Got a Librart Card Yesterday. . . Do You Use Your Library?

I haven't had a library card in a while, I have had bad experiences with libraries, I forget to take books back and run up lots of late fees or the library doesn't have what I want to read. But I am going to be tutoring someone at the library for a few weeks so I figure I will be able to remember to take the books back. How many of you use the library to get books or movies. Do think the economy has caused people to rethink the role of a library in their lives? Think they are more popular now?

Hi Aurone, When I moved to a new state in 2000, I registered to vote, got my car registered, got a driver license, and got a library card. These were some of my top must haves in a new place of residence. I read and read, I can't afford all the books I like to read, so I basic live at the local library (about 10 minutes away). The online service is great, I just go online check to see if the county libraries have what. If the neighborhood library doesn't have what I want, they order it from one of the other county libraries and it is sent over to them. when it arrives, they call and leave a message on the phone and I go pick it or them up. I like this service because I don't have to wait in line to order. Our library is always full of avid readers, children and adults alike. If we are ever able to live on another planet, I pray they have libraries. I can't stand not having something to read and the source to find what I want is the library. My library card never gets dusty. In fact, it is pretty worn out. I do have some late fee, but not very high, so I just leave them until I can remember to carry in some cash.

I have been using an outline trading site for the past couple of years to keep down my cost. I can just never remember to go, the library is always far from my house and out of the way. Also when I was a kid our library didn't carry anything I wanted to read so I guess that just carried over into my adulthood even though now I live in a big city with an extensive library system. Hopefully I will be able to get to the library more often now.

Hi Aurone, I find that it is a free way to increase my knowledge without pay for a college course. I love the atmosphere.

I have a library card and my son loves to go there to get books. I haven't been there in a little while because I know that I had some fees that I forgot to pay and I am not sure how much that is. When I get some of my online payments, I will have to go and get some more books because I really do love to read. I read some fiction but a lot of books about do-it-yourself projects or self-improvement. Those are my favorite genres.

It looks like we all have problems with library fees. I am glad you son likes to go to the library. Not many young people like to read these days.

I have always had a library card and used the library. It is a great place to get all kinds of reading material, CD's and even to use their computer when ours was down. I love being able to go onto my account and put things on hold myself, that is if I don't have a fine..I make sure to get anything I take out back to them before the due date. I think it's great that you are tutoring, what will you be tutoring in?

Microbiology. I teach biology for a local community college so in the summer or for a little extra cash during the semester I try to do a little bit of tutoring. Plus it is great for me to be able to have some 1 on 1 time with some students. I don't always get to do that with large classes.

Now, its not so bad. If you think you will need tutoring for it I can recommend a sight that lets you find a local tutor. Its the one I work for.

I used to go to the library a lot in my teens and such. However, I have to admit that I don't go very often anymore. I might go to my university library for some meeting or to get some books for research and such, but that's pretty much it. It's really not very often anymore.

Do you still read or does school keep you too busy? I didn't read as much when I was in college cause I had some much require reading to do.

I enjoy visiting my local library. My library card is used often. There are sso many reading choices in the library. There is something for everyone. I think more people are visiting their local libraries because books can be so expensive to buy. Free reading is a bonus in the state of our economy. Visiting the library is also a great way to spend the day.

I agree. Sometimes it is just nice to get out of the house and if you can't afford the price of a coffee or a movie ticket, then you can go to the library for a change of scenery and maybe meet new people.

Hey, I used to get 12 books out every two weeks when I was a teenager (well, 11-14). How did I read them all? I have no idea, I was such a bookworm/nerd. Now I am nearly 30 and I still join the library in every new place I go if I am going to be there for more than a a few months. I find the new online services really useful as libraries become more technologically advanced (no more searching for a book using a code and a magnifier machine). I also just wanted to let you know that in many cities in North America, libraries offer free access to places within the city such as art galleries and zoos. I have made use of this in various places and think it's really useful!

Oh wow, I didn't know that. I will have to check and see if my library has something like that, thanks for telling me about it. It would be fun to go to the zoo.

When I was in elementary school in the 1980s, my mother and I would go to two local libraries in each small town and have library cards for both. My mother and I had always taken books that were due, or we would recheck them with the card for another due date. Now that I'm older, I hardly ever go to a library, but I would go to the bookstore to browse for newer books. I rather buy books that are based on my knowledge and keep them forever, rather than checking out ones in the library.

Library cards (note the 's') are a must for me! Admittedly, in the beginning, I only used the library's computer facilities for the internet, youtube etc. But even when I got my own laptop (finally) I still often go to my local library to read the books that I sadly don't have the cash to buy. as well as the DVDs. I don't know if it's the same or somewhat different, but here, we get charged for borrowing DVDs. The local library however, offered free rentals for members under 16. Alas, I'm past that age so no free rentals for me.

I use my library card frequently, since I almost never buy books. My library has a marvelous selection of books. If books I want to read are not available, I reserve them to read at a later time. I hope that the economy has caused people to rethink the role of libraries in their lives. Libraries are places where people can find up-to-date information that is free, and that is why I hope people are using libraries more, in these challenging economic times.

I use the library on occasion. I prefer to buy books, but of course I can't always afford to. The library is a really great resource for ultra avid readers like me. I think the libraries around the country have seen more use since the recession. Though, the library always seemed like a pretty crowded place to me.

I prefer to buy them myself too, but this summer I am not getting paid so money is kind of tight so getting a few books at the library will help me out since I read a lot too. I think you are right many people are feeling the crunch of the recession and the libraries is becoming a better option for many people.

I go to my library once a week and volunteer and while I'm there, I request stuff and then I use it to read and watch stuff for free for my reviews that I write.

I use the library a lot. If I am not able to read the books in time, we have the facility of phoning and asking them to rebook the library books for another three weeks. This can also be done through the internet. This helps a lot in avoiding late fees and gives me more time in which to read my books.

That is helpful in avoiding fees. Maybe my library does that too, I will have to check.

You must not be much of a book reader. Most book lovers love the library.

That's right, they not always have got the books you are looking for, but even so they have plenty of books which I still not have read. So I also use the public library which is very close to my house. It is much cheaper than buying all the books. Also, after reading them you can (have to) return them and you don't fill in your home with books. If you are an active reader, books can occupie to much space at home which (in my case) I don't have. I also like libraries because of the possibility to study there. Nowadays, living the financial crisis where many people hasn't got a work or work hours are reduced to part time jobs, it's a good time now to study that one you never had time for because of the work. Even doing so, I also buy sometimes a book, but less than I would do if I wouldn't have got a library in my neighbourhood.

I'm a college student now and use the library a lot. At school,I can freely use the library, only when I don't return books in time,I will be asked to pay a very small amount of money as late fee. However,in China, there are seldom libraries out of schools.so I think library is not popular here.I don't know if you have some libraries to use out of schools. If the answer is "yes",I admit I can't help envying you.
