheap. It is often costly and even self-sacrificing at times. But we find life to be meaningful when we do something good for others. To get a consistent meaning in life we need to practice good service to others consistently!
But there is another word which motivates a person to consistently act good! And that word they called PURPOSE. It is when we find or discover our purpose in life that we will be willing to do good to others at whatever cost it may be!
Thanks for writing!

Service for others gives more meaning to life. We are brought to life by being with others, by living with others not by ourselves. Feeling satisfaction of serving others, of looking them go through the process of life gives us a feeling of a day's completion towards life. When we are serving others, we are also serving ourselves one way or the other. For the ones we had and have helped will also learn to serve others. By spreading service to humanity, we give meaning to everyone's lives.
