Are Anime Music Videos Overrated?

It seems that with the advent of YouTube, anyone can make an anime music video. Do you think they're overrated now that they've oversaturated the internet? Originally, AMVs were supposed to be about promoting anime and getting people interested in it and being like, "What's this show?" now it's all about, "Oh, look at me, I can make cool video effects with my pirated copy of Sony Vegas." It's not even about promoting the anime anymore, it's about attention. I make AMVs but I haven't made one in a long time. What do you think? Do you think they're overrated, no matter hat anime the AMV is made for?
Don't link any AMVs in this discussion please. That's not what this is for.

Some people are really good at doing AMVs and I watch them because I was expecting some kind of of story flow even it's just an AMV. What annoys me are the AMV that poorly made and executed just for the sake of posting.

The amount of AMVs on Youtube is extremely annoying. There are some AMVs that I enjoy and that I feel are well done, but I find it very tedious when I'm trying to find a clip or an episode of an anime and the only thing I can find are AMVs. I think they've become a bit too popular and overrated and about 80% of the recent ones are really pretty crappy anyway. I still enjoy some good ones once in a while, but really.

Hey there, review. I'd actually say that AMVs are underrated. Why? Because they are so many and so poorly designed. They would be overrated if they weren't good but everyone would think they are amazing. But as the situation stands, there is no request for them but they are still made for competition and for people to promote the skills they have/think they have.
It's just like the ones that go to shows like America's got talent only to make fools of themselves.
Good AMV's are still out there but they are harder to find because of all the bad/mediocre material. It's the same problem with books today and the so called best sellers. Thing is to know how to separate the good from the bad. I think this makes the good be even better and the discovery of a good AMV worth even more than before

I'm not sure. I mean, before youtube even there was animemusicvideo.org or amv.org--can't remember which one--that was pretty popular. Youtube just makes it easier to view them because they don't have to be downloaded.
There are more crappy ones than good ones these days though, yeah. But I guess it works as a good learning experience, if you're actually going to apply movie making skills to anything. -shrugs-

I do see what you mean and I have to agree that AMVs have become a bit overrated. I've seen a lot of videos where people just slap a bunch of clips together with the music. They don't even take the time or effort to try and find quality clips either which is the sad thing. I remember years ago when AMVs were a thing of art. People actually took the time to make their videos look nice. You can actually tell how much a person loved a particular show because they spent so much time making the video look cool. And back in those days it was hard to make AMVs because everything had to be done by hand, not like it is today with all those various programs available. I think people have just gotten lazy and they want to jump onto the bandwagon so they go out and make crap videos. I used to be an avid fan of these AMVs but I honestly have not seen a decent looking one in a while. Most of the time I see the same looking thing over and over.

They sure are overrated, and not only that, most of them not worth the watching, using full scenes of the anime, or having bad quality clips/ audio/ effects...
Have not watched any AMV in a while actually though I remember watching some really good AMVs back then, but those are just few next to endless of terrible amvs.

Yeah I think they are overrated even though I use to make a lot of A.M.V but I still see them but like once a month.
