Maybe it's an add-on problems, many of them may slow it down its startup. But, I ask you, does it browse normaly or slow too??
Perhaps your system is too small, what computer do you have? ram? hd? proccesor?
I prefer Opera as my main browser and I see it to be much faster than anything else.
Chrome is also very fast, but so buggy and has problems with many sites to seriously use it.

20 Seconds or more just to launch means that your system has a spy-ware or a virus. You must check your system for viruses. Next, you can un-install then install Firefox again. Also, test other browsers to see whether you will have the same problem. The last solution will be installing a new operating system. This solution will solve the problem for sure altough it is painful.

Well, I am not a very techy mama but I feel that firefox is faster and safer than internet explorer as a browser.
Maybe, you can start with disk clean up for maybe you're memory is kind of full. Then if memory space is still too little, you can probably try to delete some programs you are no longer using. Clearing your cookies sometimes help too as it is hard to enter some sites without clearing them (ex. facebook).
Hopefully not, but you can also check your system for viruses.
If nothing works, you should probably upgrade your system or ask a technician to check your CPU. I haven't heard anybody complained about firefox yet.
