In your opinion who are the most important authors from your country? And why do you consider them important?
The first Danish author I thought about was Hans Christian Andersen. His fairytales are very famous and both children and adults enjoy them. His goal was to write stories that appealed to children as well as adults. Children "just" enjoy the stories while the adults are able to read between the lines and understand the morale of the story. I grew up in the city when Hans Christian Andersen was born and I have visited his museums a couple of times, I found it interesting to learn more about his life and his books.
Karen Blixen is another famous author, and she wrote books like Seven gothic tales and Out of Africa. Peter Hoegh is a comtemporary Danish author and he has written Smilla's sense of snow, Borderlines, The woman and the ape etc.

Thanks for the link, it was interesting to read about Vikram Seth. I have heard a little bit about him before, did you know that one of his books ("A suitable boy") has been tranlated to Danish? I borrowed the book from a friend once, but I didn't get the chance to read the entire book. I plan on buying it or finding it at the library so that I can read the rest of it, because I liked the book.

No, I don't know them, but I tried to find some information about them. Arunddhati is mentioned in the Danish version of Wikipedia but not Jhumpa Lahiri, so I found some information in English instead. I am interested in literature from other countries and I would like to read some of their books.

Previous post have mentioned our country's national hero, Jose Rizal.
but on this present day, I have always been appreciative of the books published by Jessica Zafra.
http://www.jessicarulestheuniverse.com/ - this is her world. If you like, you can check her out.
Her books might be incomparable to the works of Rizal but her thoughts are something else. Like she could point you to the right direction in which we people are being blinded or naive about.
She has this ala comic book called the 500 People You Meet in H3ll. When I first saw this in bookstore, I was so very curious and since it's very affordable (actually, all her books are affordable). I decided to buy it. I was very impressed because it's like a countdown of the people you encounter in life. Example: The person who bullied you. The teacher who has favorites in your class and picks on you a lot.
Many interesting things about her. And I could read her books again and again. She happens to have a "twisted" sense of humor. And I have a lot of respect for this author. :D

Jessica Zafra sounds interesting. I just had a quick look at the link, but I will return later and read more of it. I like people who have a twisted sense of humour. You description of her books also made me curious, and I will keep that name in mind

Hi Porcospino!.
I think the most importance author in my country is Pramudya Ananta Toer with his famous Tetralogi. Its describe Indonesian culture especially Java in his time. He has been put in jail because thats book. His book has been used as text book for sociology study even his book is a novel. This novel still a best seller after many 50 years.

i think the most important author in my country (Philippines) would be our national hero Jose Rizal.
He wrote "Noli Me Tangere" (The Social Cancer) and "El Filibusterismo" (The Reign of Greed) which both depict the dire situation that my country was in during the Spanish colonization.
He was arrested and executed by firing squad because of those books. I mean, the Spanish (though not all of them, just those who want to stay in power) have been after him for some time but they didn't have any proof to facilitate his arrest. when his books were published, they used it and accused him of leading a revolution, had him arrested, and eventually killed.

I am from India. One of the most prolific authors here is the late R.K.Narayan. His novels were simple yet humorous, lending a portal to the world to access India through his books. He is the recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan award. He has written a number of novels like - Swami and Friends, The Bachelor of Arts, The Dark Room, The English Teacher, Mr.Sampath, The Financial Expert, Waiting for the Mahatma, The Guide (which was remade as a feature film starring Dev Anand), The Man-Eater of Malgudi, The Vendor of Sweets, The Painter of Signs, A Tiger for Malgudi, Talkative Man, The World of Nagaraj, Grandmother's Tale; and collections of short stories like - Malgudi Days (which was remade as a television series), An Astrologer's Day and Other Stories, Lawley Road and Other Stories, A Horse and Two Goats, Under the Banyan Tree and Other Stories, and The Grandmother's Tale and Selected Stories. I am proud to say that i own almost all of the books mentioned above. R.K.Narayan has been regarded as one of India's greatest writers in the 20th century. He passed away on May 13, 2001 at the age of 94.

Thank you for your description of R.K Narayan. He has written a lot of books, it could be interesting to read some of them. Which one is your favourite book, and or which ones would you recommend if I want to read some of his books? I am not sure if they are available in my country, but maybe it is possible to find them in one of the big libraries.

Personally besides Jose Rizal I would say F. Sionil Jose, his Rosales Saga transcend generation. I would say if you want to know more about the Filipino people our struggle, way of life and history in a more personal level then read his works.
