When you visit garden city - Singapore, it is also boasted as a food paradise. One of the most popular delicacy would have to be the spring roll which is also called "popiah" a Fujian dialect for this popular Chinese delicacy. For western country members, a closer description would have to be Vegetarian Crepe. The fresh spring roll's main part of the delicacy will have to be the "skin" which is a soft, thin paper-like crepe or pancake made from wheat flour which is eaten in accompaniment with a Chinese black soya sweet sauce, shrimp paste sauce. The filling is mainly stir-fried finely grated turnips and carrots with a combination of other ingredients such as bean sprouts, lettuce leaves, along with grated fried tofu, slices of Chinese sausage, minced peanuts, fried shallots, and shredded omelet. Other common variations of fresh spring roll or popiah include include fresh boiled shrimps or crab meat. So, do give a try of this special traditional delicacy when you visit Singapore and I am sure you will not be disappointed. Hungry now?

Hey there skysuccess! Popiah is one of my favorite delicacies of all-time, and I hail from Malaysia. You can actually find popiah in most towns in Malaysia too, since it is a popular Chinese delicacy like you mentioned. I normally eat popiah as an entree to a main meal or just as a snack, since the serving is normally too small to make a main meal. And this dish is one perfect for sharing with others (family or friends) since they actually cut the popiah into three or four pieces per roll. Hmm....thinking about popiahs just make me miss Malaysia and Singapore food even more! Gotta eat as much as I can when I go back (I'm now based in Australia)......

Spring Roll Party - Get down and your hands licking good - a fresh spring roll galore party
gerald_lian, Of late, we have popiah as the main meal here. Families will prepare the fillings, sauces and plenty of the popiah or spring roll skin and actually get down to making the roll to our liking. You may like to have this popiah party while you are in Australia as I am sure your local friends there will find this to their liking and interesting. Have a nice day.

Hi, When I saw your topic talking about popiah, my stomach feel hungry and really miss Singapore Popiah. I was in Singapore for the past 9 years and Popiah is one of my favourite dish. Every hawker centre in Singapore will sell this Popiah. I love to eat those with bit chilly taste inside and It jusr taste delicious if you were to eat them hot. I can't find any best popiah at my town now and sometimes, when I am craving for popiah, I will make it myself, but I just can't find the sweet sauce in the supermarket and without that sweet sauce, the popiah won't taste delicious.

That sounds delicious. I do love spring rolls and Crepe. My mom and use to do a lot with Crepes like adding shrimp, lettuce, sprouts and some veggies. It's light, delicious and fun to eat spring rolls We even added strawberries, strawberry glaze and whip cream. The other way would be to have sausage, scrambled egg and top with cheese and salsa. I love with my sister did spinach, mushrooms and tofu. There are just so many ways to enjoy a spring rolls or crepes. You just made me want to go to the store and by some spring rolls and fillings. ~HAPPY EATING~ :)

megabiz, I really enjoy Strawberry Crepe with whipped cream - which is also one of my favorite. Unlike the crepes (skin) the Chinese spring roll skin is fine and thin. It is almost translucent and its simply there to hold all the delicious and juicy fillings together we put it into our mouths. Bon Appetit, as well, my friend.

Wowah! Well what can i say, my mouth is already watering with the exquisitive spring rolls. The ingredients only add to the pleasure of eating. The skin of the spring roll indeed matters a lot. Here in India the most famous spring rolls are the veg-spring rolls. I have tried them many a times, but seems the ones you are talking about are indeed more delicious. Yeah would love it if u send it to me via mail:). Keep on enjoying it until we join you in singapore!.

I am also hungry! I would love to try out these spring rolls, but I wonder if the shrimp paste can be removed or optional since I am allergic to shrimp. We also have this kind of fresh spring roll here in the Philippines where the filling is from grated young coconut palm (?). I don't know how to translate it, but here we call it "ubod" which also has shrimps in it, so I would have to make my own version at home minus the shrimp. This discussion has really made me hungry. Time to raid the fridge!

Nonya Cake - Nonya Kueh Dadar a dessert delicacy
anne25penn, If you'd like you can substitute the prawn paste with oyster or abalone sauce. As for the shrimps, you can use grated crispy bacon or crab meat. I think it is really different from your local "Ubod" which is Nonya Kueh Dadar (sweet) greenish crepe with sweet grated coconut. The Chinese fresh spring roll is salty and is between a snack and entree, Kueh Dadar is more towards tea snack or dessert. Hope you will realize the difference and most of all could get the delicacy right.

Yes, you are making me hungry now... Coincidentally, my place are having the 'night market' this evening (Wednesday evening). There will be the usual long queue of people ordering for this tasty spring roll. It came in two variant. One is the fried version and another one is the steam crepe 'popiah' version. It is absolutely delicious.
